This is fabulous!

I have convinced my students that I am the great niece of Prof. Binns (same last name and all).... and recently told them I was going on a mission (when I was actually at a stupid training).... I think I'm going to tell them that my mission was to learn about magical wands.

I teach fourth grade writing by the way... Wink

I realize that this is an incredibly old post, but  I just moved to the Valley (Pharr for now, but likely moving to the Brownsville area) any pointers on must see's, arty areas, anything I should make sure my craft self sees?

I'm definitely looking for a good used furniture store....

Challah looks amazingly delicious.

on the King Arthur note, if you're ever in Vermont their bakery store is totally worth a visit. The best cupcakes in the world and bread and other yum yums! They also teach baking classes!

Thanks for the great comments!

His mood seems to change with where he's placed and how much natural light he gets (or doesn't get).

My cats have recently decided he's fun to jump into and hang out.
9  Texas / Texas: Southeast / What's it like in the Rio Grande Valley area? on: April 26, 2009 12:25:33 PM
Hello Texan craftsters!

I am very excited to be relocating to the Rio Grande Valley area--- I was accepted to Teach for America and will be teaching for two years. I don't know what school I'll be teaching in, and I know that the region is huge.

I have NEVER been to Texas. I know I'm in for a pretty big culture shock; I'm coming from Vermont.

I'm interested in finding out what kind of scene there is in the area. Do you have farmer's markets, neat vintage shops, craft stores? What's the night life like? How are the coffee shops, ARE there coffee shops? What's the best kind of food.... Are there community dark rooms? Can you eat and buy products locally? (as in made there and sold there)

What's housing like? anything I should avoid? Do cell phones work?

SOO many questions!

Any insight, tips, pointers, would be great!

This is great! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it....

I think that the Wonderbread painting is the strongest.. it looks like a photograph! Even knowing that it's a painting I had to look a couple of times.

I really love the homemade bread too... the angle is awesome. However, I think that being next to a painting that takes realism to the max makes me more critical of it.

BUT! I seriously love both paintings. Just my art critique leftovers from college.

(I also think you should have at least gotten a 90! hard grader!)
