1  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Discussion and Questions / Felted my own wool and dang it, it is uneven. Help? Ideas to fix? on: November 21, 2010 09:14:04 PM
So, I've felted sweaters before for small sewing projects without any real issue. This time I decided I wanted to felt yardage because I want to make a little boiled wool coat for my son. Well, I got a 98% wool fabric at Joann's washed and dried it on hot about 5 times. My research on the internet seemed to indicate that a 98% wool should felt fine. It felted, however it has come out a little uneven. Parts of it shrank perfectly and lay flat, but then other parts rippled. The flat and ripple parts are very consistent and run in lines parallel to the selvedge each being about 3" wide, so the fabric is now striped in a way. This is really seems to be an issue related to how the fabric was woven based on the consistency (even though it is so weird how consistent it is).

I've thought about taking an iron to it with lots of moisture and steam. I'd put a wet towel over it anyway to iron the wool and prevent it turning shiny on me.

I'm not sure how to fix this, any ideas?
2  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Polka Dot Modern Quilt on: January 09, 2009 08:06:53 AM
This my original design based on a new delightful piecing method I found on HGTV. My original help question is here: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=285285.0

3  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / How do I calculate circles? on: January 02, 2009 07:43:12 PM
I've been really into dot and circle quilts lately. I've been able to master several "patterns" from books (both quarter and half patterns), but now I want to graduate to creating my own designs. I have a wonderful design all laid out. I think the easiest way would to piece half circles and then sew them together.

However, I'm stuck...how to I figure out the correct diameter of my circles to cut, how do I make sure they fit into the outer curve piece?
4  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Modern Dot Baby Quilt on: September 15, 2008 02:37:35 PM
This quilt is based on the Love Beads Pattern from the book, The Modern Quilt Workshop. The circles are all machine pieced. It's not laying very flat on the floor, so it looks a bit distorted.

5  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Denyse Schmidt inspired quilt...lots 'o photos on: February 22, 2008 02:20:38 PM
I got inspired off her website and created this one. No pattern or anything, it was pretty simple and I was able to complete pretty quickly. I like the modern design and simplicity of it.

The pictures are kinda bad because I took the photos at night, but as you can see my cats dig it.

6  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Seeking reccomendations for Millinery supplies on: August 06, 2007 11:13:44 AM
I'm looking for recommendations on good websites for purchasing millinery supplies.

A google search yields quite a few, but I'm curious to know what your experience was. Who do you think has the most selection? Best prices? Best customer service? Etc....

I'm going to create a birdcage veil, so I'm looking for Russian/French netting and feathers.

Thanks in advance!
7  Texas / Texas: Central / Best fabric stores in Austin? on: March 30, 2007 10:16:12 PM
Do tell. Hancock and Joann's are boring me lately.
8  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Screen Printing: Discussion and Questions / Gocco Press PG5 - The manual is in Japanese... on: December 22, 2006 08:02:38 AM
Does anyone know where I can find an English version online. I've looked and can't find one.
9  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / 2 Gallons of Basil! on: October 29, 2006 09:39:29 AM
My stepmother has given me two gallon sized bags full of fresh basil from her garden. The cooler weather in TX had her herbs go wild.

I could make a crapload of pesto, but call me crazy, I'm not a big fan of pesto. What other ideas do you have for sooooo much basil?
