Okay, since peachessunshine is out of town, she asked me to post pictures for her.  So, this is what I sent her!  She said that she would love something embroidered, stenciled, and quilted, and I aim to please!

The first two items were based around a last-minute side note she said to me, that she really liked sea creatures and anchors.  I ran with it!

I embroidered this happy squid for her out of shades of maroon and orange.  I imagine that he would be very huggy, and wouldn't understand that squid-sucker hugs would be less than pleasant for the human half of the hug.  He just loves everyone so much!  His suckers are made out of french knots, which I learned how to do just for him.

I then stenciled this anchor onto a blue shirt.  The stencil wraps around the side of the shirt, with the rope coming around the left side.  It's kind of hard to tell in the picture, but there's a little bit of silver mixed into the white, so the rope is slightly pearlescent-ish.

Last, since she wanted something quilted and full quilts take more time than I had (also, sending a quilt would use all 5 of my points, which would be sad) and she also said she drank a lot of coffee, I went with a quilted mug rug!  I pulled four of her favorite colors and made a diagonal stripey pattern.  Three buttons sewn on the end made a little accent, with some contrast white stitching.

I'm so glad you liked everything, peachessunshine!  It was so fun to craft them for you.

I just received today, and I'm so excited!  Prepare to be jealous, guys.

The box was stuffed so full, and when I opened it up, this came out first - this awesome fractal throw!

It's all in these spacey turquoise shades, and lined in this super adorable throwback polka dot fabric.  It's currently on my lap keeping me toasty!

I also got this spectacular shawl, which is pretty much my new favorite thing ever.  I'm already figuring out what shirts would be best to wear with it (but it's so awesome I could wear a barrel with it.)

It reminds me of a stained glass window - like she punched out the glass panes and made a shawl with all the leading!  I love it.

I am super in awe of your yarn skills, peachessunshine!  As far as I know, these were made by MAGIC.  Sheer MAGIC.  Thank you so much!  Cheesy

For this swap, you need to list the crafts youre good at and the crafts youd like to swap for.  PLEASE list as many in each group as you can, because this is going to be a very complicated parternering process, and the more information I have, the easier it will be and the better your partners will be matched!  For each category of craft youd like to receive, provide three examples or hints of crafts youve liked, in addition to your questionnaire answers.  I highly encourage further communication and stalking between partners, but this will at least give your partner a jumping point to go from.  You are welcome to make this exact craft for your partner, but you are also welcome to take it as inspiration to plan a new craft from based on their tastes.

Due to the nature of the swap, please dont decide to try to learn a new craft for this swap.  This is about working with crafts were already skilled with.

To be explicitly clear, newbie swappers are welcome on this swap, but you must fulfill all of the swapper conditions.

5  Little Red Riding Hood Bag in Stenciling: Completed Projects by sirael on: March 20, 2012 08:03:14 PM
So now that my partner Teamama's received her package from our Grimm Swap, I can start posting projects!  I designed this drawing of Little Red venturing into the woods, before she ventures off the path.

After I drew out the image and started cutting, I realized that there were a lot of areas of floating negative space that I would have to iron down independently... I considered changing the design, but I liked it too much, so I just did it anyway.  It worked out!  Still, I won't be doing that again.

The stencil was done with freezer paper.  Because the bag has about ten folds in all the sides and corners, it was difficult to get a really good seal in there, so the lines aren't quite as crisp as I wanted.  But I'm still happy with how it came out.

If you look really closely, you can see the wolf's eyes and nose hidden in the bushes at the end of the path.

My partner's kids have co-opted the bag as a library book bag, which I think is just adorable, and a perfect use for the bag.

6  Re: Grimm Swap Gallery! in The Swap Gallery by sirael on: March 12, 2012 01:43:27 PM
I just received from Teamama, and oh my goodness!  This is without a doubt the best swap package I have ever gotten.  I'm feeling a bit nervous about my package to her, it pales in comparison!

I should have taken pictures of everything all wrapped up attractively (sorry, Teamama, I had to sacrifice attractive wrapping in favor of bubble wrap, in your case...) but I completely forgot to, because I was so excited that I just started opening everything after I read the letter enclosed.

