381  Post your CRAFTY Tattoos! in Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects by MareMare on: January 15, 2010 12:44:55 PM
Do you have an awesome crafty tattoo? Maybe it features a sewing machine or an embroidery needle? Post them here and yours just might be the next tattoo on Craftster's Crafty Tattoo Blog Feature!

Here's kittykill's fabulous embroidering lady, a past feature on the blog!

If you have a tattoo you designed or actually tattooed yourself but isn't craft themed, you can post it here:

https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=306140.0

And if you just have an awesome tattoo you want to show off, but you didn't design it, there is a thread in FOC for that!

Viva la tattoos!  Grin

Details of swap:

For this swap, you will crochet a variety of motifs for 1, 2, or 3 partners. First time swappers are limited to 1 partner. For each partner, you will need to make a minimum of 7 different motifs that total at least 25 inches.

This swap is scavenger hunt style, meaning you get to pick your motifs from the variety of options listed below:

1. A flower motif
2. An animal or animal themed motif
3. Octagon shaped motif
4. Motif uses bobble stitches
5. A lacy motif
6. Bullion stitch
7. Plant or veggie themed (pineapple, leaf, etc)
8. Motif is worked diagonally
9. Motif uses hairpin lace or broomstick lace
10. Motif is made up of smaller motifs (think grannys daughters, yo-yos, etc)
11. Tunisian crochet motif

14. Motif is made with complimentary colors (opposite from each other on the color wheel)
15. "Design it yourself" and include pattern that you write
16. Sender's Choice

*Explanation/idea of heritage motif:
 Quote from craftADDchick
"An "ethnic" motif. For example, I'm of Irish (25%), Scottish (25%), Lithuanian (25%), and Heinz 57 (25%... but probably a mix of English, Irish, Scottish and who knows what else... Gramps was from Maine from way back) descent. So, a shamrock, or a "plaid" motif, or a flag motif... or a ketchup bottle"

Note: If you are using motifs that are not symmetrical (such as a rectangle), you should use the smallest measurement to calculate your total inches.

Other rules:
*Only use worsted weight acrylic, unless your partner(s) indicates otherwise.
*All tails need to be woven in, unless your partner indicates otherwise.
*Communication is very important to me, please be sure to send pms to both myself and your partner when you send and receive. Poor communication will be noted in feedback.
*Please somehow label all your motifs with the pattern name and source so your partner and other swap members viewing the gallery will know where it came from, because we will want to duplicate them!  The best way to do this is to tie a piece of paper onto the motif and then include a sheet with pattern name and source or typed pattern if you want!

383  "Gingerbread" teepee in Winter Holidays by MareMare on: January 03, 2010 12:51:24 PM
We did "gingerbread" houses with my little nephews (5, 4, and 18 months) out of chocolate graham crackers. The kids were having a hard time because theirs kept falling down, so I decided to make a teepee instead of a square house. It stayed up really well, and I had a nice flat surface to decorate. I had envisioned an elaborate totum pole with gummy bears and other shapes, but it wouldn't stay together, so my poor little totem just had gum drops and toy soldiers. Just now I thought I should have used a skewer to hold it together instead of just relying on icing. D'oh!

384  Semi-Homemade Chicken Pot Pie of Deliciousness in Recipes and Cooking Tips by MareMare on: January 03, 2010 10:24:55 AM

I made chicken pot pie the other night and it was perfect for a cold winter night!

This is all you need for delicious semi-homemade chicken pot pie:

2 chicken breasts
stock or broth
2 stalks celery, roughly chopped
2 large carrots, roughly chopped
1/2 large onion, roughly chopped
2 cloves garlic, cut in half
celery salt
black pepper
poultry seasoning

1 cup chopped carrot
2 small peeled, chopped potatoes
1/2 cup diced onion
1 1/2 cups mushrooms, sliced
1 cup frozen peas
1/4 cup white wine
1-2 T cornstarch, mixed into 2-3 T Cold water

1 store bought, refrigerated pie crust

To get the gravy/sauce super flavorful I started with some stock I had made a while ago. When I have extra stock I freeze it in ice cube trays and then stick it in a ziplock bag in the freezer.

I boiled 2 chicken breasts in my stock along with carrots, celery, and onions to make a kind of "double stock." I seasoned with a little poultry seasoning, celery salt, and lots of fresh cracked black pepper. After the chicken was cooked I tossed the veggies and strained my super flavorful stock off and cut the chicken into cubes. While I cooked chopped potatoes and chopped carrots in the newly delicous stock, I sauteed mushrooms and onions in a separate pan until they started to get brown. Then I deglazed the pan with a little white wine and added the diced chicken, and onion mixture into the pot with the stock. I added a cup of frozen peas and then thickened the mixture with a little cornstarch mixed into cold water.

