I had this idea for awhile for some tatty leather scraps I had.
I had found a tag die at Marshalls for a great price which I thought would make a great size for a bookmark, and had some cute small leaf dies I liked, as well as a tree bark embossing folder, so made some tree bookmarks. I love summer and the fall, so they were inspired for the seasons.
I wet embossed the brown leather with the bark folder, and the moisture and pressure mottled the colour of the leather too, which was perfect for the barky look.
Then I cut some leaf shapes from white leather, and used pigment dies to add the colour in layers to make them look more leafy. After everything was dry, I added eyelets to the top of the tag, and fed some brown ribbon through (my limbs) and sewed the leaves to the end. I decided just a few leaves so as not to make the tassel end too heavy and pull the bookmark out of the book.
I loved how the leather took the die, so cut a couple more white tags to play around with. I added the ink colour, then stamped designs on with Staz on ink, and used an embossing pen to highlight some designs before adding embossing powder and heating it.
I coloured some ribbons for the tassels, and die cut some shrink plastic to thread onto the ends - decorating the plastic with alcohol inks and some stampings before shrinking. I love how intense the colours get when you shrink inked plastic
