1  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: What weird meals have you made while totally broke? on: December 04, 2011 01:09:21 PM
oh I forgot one...
canned salmon with with an egg and crushed crackers and smushed into patties and fried. Just mentioning that makes my sister turn green to this day!  They always had these little soft-ish bones in them. ugh.
2  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: Christmas and Quick! - Edible gifts on: December 04, 2011 01:04:59 PM
Last year I made these for gifts and people loved them

get some of those little grid shaped pretzels
lay them out on a cookie sheet
top each one with a Rolo
put in the oven and bake just until the Rolo gets soft (happens very quickly)
take out of the oven a gently push a toasted pecan half into the Rolo
Once they cool it's like a salty turtle.

bookstorebabe - butter on saltines was one of my favorite snacks as a kid!

a big pot of spaghetti with meat sauce (ugh..for days and days on end. I can't even gag it down anymore)
SOS - but my mom used to make it was a can of tuna instead of meat - so is that still SOS? hmm, I don't know.
Also ate a lot of ramen. ramen with scrambled eggs. ramen with hot sauce.
cinnamon sugar on toasted white bread with margarine.
strawberry jam on generic Ritz crackers.
lentils or beans cooked in the crockpot.
chili over spaghetti noodles
baked potatoes with whatever leftovers were in the fridge dumped on top

and i don't remember if this was a snack when we were broke, or just a weird snack, but my sister and I used to eat jello powder. dry. straight from the box. actually, now that I think about it, probably my mother didn't know we were eating dry jello powder...  Cheesy

My plan was to mail today..the box is packed and waiting for one item that I was finishing yesterday. Then, I had a little incident with said item...and now I will be mailing in a couple more days.  I think there's a board around here to post your botched projects...yeah- I'll be headed there soon to post my screw up Smiley (after my partner receives her nice new un-botched item!! Smiley ). Too much coffee + too much talking + not paying close attention = oopsie...  Cheesy

I'm almost done!! Should be able to finish up this weekend and send Monday! 6 days of no power set me back - I was hoping to have my package sent by now! But that's ok, because in the extra time I came up with a fun idea of something I wanted to do!

Good luck to those of you expecting snow and ice!! It must be my storm coming your way!! We got 80 inches last week! yikes. They actually declared our county in a state of emergency. And everyone got snow days for a whole week - except me - where I work was the only business in town open! gah! the luck .....
8  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: Anyone have any good kale recipes? on: January 23, 2010 06:24:28 PM
Last week I steamed some kale, then drizzled it with a bit of garlicky olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of feta.  Simple but really tasty.
9  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: how do you make mushrooms appetizing? on: January 23, 2010 06:22:17 PM
Sauteed baby bellas are really good! And someone else posted a link to stuffed mushrooms - yum!!

I got my hubby hooked on grilled portobello sandwiches -

brush with oil either whole caps or slices and grill on the bbq until tender and cooked- then slap it on some toasted sourdough along with roasted red peppers and some mayo mixed with fresh dill.