Spread it into a pie plate, topped with a store bought refridgerated pie crust, and baked until golden brown. I should have put an egg wash on the top but I forgot. This made 2 pot pies, I cooked one the other night and froze the filling from the other one to make another night.

Yum!

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR LIST UNTIL YOU RECEIVE A PM SAYING THAT YOU HAVE BEEN APPROVED.

Questions? Please post here in the discussion/gallery:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=332558.0

Swap name: January 2010 Birthday Swap
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: MareMare
Sign-up date range:  Jan 1 - Jan 31
DATE TO SEND ITEMS BY:  2 weeks after you make a claim

Limited to a certain number of people?: No.
Restricted to people who all live in the same country? No.
You must be 16 years old to swap.

Swap Organizer himself/herself meets these conditions:
- Has fully read the Swap Info Guide: YES
- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES
- Is at least 18 years old: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:
- Has been a member for at least one month: YES
- Has posted at least 15 times: YES
- Has completed one swap successfully before signing up for multiple swaps at a time: YES
- Is not currently signed up for more than five swaps: YES
- Does not have any negative feedback: YES
- Participant has agreed that he/she is at least 16 years old: YES
- Participant lives in the United States: YES/NO
   - If yes, understands that Delivery Confirmation number is required for this swap: YES
   - If no, understands that a mailing receipt copy is required for this swap: YES

Details of swap:  This swap was organized so everyone can get something crafty for their birthday!  Please read the guidelines carefully.

1. This swap is list style, like the Ongoing Wishlist Swap, however it is NOT chain style. You can choose any birthday craftsters list that is posted, rather than only being able to pick from the last one posted.

2. This is a medium item swap. A medium item is defined as a craft or recon, etc that takes you two hours to complete OR $20 worth of Store Bought Items. (If bought from a thrift store, estimate at what it would have cost new.) However you may also substitute a few small items for a medium.

3. If your birthday is in swap's current month, you can post your birthday wish list for this month. To do that, you must first PM me with the swap questionnaire filled out and wait for approval. While you're waiting, be sure to post in the discussion thread:
https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=332558.0

4. Once you have been approved, you may post your list of things that you would like to receive. This is the format for your lists: First post your location and a short bio of yourself, then a list of crafted items you would like, then craft supplies (if any) and lastly you can put a few extras that arent crafted, things like candy or tea. Remember, the more items on your list, the more likely you are to be chosen. The minimum of items to post is five.  Also including your wists is a good way for people to get the idea of your likes and style.  If you have any allergies please type them in red in your bio section.

5. Please post lists only in this thread. Discussion can be done here in the combined discussion/gallery thread: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=332558.0
Please be sure to post here so that you can be part of the discussion and receive updates

 6. Every birthday participant must make at least one claim. You may have up to two claims at a time, unless you are an FOC or a first time swapper, and then you can claim again once your items are received (not when you mail out). New swappers may only have one outstanding claim; they may claim again after their first claim is received. FOC"s may have 3 outstanding claims at a time. Claims need to be made from the "crafted" and "craft supplies" sections of a person's list. The "extras" are just that--extra items you may want to throw in if you are feeling generous, but claims cannot be solely extras. Keep it crafty :-) (I'm asking that if you are sending mostly supplies, that you craft a little something for the bday babe.)

7. You may get claimed more than once, but your minimum amount to claim is one.  It is possible you may not get claimed at all. In this case you will not be provided a swap angel; angels are only if you get flaked on. However I do my best to make sure everyone gets claimed by keeping track of how many times each person is claimed. If possible try to pick someone who has been claimed 0 times versus someone who has been claimed 3 times.

8. If it is not your birthday but you would like to send a birthday present out you may do so.  Fill out the non-birthday swapper questionnaire and send it to me for approval.  Birthday swappers who receive a present from a non-birthday swapper must send a snail mail thank you card.  You will not receive feedback until I hear from the other swapper that they have received a thank you card.

 9. When you choose to fulfill a birthday wish, PM both the organizer AND the chosen craftster.  At that time, please request the address for where to send it.  After that you have 2 weeks to get the item out the door.

10. It is super important for everyone to keep good communication.  It is REQUIRED that you PM me when you've sent and of course, don't forget the DC#.  It is REQUIRED that when you receive, you PM me and publicly announce in the gallery (even if you don't have pictures).

11. When one of your items is chosen, please cross it out so that it is easier for others to see what has been chosen.
(It wouldn't hurt to thank the person at this time either.)

12. If you are sending late you must PM me by your send-out date.  If your send-out date comes and goes and you dont PM me, you will receive poor communication feedback.  It should not be my job to hunt you down and find out what is going on.

