1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Dying jersey knit? on: May 03, 2009 07:30:19 AM
I bought a jersey knit dress that I really liked... except for the colour. It's a light purple and just looks too washed out on me. I'm hoping to make it a dark blue or purple - is there any way to do this?
What kind of dye can I use/what method?
Any tips/tricks?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Grin

2  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Watercolor-looking fabrics? on: April 10, 2009 07:50:35 AM
I was wondering where I might be able to get fabric like this watercolour print (that overlaps the opaque silk layer in the dress below).
The fabric doesnt need to be indentical, but it you know of any sites with fabrics that are similar and could be used for the same purpose - please let me know! Cheesy

3  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / How do you remove pencil from fabric? on: January 21, 2009 05:52:43 PM
So my school has a lovely manequin that I have the pleasure of taking home for the exam break. However, about a year ago some lovely sudents decided to make our female feminine more, well, feminine, by drawing in extra 'details' with a pencil  - -;

I would love to be able to return the manequin to school without these markings (but without runining it!) Is there any way I can do this? I tried a simple eraser and a bit came out, but not much.

The mannequin is a cream/off-white kind of coloured fabric if that helps any.

(by the way - I reallllyyy had no idea where to put this. So if there is a better board for this please move it there - thanks! Cheesy )
4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Prom Dress Help Please! :) on: January 15, 2009 04:51:32 PM
So I've started to think about making my own prom dress.
Here are two that I've found so far that I like:

Description: "Strapless bodice with vertically pleated bust line, ruched waistline and a tiered, pleated A-line skirt. Organza."

I guess my first question is - does anyone know of any patterns that're really similar?
If not, does anyone know of any tutorials that might help me out with any aspects fo these dresses, or any prom dress making tips in general?

Any help is greatly appreciated - thanks! ^^
5  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Three Es in Wonderland on: November 04, 2008 07:09:37 PM

Three of my friends and I (all of our names start with the letter E - a pure coincidence I swear) decided that we wanted to be Alice in Wonderland Characters for halloween. But of course - I'm the only one out of us who can sew Smiley

So here's a collage of the three costumes I made:

I'm Alice and my friends are the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit. I mainly used two simplicity patterns - which is why they're not exactly true to their original costumes, but rather an interpretation.

Included in the pictures is a Queen of Hearts costume, made by a friend with the same name as me Smiley She didn't make the dress or gloves - but she did embroider them.

Thanks for looking!

What genres of books do you enjoy (romance, science fiction, literary fiction, etc)? Childrens/ classics/ modern classics (anything quirky really)
Who are your favorite authors? Tove Jansson, Ian Banks, Dorothy Parker, George Orwell, Michael Bond, Mervyn Peake, Philip Reeve, Antoine de Saint Expury, Maurice Sendak, Herge, Jack Kerouac, Frank Muir, Edward Gorey
What are your favorite books? 'Moomin Valley in November', 'The Little Prince', 'Down and out in Paris and London', 'The Crow Road', all Paddington books, Tintin books and 'The Wind in the Willows'
What genres do you NOT enjoy? anything that takes itself unnecessarily seriously and unimaginative fluff (not big on 'da vinci code' style bllockbuster type of things, or 'Bridget Jones' typo stuff)
Do you have any allergies? None known
Do you smoke/have animals or have any common allergens in your house? No
What are your favorite colors? Green (quite like yellow too, but when used together they are the colours of Norwich City FC, which is just not spoken about where I live!)
Would you be willing to craft something other than a totebag/bookmark? Yep

Would you like to receive something instead of a totebag/bookmark? No
If you answered yes above, please fill out these questions:
What might you be interested in recieving instead?
Anything you don't want?

If you answered no above please fill out these questions:
How large would you like your totebag to be? Big enough of fit an A4 sketchpad, a novel and my lomo camera in it!
Long or short strap? shortish would be great!
Any other specifications? (eg. need it to close at the top)? some way of closing at the top would be great

Do you have a blog, wists, or web page for your swap partner to look at? not really... just my holding page at www.rakehunter.com - but it doesn't really give you much info!
Anything else you might like to tell your partner? I am an animation graduate, and I looooovve children's book illustration, esp from books of my childhood (as mentioned above). My other interests (not sure if they'll help or not!) are MUSIC (I love music of absolutely ALL sorts - to listen to and play - I play piano, guitar, violin and musical saw), odd old things (I have a fascination with anything wartime-onwards - radios, gramophones, old cameras, printing presses, etc.), kiting, cycling and all animals, insects and fish.
7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / 7 year old boy on: May 15, 2008 12:38:39 PM
All I really know is that he's related to my boyfriend, and likes soccer and hockey.
Technically I've been told to not worry about a gift - but I can't go empty handed!
I have a mini "Where's Waldo?" book I want to include, but I'm unsure of the main gift...

