1  WoW Shaman Birthday Cake! in Dessert by metalpunkmonster on: July 12, 2009 12:49:30 PM
i wanted to make my little brother a special birthday cake for his 20th birthday.  he loves world of warcraft, and his main character is a tauren shaman, so i wanted to make him a shaman themed cake.

i have to admit that nothing was from scratch.  i used boxed chocolate cake mix, canned vanilla frosting, and bagged raspberry filling from a local baking supply shop.  i'm so glad i did because it came out so much better than if i made it all myself.  i'm good at baking, but i just can't get my cakes right if i don't use mix.  besides, the decorating is my favorite part!

it has 4 layers of cake; 2 round cakes cut in half horizontally.  i filled it with a generous amount of raspberry filling, and frosted the outside with vanilla frosting.  then i used toothpicks to draw my design in the frosting.  the colored frosting is just the canned stuff tinted with powdered food coloring.  i find that it works better than the liquid and gel because it doesn't add any moisture to the frosting.  all the stirring gives the frosting a nice consistency for piping.  i just use ziplock bags as piping bags.  no clean up!  i wanted to add rice krispy treat totems, but i thought that would be a bit much.

this was seriously the best cake i've ever made.  better than our amazing local bakery.  again, i give credit to betty crocker and tapp's cake emporium for that. Tongue

my brother absolutely loved it!

2  World of Warcraft My Little Pony: Shadow Bolt in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by metalpunkmonster on: April 12, 2009 05:14:26 PM
i love world of warcraft.  and i love crafting.  and when i was a little girl, i loved my little pony.  i guess it's only natural that i decided to customize a my little pony with a warcraft theme.

her name is shadow bolt!  she's based off of my main character's main spell which is... shadow bolt.  imagine that.  lol.

she started off as firefly, a pink pony with blue hair.  when i was a kid it was my favorite pony.  unfortunately mine was sold long ago at a garage sale, so i bought a bag of random ponies on ebay and firefly was one of them!  i ripped out all the hair and the tail and scrubbed off the paint.  then i dyed her purple.  there are a few spots on the back from the dye, but shhh!  you can't see them!  i added some paint to the wings and painted the shadow bolt symbol on her butt.  i painted the eyes too.  i'm so happy with how they turned out!  i added some glitter to the wings and shadow bolt symbol.  unfortunately it's peeling a little, but i scraped that part off.  i think it was just poor quality glitter glue (of course the only brand that i saw that had purple).  and i glued purple rhinestones to her face.  i think they're pretty.  i also did a full rehair with the same kind of hair that the original my little ponies have.  the rehair wasn't as annoying as i thought.  that part took an hour and a half at the most, and that time included cleaning up the blood from when i stabbed myself with the reroot tool.

more pics to show off detail:

customizing my little ponies is insanely easy and addictive.  i'm working on another warcraft themed pony right now.  he's gonna take a while because i'm making him a chain mail saddle.  yeah.

here's the sites i used for the tutorials:
basic instructions:http://www.cloverflowers.com/custom/Tutorials.html
hair reroot:http://www.dollyhair.com/reroottutorial.htm

i used the second site for the mane because the first one's tutorial was more complicated and time consuming.  other than that i used the first site for everything.

3  cthulu called and i crocheted in Amigurumi: Completed Projects by metalpunkmonster on: April 12, 2009 04:39:06 PM
i started doing a bit of research on cthulu.  he seems to be a pretty popular guy to crochet.  now i have developed quite a fondness of him!  playing the new metallica guitar hero fueled my new found adoration (they have a stage in the game where you play a song ABOUT chtulu [the thing that should not be] FOR cthulu).  so i picked up creepy cute crochet.  awesome book, by the way.  and here's the fruit of my labor.  i finished him in one night because i got so into it.  WOOT LATE NIGHT CRAFTING!!!

he's made of red heart super saver acrylic yarn with sculpey polymer clay eyes.  fabri-tac glue is amazing for gluing eyes onto amigurumi.

here's pics:

4  World of Warcraft Blood Elf Warlock purse! in Crochet: Completed Projects by metalpunkmonster on: November 23, 2008 07:12:24 AM
my boyfriend and i play WoW and my main character is a blood elf warlock.  what better way to show off my pride than a purse?