Please make sure to put December Birthday Swap or something equivalent in the subject line on all communications.  The most important thing to me is communication.  Please PM me when you send and receive, and please reply to my PM's to you in a timely manner.

If you format your pm's like this, I'll love you forever  Grin
Format for PM's:

Proper label:
"January Bday Swap" and either "Sign-up," "Claim," "Sent," "Received," or "Question"

When sending sent and received pm's include the send-by date, listed in the second post of the main thread, your user name, their user name and the item. Just copy and past the info from the second post if you want!:

386  Baked Potato Soup and Mushroom Goat Cheese Ciabatta Bread in Recipes and Cooking Tips by MareMare on: December 15, 2009 09:03:01 PM

I put some Baked potato soup in the crockpot this morning and got the bacon broiled up to prep a super simple dinner for tonight. i like to broil bacon--line a rimmed cookie sheet with foil and put bacon on a rack and broil it, turning once. It's awesome and clean-up's a breeze!

Baked potato soup recipe courtesy of the always fabulous Kristin at Iowa Girl Eats. Recipe here~
http://iowagirleats.com/2009/12/14/crock-pot-baked-potato-soup/
I'm pretty sure that any soup you top with cheddar cheese, bacon, sour cream, and green onions is gonna be delicious!

Last night I had some yummy flatbread with wild mushrooms, pancetta, and goat cheese from a local martini bar. It was amazing and I set out to re-create it, because soup and bread is a natural pairing.  Cheesy  A quick trip to Costco for ciabatta bread (I got mini loaves), mushrooms, and chevre and I was a few minutes away from a yummy meal. I just sauteed up the mushrooms until golden, very lightly buttered and garlicked (that's a word, I'm sure of it) the bread, topped with mushrooms, a tiny bit of the aforementioned bacon (a poor girl's pancetta) and cheese and broiled until the cheese was bubbly.

388  NES Controller Mini Quilt in Quilting: Completed Projects by MareMare on: December 04, 2009 11:29:43 PM
I made this mini quilt for my partner Magadoo in the Mini Art Quilt Swap 2!  One of her themes was nintendo/Mario/Zelda and I finally decided on a controller. I used a pebbled looking pattern for the light gray and an animal print for the dark gray, and yummy yummy bamboo blend batting because I love it.  I forget the exact dimensions but it was something like 12 by 30 inches.

I had a little trouble piecing the D-pad since it needed to be outlined in gray and it took me a while to wrap my thick head around that! And it's not as proportional to the A and B buttons as I would like, but overall I think you can tell what it's supposed to be!

I embroidered "start," "select," "A," and "B" but it's kinda hard to see in the pics

Giant Buttons!

389  Re: Christmas Stocking Swap 5 *-*-GALLERY-*-* in The Swap Gallery by MareMare on: December 02, 2009 07:48:41 PM
Here's my awesomeness from Melvinator!

Cute little box that is painted and a magnetic notepad, I needed a new one, my old one lost its magnet!

Box open...full of fun marble magents made with really strong magnets!

Loose tea goodness! A great mug, a decorated tea strainer, and some loose tea (Cherry something? I am brewing some up right now!) Also some cute decorated Christmas ornaments, and some crochet stitch markers. Or zipper pulls I suppose, but I'm gonna use them as stitch markers!

Super cute penguin hand towels! I really needed some new ones too! Along with a matching penguin ornament, some cute icicle ornaments, and snowman salt and pepper shakers!

My awesome stocking! I love the button detail and the fabric is really fun and rich feeling

An advent calendar! I wanted to make her one but couldn't think of a good method, so sent a store bought one. This one is way better, she hand painted each day and it's so cute! I already had to take it away from my nephews, apparently I'm a big meanie because I don't like when they break my stuff.

And my amazing tree skirt! This gave her sewing machine fits but I'm glad she powered through! I love it and look forward to using it for years to come!

Cute covered button detail!

She also sent a really cute wreath made out of ornaments that the post office beat up a bit. None of the balls broke, so I just need to glue it back together. Yay, an excuse to play with the glue gun! I'll post pics when I get it patched up!

Thanks Melvinator!  Grin

I got the most fabulous quilt from playswithneedles today! Seriously, so awesome! She picked my dress form theme, which I also received in the first MAQ so I have the beginnings of an amazing collection now! Check out the presentation, with the ribbon and cool wooden hanger:

A shot of the back to see all the stitching outlines she did

And a couple close-ups! I love the bright colors

And! She sent along the extra fabric. After I saw this I realized that she had added the colored fabric to the dress forms, I thought it had already been colored and she had added outlining!

She said this was her first quilt! And, she didn't think she did a good job with the binding, but I thought it was great and had actually pointed out how good the binding looked to my mom before I read her note!

THank you so much, I really really love this and have to think of an awesome place to put it so I can see it often Cheesy
