2021  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Bracelet turned Tree Pendant on: March 11, 2011 03:53:48 PM
I like your idea of using a bangle bracelet as the base of a pendant! I'm going to steal this. Clever. And that's a great tree. Nice wire wrapping!

Sure, you're welcome! Yeah, the parachute thing kinda threw me, too.
I saved the fabric from a purple umbrella myself, just because I'm amassing scraps for an arty quilt. Someday. Hey, I'll need a good retirement project eventually, right? Smiley And I haven't used that bag tute yet, but I've kept it bookmarked. Can't have too many bags, and I know I'll bust another umbrella soon!

I know what you mean, Moonlit Sun. But, sign up! I have stuff I know I won't use, and I'd love to see someone who can use it have it. Some of us buy stuff to start a craft, and then, once we get into it, discover it's not our cup of tea. I'll never use all the paper I've saved-oh, I'll keep some for decoupage and maybe another altered book if the mood hits, but I'll never do scrapbooks like I thought I would. I snatched up some stamps and hole punches on sale, but they've sat in a box, mostly. Or, we've been doing it a long time and are ready for a change. I don't have the time, the patience, or the eyesight-cursed bifocals!-for cross stitch anymore. Or you're like me, a packrat who can't resist a bargain, sure that I'll do something with it...yeah.
I've found I do like to decoupage and make jewelry, although I have a lot to learn. I look back on the things I've done I liked, and have found they're silly things like windchimes and rayguns, and that I'm happy when my hands are covered with glue. Smiley

I'd posted on the 'what can I do with THIS?' thread, bemoaning the fact that I had old silk shirts that were no longer wearable, but I couldn't part with them...
And Sugaree pointed me here! I had never heard of gibbous before. I've spent the past few days reading this thread. And, WOW. Thanks, Sugaree!
I am so impressed! So much talent and imagination, and so many helpful hints and links. I don't know what I'll make yet. I like the idea of a skirt. I think I need to begin with a base garment, since I'm a newbie at sewing.
And I love the idea of using gibbous for more than clothing-the backpack and apron ideas especially. I just happen to have a torn backpack, hmm...
Anyway, heaven only knows when I'll have something to post, but I'll be lurking like crazy.

2026  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Re: Making lamps out of small bushes or trees on: March 09, 2011 09:13:47 PM
Well, you know to be careful about low wattage and all that, I'm sure. I don't know what kind of plant, but I have an idea...
Green wood is flexible. If you find something bushy/twiggy enough, you can bend and shape the branches. Maybe tie them in place with twist ties or twine while you leave it to dry, and then it should hold its shape.
Or if you find a dead, dry plant that looks suitable, I know people working with dry materials will soak them in water first, to make them pliable. But the green one would probably be best.
It's just a thought-maybe worth a try? Good luck with the lamp!

2028  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: A Green Idea Chain Game 2010 on: March 09, 2011 05:34:24 PM
Thanks, Sugaree! I love all the tips and links. And now I have something to do with my old shirts!
Something else you can do with your old umbrella fabric is making a tote bag. Here's a link to a tute-

Antidigger asked-

What can I make with short bits of kite line (<5yards). For those not in the know, it's braided string of various different weights, very slippery and with no stretch in it. It has a low melting point, but is quite strong for it's width. It's also orange.

Sorry, no ideas!

Man, I so should have signed up, even if I am busy. I was at the bookstore, and guess what I saw in mystery?

I wish I wasn't so busy, but...ah, well.  I shall have to lurk, and look forward to the next swap!
