11  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Blankie recon on: September 07, 2009 03:28:13 PM

I trolled around a bit to see if anyone else had posted something similar but didn't see anything in particular. This is my childhood blankie:

As you can see, it's gotten a bit ratty over the years (24 of them, to be exact!). Some details: it's cut into 2 separate pieces. I'd guess each piece is about 1' by 2'. I am not super attached to it, I don't need it to sleep or anything, but I was trying to come up with a cool way to recon it and display it as the sacred artifact that it is.

The best idea that I've been able to come up with is to crochet a new blanket around it.

My mom suggested soaking it in glue and making a sculpture of some sort, but I don't think that 24 year old crocheted yarn is going to be the easiest to coax into a recognizable shape.

Has anyone else gracefully retired their own or someone else's blankie? Any ideas?

16  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / 1st embriodery - Tattoo inspired on: May 24, 2009 09:11:30 AM
This is my first piece of embroidery! I put it together for my Mom for Mother's Day / her birthday. It was really fun, and I've already started on my next piece. Smiley I was really inspired by all of the work here at Craftster.

On to the pictures!!

It was so much fun, and my Mom loved it! She laughed when she unwrapped it - which is exactly the reaction I was going for. (Although, then my brother said "Show her the one you actually got!", which she didn't find as funny)

LOVE that quote from RENT! It was my senior quote in my high school yearbook! Smiley

Wow thats amazing Smiley  Maybe thats what I need to do, I'll be more likely to finish an afghan if I do it in smaller bits.

totally! that's what I loved about this and why I was actually able to finish it - so portable. I would never have finished if I had to lug around a half-finished blanket everywhere I went.

It's lovely! What yarn did u use?

I used 4 (or 5? I lost count...) Caron One Pounders in Cream. Basically, the cheapest way to make this blanket! I can't imagine how much it would have cost using a better quality yarn. I'm pretty happy with my yarn choice (although the pops thought it was peach). The only thing is, like I said, the patterns in the book didn't all come out to 7x7 for me and the acrylic didn't really block well.
