81  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Bunny Bento on: September 26, 2012 07:49:06 AM
Bunny Bento!

This was my girl's lunch today.  A homemade bunny bun, organic bunny crackers, hardboiled egg in a bunny face shape (if you can see it very well), carrots, and sugar free bunny jello.  As I arranged the jello I thought it was all fancy you could see both little bunnies, but now that I look at it in the picture... well...  LOL.  Either way it's fun and the girls both were gathered around me as I made their lunches and made sure that I knew that I should make this lunch again come Easter time.

Bunny Buns

Found a Bunny Buns recipe and thought it was adorable.  Decided those needed to go into a lunch box one day and seeing this challenge made me remember!

I didn't have any orange on hand to make them orange rolls, so just went ahead and made them regular rolls.
Now I made an insanely giant batch and made bunny buns, regular rolls, and two loaves of bread, so if you don't want to be baking all afternoon half or third or whatever this recipe.

3 3/4 cup hot water
4 cups whole wheat flour (I used freshly ground) + about 4 cups all purpose later (or use 100% whole wheat)
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup rolled oats
2 tbsp yeast
1/4 cup gluten flour
1 1/2 tbsp salt

In heavy duty mixing bowl (like a bosch mixer) combine water, wheat flour, butter, sugar, milk, oats.  Mix on low for 4 minutes, then add yeast, gluten flour, and salt.  Gradually add enough all purpose flour until you see the bottom on the bowl when it's mixing.  Knead for 10 minutes on medium until the dough is soft and elastic.  Turn dough onto a lightly oiled counter, and turn a few times.  Cover and allow to rest 1/2 hour.  Then shape loaves/buns and let double in size.  Turn oven to 350* and bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes for rolls or 45 for loaves.  Cool in pan 15 minutes.

Happy Bento-ing!
82  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Katniss Everdeen -Hunger Games- Painting on: August 08, 2012 11:47:50 AM
Painted this being excited for the Hunger Games movie to come out.  Katniss Everdeen, sized 9X12.  Took maybe 5 hours.  I love how it turned out.  Now to figure out where it goes, or what to do with it!

And some in progress photos.

Thanks for looking!
83  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Nimbus 2000 Broom on: August 05, 2012 08:12:06 PM
In the Harry Potter craftalong we had a challenge to make something with a broom.  My family has a movie memorabilia room, so I figure why not an actual broom.

Took a piece of driftwood my hubs found floating in the great salt lake on a trip last year.

Whittled the extra bark, then sanded it

Stained and sealed it.  Then took apart a decorative hand broom that I found at a yard sale (cool!) and hot glued it piece by piece to the broom end.

Painted the Nimbus 2000 seal on it

Finished!  Hard to get a good total shot though

And my precious 8 year old demonstrating it with all her Potter gear

Thanks for looking!  Was fun to see it come together day by day.
84  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Banana-PineBerry Bread on: August 01, 2012 09:48:15 PM
Banana-PineBerry Bread

Had some bananas going bad and thought a banana bread might be in store, but then remembered this challenge and decided it was time to make up my own.  Had some pineapple and raspberries in the fridge too and so Banana-PineBerry Bread was born.

Took my favorite Banana Bread recipe....

Banana Bread
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
tsp baking soda
tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
2 slightly beaten egg whites
1 cup mashed banana
cup sugar
cup oil

Mix all wet ingredients, then mix in dry.  Spray loaf pan with nonstick spray.  Bake at 350* for  45-50 minutes.  Makes 1 loaf.

and changed it up where I thought fit.  Then tripled the recipe as I always like to make a bunch to freeze or give away.  Here's what I came up with...

Banana-PineBerry Bread

3 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
3 eggs - seperated
2 cups mashed banana
1/2 cup crushed pineapple
1/2 cup raspberries
2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
3/4 cup melted butter

Seperate eggs, whip egg whites in one bowl, yolks in your mixing bowl.  In with yolks add banana, pineapple, sugar, and melted butter, mix thoroughly.  Then add both flours, baking powder and soda, cinnamon and salt.  Mix only until incorporated.  Fold whipped egg whites and raspberries in. Pour into 3 greased loaf pans.  Bake at 350* for 45-50 minutes.  Makes 3 loaves.

Ground the whole wheat.

Pureed the pineapple.  You could just use crushed.

All the ingredients ready to mix.

All nicely mixed. It's okay if you see some streaks of egg white.

Eye the batter evenly into the pans.

You can even cook them in a solar oven!

Straight from the oven.

Cut up.

Tada, gorgeous and delicious.
85  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Completed Projects / Hogwarts Crest Stamp on: August 01, 2012 11:41:20 AM
Handcarved stamp of the Hogwarts crest seal.
Got the design from dragonflycurls on etsy.  I love DFC, they were the ones that inspired me to start carving stamps.
Took me a few hours, but was fun to do and I'm happy with how it turned out.

86  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Penny Bracelet on: July 15, 2012 06:05:16 PM
Made a bracelet using pennies.  Domed the pennies into a curved shape, drilled holes, then stranded them together with copper colored findings.  Yes, using pennies in jewelry is okay.  Wink

Wearing.  I love it:

Bracelet went traveling too.  Went to the Golden Spike Museum.

87  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Completed Projects / Bertie Botts Bean Bracelet on: July 04, 2012 12:57:49 PM
Made a Bertie Botts every flavor jelly bean bracelet for the OT Harry Potter swap.  Made completely from polymer clay, not painted.  It looks good enough to eat!  But I'd imagine they'd be a bit crunchy and probably taste like a bertie botts dirt flavor, lol.

I even carved a teeny tiny Botts stamp to give them that authentic look.

Packaged it up nice and hidden among some real jellybeans in the Botts box.

Was fun!  Thanks for looking.
88  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Completed Projects / Mermaid Carved Stamp on: June 07, 2012 07:00:44 AM
I'm new at learning stamp carving.  Been doing it maybe two weeks, and feel more comfortable doing simple things so thought I'd try a challenge.  Lots of details in this one, but I absolutely love how it turned out!  I was worried beyond measure at getting the face right in such small carves, but it looks good enough for me!  This took me around three hours and my neck was killing me leaning over it for that long.  Guess I need to work on my posture while I craft.  Anyway, onto the beauty!

89  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Hunger Games Minature Cornucopia on: May 29, 2012 03:01:48 PM
My family has a movie room and we've been massive movie memorabilia collectors.  We've wanted something Hunger Games and when I saw this Cornucopia at the local thrift store we laughed and figured this should be it.

First we had to paint it a shiny gold instead and I made a bunch of minature goods to fill it with- blanket, sleeping bag, bow and arrows, sword, knife, bag of apples, rope, backpack, first aid kit.

All piled in the cornucopia

And I love my little bag of apples!

Thanks for looking!
And sorry Hunger Games swap partner, this isnt for you!  lol
