21  Getting ready for summer - Thai Ginger Iced Tea... in Recipes and Cooking Tips by Onyxnox on: April 23, 2017 06:12:43 AM
I had this the other day when out for dinner with a friend and had to make it at home...  it's very refreshing and I hope to make more of it for the summer!  I may need to invest in one of those big juice dispensers!

Thai Ginger Iced Tea
serves 6-8

2-4 inch knob of fresh ginger
2 stalks lemongrass
3 cups water
1 cup sugar (more if you like it sweeter)
4-5 rounded tsp black tea
6 cups water
Sliced lemons/limes (optional)

Make a flavoured simple syrup with the sugar, water, lemongrass, and ginger.  Make a pitcher of black tea, and combine with the flavoured syrup, and serve with the lemon/lime slices if desired, on ice.

More details on the blog if anyone is interested....

22  Re: How do you organize your craft supplies??? in Discussion and Questions by Onyxnox on: March 17, 2017 06:00:59 AM
... well... if nothing else, they are colourful and shiny - always a good thing.  I am beading right now, so there is little piles of beads.

I have also made some purchases too (damn sales), so there is a slight build up of new stash that is very distracting!

... so here is what I am working on...

seems reasonable right???

But then, you raise your head and see this....

... I swear, there is an edge of a table in there, and where you see the die cutting machines is actually a separate shelf!

I received from geekgirl1000100 - a lovely dandelion watercolour with alcohol dispersion - a really cool effect.

Thank you!  The flowers seem to glow in my craft room.

CLM - the alcohol inks are good on any non porous surface.  I have used it on acetate, plastic, glass also.  It's how I coloured aluminum tape to make my own dimensional stickers with die cuts - top it with Glossy Accents, or crackle medium and Glossy Accents .  This is a multistage project for something small though - but I loved the look of them.

Mlsocci74 - I love the background colours and the contrast of the dark areas.  How big is that piece?

I received one of mine the other day - almost missed it, somehow the postal person managed to have it jammed quite flat against the side of my mail box and I could not see or feel it, except for the fact that I left the lid up and saw something lighter as I was going through the door later!

... and I got just what this winter weary soul needed, a lot of sunshine!

I love the words circled and the texture of the words hidden behind the colour, and the shading.  I love the contrast of the warm and cool tones - beautiful!

26  Re: Altered Tea Tin Swap Gallery in The Swap Gallery by Onyxnox on: March 04, 2017 04:21:17 AM
I received from our organizer!  Unfortunately Canada Post, and I suspect the cold did not help - there was a bit of damage - a couple of things got worked loose and one poor creature had to enter the local craft hospital for a bit of emergency surgery... but they were small little fixes...

I like the brown and blue elements with the bright pops of red.  I love the use of the natural elements too.

Look at the cute little fairy door...

... and who lives in a fairy house?

This little dear of course - poor thing had a bit of a rough journey and one of her wings got knocked off, and she got knocked off her feet - but she's recovering nicely now, and soon we shall share a thimbleful of tea to help ease her troubled soul.

Thank you for partnering with me and for organizing wdicwg!

Is that a batik piece of fabric behind it or is that decorated paper that you did???  I love the dimensionality  of it!

I think I posted some close ups of the piece on my blog - let me see if I can find the pics.

This is the stamped homemade texture paste - I cannot tell you how much I love this stuff, it dries to such a lovely finish that takes paint/colour so nicely, and when wet can be stamped for such interesting texture.

I used a glass bead gel that I tinted with acrylic paint (a little goes a long way!) to stencil, then when dry, dry brushed on some metallic paint to pick out some more of the texture, with a fine brush.

The base the piece I think is made from vintage road map pieces.

28  Tippler's Chocolate Mousse Cake - gluten-free in Dessert by Onyxnox on: February 26, 2017 03:03:44 PM
I'm making a very traditional Sunday dinner today for Jim - roast beef, mashed potatoes, a token green thing, and dessert.  I was torn between two different types that I thought he would like, and kind of did a mash up...

I'm calling it a Tippler's Chocolate Mousse Cake - linkity to the full recipe/instructions if anyone is interested.  I did not put full bit here because I have a tonne of progress shots on the blog, but here are the ingredients

Tippler's Mousse Cake
serves 10-12

6 eggs, at room temperature
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup sugar
1 cup good quality cocoa powder
1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tsp unflavoured gelatin
2 tbsp cold water
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp cocoa, sifted
1 1/2 cups cold 35% cream
1/2 cup liqueur (Bailey's. Sheridan's, Kahlua)
1 tsp vanilla

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 tsp corn syrup
1/2 tsp butter
1/2 cup 35% cream

It was going to be Bailey's, however it turned out that we drank all the Baileys when we had friends over a couple of weeks ago (*** hic ***).  However, I did have some Sheridan's - a lovely creamy coffee liqueur that I highly recommend if anyone has never tried it.  You can substitute any delicious liqueur - like Kahlua, Amarula, Godivas, or anything like that.

But it has a nice thick flourless chocolate cake, then the mousse layer, and topping of chocolate ganache.

If you don't want to put a boozy ingredient in, you can leave it out - or experiment with a flavoured syrup instead, and cut some of the sugar out.

It is super rich and fudgy - would be fantastic served with coffee or tea.

Yeah - that was a brilliant idea to start the CTCs Smiley

I received from Homerof2 and she sent me one of my favourite things - a little piece of Fall in teeny weeny hoopla form - love it and it is hanging up right now!...

Thank you!

Ooooooh - great gallery!  I love how varied the teeny pieces of art are!

I don't think the decorated envelopes are a big issue - we have been doing it for the Happy Mail Swap for a couple of rounds, and Stampington encourages it for people sending in letters or art work to be published - they often will show some prime examples in their  magazines.  Simon Says Stamp is showing some mail art on their blog too, and how  to do it.  Years ago when I worked at a summer camp for a few years I used to hand make my envelopes from interesting magazine papers too, and there was never an issue.

I made this for Valentines today myself.
