2  FIBER ARTS / Weaving: Completed Projects / 2 Handspun Woven Shawls- my first 2 weaving projects! (lots of photos!) on: October 11, 2009 04:01:19 PM
I'm super excited to share my first projects!! I just LOVE my new loom! I think weaving shows off art yarn fantasticaly!

This first shawl I'm using some beautiful yarn I fspun!  It's tailspun kid mohair, rambo locks, xl merino locks, cotswold locks, fabric, bling, bamboo, sari silk, banana silk, and novelty yarn snippets. I started weaving before I even took good yarn shots!!

I used a bamboo/silk blend for the warp..

I am SOO excited!! I am LOVING the project!!  It's just over 12" wide, 5' long (before fringe) shawl.

I just finished my second shawl and it's my most favorite thing EVER!!  For the weft, I corespun the yarn from a fun mix of textured batts with a soft base of baby alpaca and cashmere. I added some strips of a colorful silk scarf, brightly dyed banana silk, and strands of rainbow sequins.  I autowrapped the yarn in a silver holosparkle thread-

I used an organic cotton yarn in chocolate for the warp.

I wove it on my Ashford Knitters Loom.  It's 18 inches wide and just over 6ft w/o fringe and just about 8ft with fringe. I LOVE LOVE how it turned out! I have 2 skeins left, so I'm going to make a scarf.  Rewarping the loom today for another shawl this size! I just LOVE weaving!!

On Loom Texture-

Finished project!

Happy Friday folks!! Well.. it's just after midnight, so it's technically Friday here! LOL!
I have a super early flight to catch tomorrow to Chicago, so I won't have time to post then. and I've spun some yarns I'm really excited about.. so I figured I'd share before I went to bed.. since it is Friday.. lol!!

The first is my most favorite!! I'm taking it with me to start knitting with. It was for the shop.. but I just can't let it go!! LOL!!
I spun some amazing yarnzombie (lufah) balls that were a blue/lavender and green. there were super awesome scotch mule locks and tons of sparkle! Jacki called them Tide Pool.  I really wanted the yarn to look like a tide pool, so I corespun the roving, and added tail spun locks, bits of fleece and different sparkle to mimic the critters you find in tide pools.
128 yards

Here is a fun "scrap" yarn on the bobbin.. this is a HUGE pile of random fiber that I put on the floor and just pull from..

Here's the finished yarn.. 6 oz, 80 yards, SUPER bulky

Here's another yummy corespun I finished yesterday..

Loop feb batt corespun.. with a few spots wrapped in pink lurex yarn, with some gold "key" charms

I can't wait to see what everyone else has spun when I get into Chicago tomorrow, and back to a computer!!  I hope everyone has a great day!!

8  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Feels good to be back.. Finally new yarns and a couple FO's.. on: August 11, 2008 08:35:56 PM
OMG!!  I have missed spinning SOOOOOOOOOOOO much!!  It's so nice now that we are all unpacked (except for my laundry) so I can spin without feeling (too) guilty that I should be doing somthing else..  now I just need to really put away my laundry so we can pack tomorrow for our WEDDING!  Then by this time next week.. my life will FINALLY be back to normal!!!  It's so inspiring to have my craft room finished.. it really is a dream come true..

I did get a little bit of spinning done during the last 2 months.. 3 skiens.. LOL!! Everything else I spun in the last week..  I've really been joinsin..

I'm calling this first one "thrift store treasures", because it reminds me of going thrift store shopping with my friends back in Chicago.  We'd find that totally ugly yet incredibly fabu sweater..  that was usually yellow and purple with lace and ribbons and random colors.. and you'd take it home in the crinkly pink plastic bag...
Well this yarn has all that and more.. It's corespun yellow and purple merino with random colors and sparkles and ribbon.. there's novelty yarns and lace, sari silk, felted nubbies and even pieces of the pink plastic crinkley bag!!!  I really love how this yarn turned out..  It's 2 small skiens.. totaling 77 yards..

I did this feather yarn for a custom order.  It's a merino/silk batt, spun thick and thin.. plied with invisible thread and feathers..
119 yards, Birds of a Feather

Here's a corespun yarn.. again from terrabellaspun batts.  I just LOVE corespinning!!  This yarn is totally sparkley, that the photos don't show well!!
Lavender Fizzie, 77 yards

Then I've finished all of these in the last week...  LOL!!  I missed spinning SOOOOOOOOO much...

WhatEver!  55 yards..  corespun TerraBellaSpun batts.. I LOVE the texture in this one.. I'm on such a corespinning kick.. I have to keep myself from corespinning everything!!

Reckless Abandon, 119 yards, spun from Lufah's roving balls!  I LOVE Jacki's balls!  I'm totally keeping this yarn and bringing it with me to chicago to knit with during my wedding weekend!