The first thing I noticed was that everything in the box smelled delicious!  That would be because of the charming little tea envelope!  She printed the inside fabric with quotes from Monroe - oh, Monroe one-liners, they will always be funny.  The outside is this adorable turquoise fabric that is my absolute favorite color.  And just because she is so awesome, she didn't send it empty, but she put three little home-mixed teabags in there!  You'll notice Morning in the Meadow, Grandmother's House, and Huntsman's Blend.  They smell so amazing; after typing this up, I'm going to go right to the kitchen to make a giant mug and curl up with a book!

Then there is this shell necklace, modeled after the one Nick gifts Juliette in the Hansel and Gretel episode.  It's so fun!  Subtle fan things are awesome.  I definitely know a few tees it will look very cute with.

There's also a knit envelope clutch that looks like wolf pelt!  Wink Well, it must be a safe place to put my cash and phone while on the town, because nobody would mess with blutbad anything.

And finally, the piece de resistance!  Tea mentioned in the opening letter a few clues on how to wear this, and I was already getting excited about it before I opened it up and nearly died.  YES, Tea made me a Red Riding Hood capelet, like the one in the pilot!  You know you're jealous.  Am I still wearing it, typing all of this up?  Yes.  Yes, I am.  Don't lie, you would be too.

My poor modeling skills don't quite show off the cape to the height of its awesome, so my effusive text will have to make up for it, haha.

Thank you so much, Tea!  You are an awesome swapper and a great organizer!  <3

7  Re: Sherlock Holmes Swap Gallery in The Swap Gallery by sirael on: January 30, 2012 04:05:18 PM
Oh, man, guys!  I finally got to pick up my box at the post office (3 minutes before closing!  Yikes!) and wow, was I spoiled!  All the crafts had cute little tags, and they're all great.

I'll start off with my favorite, the Moriarty Approved Necklace (TM).

It's got a little bitty key, knife, and revolver!  AND LOOK!

THERE'S A LITTLE BITTY BULLET.  I just about died.  I am extremely sad that I can't wear this necklace to work, because I must wear it at the next possible opportunity.

After that, there was this faux-wood painted box that was decorated with Dancing Men to read my username and the names of the Sherlock Holmes main characters:

It's pretty awesome!  And it had all of these nifty goodies inside:

Sherlock quote candles, in three flavors.

A box decorated to show Sherlock's travels to Tibet.

A horse brooch given to Sherlock by the grateful owners of the Silver Blaze.

A hat/straight pin given to Sherlock by Queen Victoria (now I seriously need a Victorian hat to wear this with!)

Speaking of Queen Victoria, bookstorebabe cut out a bit of the wallpaper from 221B and put it in a frame for me.  I laughed so hard!

A frame with old-fashioned illustrations of Holmes.  It's reversible, and the front has a little magnifying glass.  I like to think that it's a little scrapbook-style wall decoration Watson made Smiley

And, last but most certainly not least, a rat!  The tag that accompanied this had me in stitches.  "Thought for sure I'd get an idea using the Giant Rat of Sumatra.  Didn't.  Sure I'll think of one after it's in the mail!  Have a rat anyway."

I've named him Moran.  I thought it befitting.  Moran is very happy with his new home, and has already staked out his own territory.  Woe betide any misguided detectives from Scotland Yard who hope to encroach.  Cheesy  There's murder in his beady little eyes.

Thanks, bookstorebabe!  You are so awesome it is not funny.

9  Elder Futhark Yggdrasil Rune Set in Completed Projects by sirael on: October 13, 2011 01:27:19 PM
So now that my partner's received, it's safe for me to post this!  As part of the Back to Hogwarts swap, one of the requirements was to do a craft on your partner's favorite class.  Billiemarie listed Ancient Runes as her favorite, and I decided to go big or go home and make it my large!  I saw a similar runes set on her wist and went for it.

First, I found an ugly, unfinished wooden cigar box at Michael's.  I mostly liked it because the quality of wood wasn't bad, and because it had nice hinges.  That got sanded down about fifty times with varying qualities of sandpaper until it felt like velvet.

