21  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Canadian Legal Issues with Small Businesses? on: December 09, 2007 04:22:50 PM
I've seen some various posts regarding the US, but haven't seen any regarding Canada, which of course, I'm in.

I have a basic website design which my dad will help me piece together, and an etsy shop with nothing in it (just there so I can save the name).

Also, technically speaking, do you need a business lisence if you were just to use etsy? What about sales tax?

I'm finding it somewhat difficult to find information on starting a Canadian small home business online.

Further questions:
Do I need to register for a tax number? (and what do I do once I have one?)  Do I need to set up a business bank account? Do I need a business lisence? Do I need a permit to work from home?  How does all that work? And even more important - how much is this all going to cost??

Also, because I'm currently underage, would it be legally sound for my parents to do deal with most of these legal matters for me?

A BIG thanks for anyone that helps me with this!
I really want to be able to set up my website with stuff to sell during my holiday break.

22  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Holiday Card Project on: November 24, 2007 07:31:44 AM
Just thought I'd try promoting it here ^^
Every year for the past few years Deviantart has run a Holiday Card Project.
The cards are distrubeted by hand to individuals in hospitals, mostly in the US, but also around the world.

In return you get that lovely warm fuzzy feeling of doing something nice. And if that weren't enough:
"Every deviant who submits a card will be given a free one month subscription to deviantART, as well as being entered into a drawing for prizes"

Though technically you can buy storebought cards, I figured you crafty people might have other ideas up your sleeve Wink

Happy Card Making! Cheesy

24  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / LOVE... is picture heavy on: November 10, 2007 06:24:47 PM
What happens when you find out that the bully from middle school is officially going out with your boyfriend's best friend?
You vent by posting a completed project that you never got around to posting before.

I've already worn it to school twice ^^;

I took a blue notes T and some bits from a white & gold shirt that had a stain on it. I cut out chunks of the pink shirt in the shapes of
the letters. I then cut out squares of the gold &white fabric, sewed it underneath, then cut off the extra bits.

Working with stretchy fabric is a pain :/ but I like the outcome ^^

(in the mirror - hence being backwards)

The colours are actually brighter.

25  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Adult Costumes: 7 Deadly Sins on: November 02, 2007 02:18:37 PM
I've pretty much been in love with sewing since last year, when I was 15, I got my sewing machine. So for this year, probably my last year of trick-or-treating (at 16) I decided I wanted to do something special - make a group cosumte for all some of my friends.

My friends and I went as the seven deadly sins to our high school's halloween dance and for trick-or-treating (We collected canned food for the food bank ^^ ). I made 6 out of the 7 costumes. Ironically, the girl who was being Sloth decided she wanted to make her own.

Vanity and Wrath weren't finished in time for the dance (the 28th of Oct.) The person who was Wrath was too busy to come, and Vanity wore her own dress that night. She was super happy to recieve her purple one on Halloween night. (So when I say pre-Vanity, I mean the person who's Vanity in a dress I didn't make)

Note: I'll be referring to people as their costume.

*Goth-Girl was Gluttony for the dance but decided on a different costume for halloween. Vanity's boyfriend decided he'd take the place of Gluttony*

The result:

Left to right: Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Greed (tied up so it wouldn't drag before she wore her heels), Pre-Vanity

Left to right: Envy, Gluttony, Lust

Me making the last adjustment to Wrath. Male Gluttony, Vanity, Sloth and Goth-Girl are sitting.

Gluttony, Sloth, Wrath, Goth-Girl, Vanity, Lust

Me modeling Greed and Envy.

Here's my inspiration. Some of the dresses are really close, while others are a fair bit off.

I spent sooo long making these dresses and I'm so happy that my friends appreciate me and them. Most of them have already said that they plan to use their dresses for fancy occasions ^^

Thank-you so much for viewing and reading, I hope you like! Cheesy

p.s. I'm Lust.
p.s.s. For Lust I used a New Look Pattern, and I altered it for Envy. I made Gluttony and Greed from scratch. For Wrath and Vanity I used the basis of how to assemble a dress from the same New Look Pattern, but didn't actually use any of the pattern pieces XD
26  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Frankenstein Bag on: October 27, 2007 12:44:43 PM
Now for all of those who have actually read Frankenstein, we all know that he's not actually an insane looking creature with bolts through his neck and green skin. In fact, he never even had a name! His creator was simply named Victor Frankenstein, which is where we have derived his creation's name from.

But since it's halloween, the holiday of scary things and pretending, let us all just pretend that Frankenstein is this green thing with stitches... but a lot cuter!

So without further ado, I present my Frankenstein Bag:

With stuff in him and closed:

Just look into his cute little eyes! How could you not vote for him?

Thanks for looking!  Grin
27  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Necklace made from a cell phone charm on: October 27, 2007 07:20:01 AM
So I was browzing through H&M a few weeks ago, in the kids section ^^; (their 14/16 sizes still fit me, and I honestly think that some of their kids stuff is way better than their adult clothing.) and I see a cell phone charm that I fall in love with. AND it's on sale! ($2 reduced from about $5)
So what's the problem?
My cell has no where to put charms!  Sad
So I bought it anyway, and turned it into a necklace ^^ (So, basically, I just made the chain ^^; Hence why it doesn't exactly match the colour of the chains that were part of the charm - -; )

And please excuse the v-neck XD It's just the kind of shirt it looks best with, as it dangles kind of low and just doesn't look the same ontop of a shirt.
28  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Help! I purchaced a dress pattern... on: October 16, 2007 05:50:36 PM
New Look Bin 74 #6699 to be more exact
I've cut out all the pattern pieces and am I ready to go... but it's been over a year since I've last used a pattern! and I've only used them once or twice for easier things...

I can't find any 'instructions' persay... so could anyone help me figure out an order in which to do things? ^^;

Also... how do I go about lining it? :/ The bodice and the mid-section both call for lining.

30  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Smulis - Angelic Giraffe on: October 10, 2007 03:49:04 PM
I hope you guys like Smulis! I already know she loves you (she's a very friendly giraffe Wink )

up close

Smulis on the clouds!

So here's my inspiration:

She is an amazing artist and a really sweet girl ^^ English isn't her first language, but she still amazes me in her poetry. She's really multi-talented! I really encourage you to check out her work <3

The green balloon represents beauty, because she believes everyone is beautiful on the inside.
The red balloon represents love, because she loves everyone.

* I didn't include a tail because I was referencing the picture on her website in the top left corner, oops!

I made her using felt, paint, ribbon, and some scrap fabric for the balloons (Ooh, and stuffing of course!)

And if you like her, please remember to vote!  Wink