I'd like to craft, but I wouldn't mind purchacing something either.

I've asked around, and so far have:
*hot wheels
*toy gun (No way. His parents would hate me XD )
* action figures
*something with Spiderman (Which I'm *pretty* sure he also likes)

I was thinking about painting a wooden letter M (for his name) with sports & such. But then realized it might not go with his room...
not that a 7-year-old boy would care! But his parents might - and I don't wanna give him something useless.

Another idea - I could make him a teddy. But that'd be way too girly. Ummm. What about a monster?

Ideas would be super-ly appreciated!!
8  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Message to buyers? on: April 19, 2008 11:41:53 AM
"Message to buyers
we send this along with every transaction email for each item you sell"
So I just realized this pretty neat feature (even if it should've been really obvious)

If you bought something, what would you like to be in this message?

If you're a seller, what do you include here?

I'm trying to figure out what kind of stuff I should include/what people would like to see.

Please help guys!  Grin
9  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Scrabble Necklaces? on: April 19, 2008 07:06:50 AM

So I've had a bunch of scrabble pieces for the longest time and made a couple necklaces out of them. But I realized that the findings I had weren't really working out for me. So for curiosity's sake, I did a search today on etsy.
Not only did I find that people were already making them (Great minds think alike) but I followed one to a blog to find that she was upset that people were taking her idea ^^;

I thought of this idea on my own & wasn't aware of hers untill now (Total proof on how much I live in a bubble sometimes I guess ^^; )

Anyway. So as I've stated, my problem lies in the fixing. Here's one of the ones I found on etsy: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11085680 Does anyone know what those are called/where I can buy some?

But also if anyone can think of another fixing that would work well - that'd be awesome! I don't have a huge amount of experience with jewellery (though I certainly have some) and that was the only problem with my original plan. But I don't want to turn what I thought was an original idea into a copy-cat design Sad so other suggestions would be nice....

But I am going to see what's currently out there and try to make things as different as I can - while still keeping with my original scrabble-tile idea.

And this is where I appologize for rambling!

So, for those who didn't want to read all that:
What is a good fixing to use to turn a scrabble tile into a pendant? What is it called and where can I buy some?

Thanks!  Grin
10  Calls for Swap Angels / Swap Angel Archive / Reading Rainbow 4 - 1 Angel FOUND on: April 04, 2008 02:43:11 PM
Please PM if interested!

Swap Name: Reading Rainbow 4

# of Flakers: 1

This package would be for Melladh. Shipping is to Sweden
Instead of recieving FOC status, you will be recieving a package from her in exchange So basically you're replacing her previous partner, as the two of you swap with eachother.

You will be expected to purchace a book (new or used or one you own) and craft an item (medium or large) related to books.

Info on what to make her:
Who are your favorite authors? Jasper Fforde, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman
What are your favorite books? The Thursday Next series (well of lost plots, etc), Abarat, Discworld series, anything by Gaiman though Anansi Boys wasn't as dark as I prefer his work to be...
What genres do you NOT enjoy? Romance, crime novels...
Do you have any allergies? Not really though I dislike smoke
Do you smoke/have animals or have any common allergens in your house? I have two cats
What are your favorite colors? Blue, black, cold purple, turquoise, teal, emerald green, vicious dark red... I prefer cold colors, but warm colors can be nice in a place where they belong. I'm not fond of pink.

Would you like to receive something instead of a totebag/bookmark? YES
If you answered yes above, please fill out these questions:
What might you be interested in recieving instead? Book cozies.. uhh... anything except bags or clothing really.
Anything you don't want? No bags please! And.. preferably no clothing Cheesy

Information about the package you would be recieving from her:
The books are fantasy books, but not classic fantasy. They range from pretty regular though non-classic fantasy to what doesn't fit into the fantasy genre at all except that it's not sci-fi and it's certainly not "realistic". That one being comedic as well...
The crafts are mainly blue, one firey orange, one black+rainbowy (featuring cats, it's an awesome fabric but not for someone who doesn't like cats ^^ )... they're fairly genre neutral book crafts.

If you'd like the specifics (aka exactly what she made) I can supply you with that - but it would ruin the fun of the surprise Wink