Then I went to Home Depot and got a few feet of flat, plain wood molding.  There were so many designs that were carved or rounded on one side that it was a little difficult!  I'm fairly certain it was pine, but not 100% sure.  I used a mitre box with a razor saw and made a little jig to chop up a whole bunchful of little pieces to the exact same size.  They ended up being an inch and change long and just under an inch wide.  It made a nice domino shape.  I cut out 26 pieces - 24 for the Elder Futhark runes, and then two extra blanks just in case billiemarie needed to replace some.

Each rune piece was sanded down on all of its sides to make it smooth, then I went through and sanded down the corners of them at a beveled angle so that 1) there weren't any sharp edges, 2) they would flip and fall better when she cast them.

After that, I had all of my wood prepped to woodburn!  I drew a birch tree onto the front of the box with a little banner that said "Yggdrasil," which is the name of the Nordic Tree of Life.  I woodburned those in - that took forever, but it was fun!  Then I drew out the runes on the individual rune pieces and burned those in, too.

At that point, I had a box and a bunch of pieces of wood with designs, but they were still raw, unfinished wood.  I went to Home Depot again and bought a can of combination polyurethane-stain in Classic Oak Satin 370 by Minwax Polyshades.  After painters-taping the inside edges of the box, I stained/poly'd that heartily for three coats, sanding with a steel wool ball in between coats.

Staining the rune pieces was a little more difficult.  What I ended up doing, on my father's brilliant suggestion, was pricking the top of each piece with a safety pin and using the pins to dangle them off of the poles of an old oven rack.  That way, I could paint all of the sides at the same time and hang them to dry safely.  I did a few coats on those, too.

Finally, done!  I am so, so proud of the final result, and I'm glad billiemarie seems to be enjoying them!

(The runes don't have quite as much color variation as the picture would imply.  There is some natural change in how the wood grain soaked up the stain, but mostly in the picture it's just awkward shadows making some of them look super dark.)

Happy to hear comments/criticism/anything!

To the mods: If this is posted in the wrong place, please let me know!  I didn't see wood crafting in any of the other boards.  The closest I could find was toys, and this really isn't a toy.  Smiley

ETA: Oh, wow!  Thanks so much for the Featured Project, guys!  That's incredibly flattering.

Okay, I've received from billiemarie!  Now it's time for me to show off the charming package I got and for all of you to be jealous Cheesy

Flourish and Blotts sent me this exclusive set of the Secret Book of Secrets and a self-inking quill.  I love the ragged edges of the handmade book and the little charm woven into the quill's wrapping.

Now all I need are a few good charms to steal the noses off of anyone that tries to steal the Secret Book of Secrets' secrets!

For my favorite class, Potions, I was sent a few super important bottles!  I've got a little bottle of Bezoars for my potions use and anti-poisons emergencies.  They're actually little Horehound candies!  I'd never actually had a horehound candy before, so this was all brand new to me.  They're a little strange, but quite good!  I love hard candies.  The twine winding around the bottle's neck and its label make it look super real.

Accompanying the Bezoars was this little bottle of Skelegro!  Billiemarie knew that I work in a hospital, and gave me this super-helpful potion accordingly!  I think this is my favorite piece.  It's even got the little skeleton on it!  I love it so much.

For my Ravenclaw house loyalties, I got this handy dandy bag.  It's painted with "Ravenclaw" on one side and "Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure" on the other side.  I'm pretty sure it's made out of a cuddly t-shirt, because the fabric is so soft!  Clever Ravenclaw, billiemarie.  She suggested I use it for books and groceries, which I think is a perfect plan; the silvery tape lining looks like it would insulate my groceries very well!

I also got this pair of Ravenclaw earrings with little glass beads and vegan pearls.  I am such an earring addict.

And finally, a little braided bookmark with a Hippogriff charm, for my favorite magical creature!  As fellow Ravenclaws, she knows that I'll be reading half of my life away, anyway.  Wink

Quite a lovely package!  Thank you, billiemarie!  It's totally awesome.  I'm planning places to use/put/wear them now!

(BTW, if you can't find your camera, I took pictures of what I sent you before I sent; just let me know if you need them.)