this project killed my hands and wrists, but it was a labor of love.  i can't believe how good it turned out, especially since i made up the pattern as i went along.  if anyone is interested, i'll post the pattern.  i wrote it down somewhere.

the strap stretched a LOT, so i had to make some repairs/alterations a few times.  it's the perfect fit now.  i used sugar n' cream 100% cotton yarn.  part of the strap is showing some wear and tear now, but i think i can fix it.  i used cotton because i thought it would be sturdier.  oh well.  Undecided

on with the pics!

detail of the front.  i used sugar n' cream cotton yarn to back stitch the lettering.

the purse showing a little strap.  the strap is long enough to be worn across the body for extra safety.  who wouldn't want to steal a sweet purse like this?  Roll Eyes

the top and inside.  this was my first time ever installing a zipper and it came out great.  i crocheted the top to fit the zipper perfectly.  the inside is just a fat quarter in a cool pattern that looked kinda like blood.  it's not as bright as the pic shows.

i also made a few alterations from the pattern:

back stitched a belt on
the back of his head and the sc on the sides are white to simulate hair

6  skullholder dish rag in Projects from The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller by metalpunkmonster on: April 16, 2008 10:18:09 PM
i was watching my boyfriend clean his stove top with a handful of paper napkins and i thought "he needs a cool rag to do this with."  i thought that the skullholder would be perfect for him because he's into heavy metal music.

so i used the pattern for the skullholder, except i only made one piece instead of two because it doesn't need to be thick like a potholder does.

and here it is!

i think i might do a few more in different colors.

i'm also proud because this is my first tapestry crochet project and it came out great!

7  swim, swim, HUNGRY! dopefish cross stitch in Needlework: Completed Projects by metalpunkmonster on: April 15, 2008 10:32:04 PM
since i was a kid, i've been obsessed with the PC game "commander keen."  now that i'm also obsessed with crafting, it's only fitting that i combine obsessions into one SUPER obsession! *diabolical laugh*  ahem... anyway...

thus the dopefish cross stitch was born!

(sorry the pic's a little funky.  that always happens to me with cross stitch.)

8  knit police tape (IMG heavy!) in Knitting: Completed Projects by metalpunkmonster on: April 15, 2008 10:24:08 PM
i made this scarf for my best friend who is a law enforcement major.  she absolutely loved it.  i used caron one pound yarn and got the pattern from craft 04: costumes.  this is my first project done in stockinette.  before this i could only do garter stitch.  i was very pleased with the results.  i used duplicate stitch on the lettering because i couldn't for the life of me figure out how to do intarsia without having holes everywhere.  i think i got it now though.

9  nintendo ds lite sock... with pattern! in Crochet: Completed Projects by metalpunkmonster on: April 15, 2008 10:08:51 PM
these were my very first completed crochet projects.  it's also the first pattern i created myself.  yay me!

close up of the pink one

close up of the green one

and here's the pattern!  they fit the ds lite.  i'm not sure if they would work for a regular ds.  also, i crocheted it pretty tightly so if you're a loose crocheter, you may have to use a smaller hook.

i used a US G/6 hook and worsted weight yarn.  i think i used caron simply soft brights.

chain 29

being careful not to twist the chain, join the ends with a single crochet.  this may take several tries because it's sometimes hard to tell if it's twisted until you finished your next row.

single crochet in a spiral until you have 36 rounds.  do not join each round; just keep crocheting.  i highly recommend using a stitch holder to mark the beginning or end of each round to make counting easier.  for my stripe pattern, i crocheted 3 rounds of each color.

fasten off leaving a long tail (about 12 inches?).  flip the tube inside out and use the tail to sew up the bottom.  weave in ends, then flip the sock right side out.

for the strap, i used the macram technique.  if you don't know how to macram, it's pretty easy and i'm sure you can find a good tut online.  i did about 110 knots for the strap, then tied it on to the open side.

the sock should be a little snug at first, but it will stretch to fit the ds perfectly.

10  very snuggly baby blanket in Crochet: Completed Projects by metalpunkmonster on: April 15, 2008 09:49:58 PM
i made this a while ago, and i finally got around to posting it.  it's just a piece of fleece with a ruffled crochet edging.  i got the pattern out of the october 2006 issue of crochet today! magazine, and i used bernat baby boucle yarn.  the blanket is very snuggly and light weight.  i made it just for fun.  i wish one of my friends would have a baby so i can make more cute things!  Cheesy
