I found an 80s western shirt pattern in Reno, and decided to try it out. Let me tell you pearl snaps are NOT EASY to attach by hand, ha. The first one is made from some Cuba 'souvenir' fabric, and the second is the back of the Gun Club album Fire of Love, which I got fabric printed of. I tried to put darts in the grey one, but it just is hanging kinda weird. Anything to fix that? The fabric is a 50/50 cottonpoly sheet, so it's pretty thin.
Would I be dating myself if I admitted that the second dress is made from the same design of sheets I used to own in the 70's? My parents let me paint that same design on my closet doors, so I had the cool room.
I think I like the dress version better.
I was going to say that I grew up with my parents having those sheets the first one is made of! I actually have pictures of those sheets and blanket!
I LOVE THAT DRESS! Best use of those sheets ever, imo! Great work!
I LOVE when people had the sheets I use when they were kids. I find sheets from my childhood at thrift stores all the time!
Started putting hoods on some of my dresses....just made these two out of some old sheets. I'm sooo into the colors of the first striped one! Think it's probably going to go straight into my closet, ha! I didn't realize how EASY hoods are - I just found a pattern from an old 60's beach cover-up and lined it. And what's better than a dress with a hood? (well, a dress with pockets, but besides that!)
Wow this dress is amazing! How did you do the skirt for this/what is it called? I have a similar shaped store bought dress but I haven't been able to figure out how to make the skirt. I'm brand new to all things sewing as you can probably tell.
the skirt is literally a scarf cut in half and gathered to the bodice. then I added a band of cotton to the bottom, and ironed it like crazy so the two fit together well. let me know if you have any other questions! it's super easy.
Last time I went to Portland, I went to the Bins and found this 80's tablecloth for probably 90 cents! It's a really good burnt orange color with that 80s/90s tribal fish type print on it. I used to hate this stuff, but it's grown on me over the years. I love the whole 80's does 50's style that David Lynch used in Twin Peaks (and lots of his movies), so I tried to make a pattern from a 50's dress I have...it turned out super small in the bust (LAME!) but it's ok because it fit one of my friends perfect so I gave it to her.
practice makes perfect, right? What do you guys think about the lace at the waist?
