This is my first interaction on this site, so I hope I can be of some help.  Not my idea but read someplace and have practiced that when knitting in stockinette, the first row after the cast on can be done by knitting in the back of each stitch.  This will make the end lay flat.  I have learned, however, that tension should be loose since for some reason this makes the end tighter--or I just knit too tightly.  Hope you can try this and it helps.