Candy Sprinkles, 101 yards.  50/50 Merino/bamboo from creatively Dyed.

Now this was a perfect example of the monitor not being true to the colors of the roving, as I had NO idea the roving was a total pink base.. I didn't know it had any pink..  so I wasn't *thrilled* with the colors.. but it spun up like butter and really turned out nicely!! I love how soft and shiny it is!! I actually like the colors now that it's spun!   I NEVER spin 2 plys..  but it was fun to do it with this.. it just seemed to call for a 2ply..  and I like how the colors blend. I can't wait to spin the seawool I got!!

I spun up my May fiber of the month from Funky Carolina  This squooshy sw merino screamed for a soft spun.. so that's what I did..
Seascape, 170 yards.. slightly thick and thin soft spun.

Chocolate Rainbow, 139 yards..  from WoolyTreasures batts.  I LOVE how these spun up with the bits of sparkles and locks here and there..

Finally, I got my July Traveling Rhinos Deluxe club installment a few weeks ago, and I had to dive into the roving that was included.. some soft domestic wool that was dyed black and grey..  I spun it thick and thin and plied it with sparkley holographic silver thread..
Shades of Grey, 79 yards

I have a couple scarves that I finished while my spinning stuff was packed while we were moving..

These batts..

Became this yarn..

That I knit and dropstitched into this scarf..  it's so soft and squooshy and I LOVE how it sparkles!!  It's totally for me and I can't wait until it's cold enough to wear it!!

This next one needs to be blocked.. and I need to add the chocolate bamboo singles I spun for fringe..  I spun this yarn from 4 Loop babycakes (mini batts)..

and then K1, yo, K2tg (cast on 21)

I love the sari silk blobs..  I think this one is for me too!! LOL!!
9  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Fiber Friday 5/23/2008 on: May 23, 2008 03:47:06 AM
Happy Fiber Friday everyone!!

I have had a moderately busy week.. I've actually spent more time knitting and crocheting than spinning..  I think my wheel is jealous!!

I have just a few to share today.. All the pics were taken before the twist was set..  I"m also unsure of yardage this week, as I usually take it after washing, so if there's shrinkage I can accout for it..  so I'm not sure of yardage for these this yet

I spun up my first silk hankie last week..  very interesting.. not as difficult as I thought it would be..  but I have to be more careful to draft evenly, and not as thin as I did in some places here..  It is really nice though, and I have some more to spin, that I'm really looking forward to..
ChocoBerry Swirl- at least 100 yards...
1 ply silk, 1 ply chocolate bamboo

Milk Chocolate
chocolate bamboo singles, at least 100 yards

This next yarn is from a TravelingRhinos batt set, I got from a destash sale from Funky Carolina.  I dove into them as soon as they arrived.. I loved them so much.  I spun the batts fully..  one red/orange/pinks with gold angelina, then blue/purple/ oranges/reds with gold and silver angelina, then blues/purples with silver angelina.  I'm going to crochet a scarf that fades from the "fire" to "ice"
Fire and Ice, at least 150 yards

For this one, I took 3 loop babycakes, plus some extra black diamond bamboo and extra angelina.  This one is SUPER sparkley!!!  So these three mini batts equal..

Dancing Queen (about 80ish yards)

My last yarn is also from 4 loop baby cakes, along with some extra chocolate bamboo and some extra black diamond bamboo.  I LOVE this yarn and it going to be knit into a skinny scarf for ME Smiley  It's also SUPA sparkley!!  So these three mini's equal..

Bluebird, (at least 100 yards)

I do have a couple FO's..
My first bridesmaid scarf, for my sister (only 5 more to make!!)  It's also my first knit project.. I knit it with yarn I spun from a Loop Spontaneous Spinning Batt

I also finished crocheting a shawl I spun with yarn from a Terra Bella Spun batt..

Happy Friday Everyone!!
10  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / Handspun Bridesmaid shawl/scarves.. One down, 5 to go.. on: May 22, 2008 07:21:35 AM
So my goal has been to spin yarn and crochet shawls/scarves for my bridesmaids as gifts to them for being in my wedding and supporting bryan and I..  So I've been spinning and stashing yarn.. and now that the wedding is in 2 1/2 months.. I figured I better pull myself off my wheel and get started..

So I learned to knit last week.. I'm THRILLED because now I can do both for my gifts..    I also learned that you use less yarn with knitting than crocheting, which is great!!

So I present.. my first knit project EVER..

I started with a beautiful batt of merino, bamboo, alpaca, mohair, wool neps, sequins and loads of sparkles

Spun it into 114 yards (I added some novelty yarn snippets as I spun for extra texture).

It's 52 inches long, 6 inches wide..  I knit and dropstitched on size 17 needles..  Instead of fringing the ends, I sewed on pua shell circle beads.  The irridecence of the beads matches perfectly with the sparklies in the scarf..
