I'm sorry I disappeared again my lovelies - I spent most of it in St. Mungo's for reasons we still haven't completely solved (though apparently cortisol is a really important hormone, and your body rebels when it doesn't get enough - WHO KNEW?).  I haven't been able to do much as I've been too ill to even knit or colour, though my magical steroid pills are making it so I can at least sit up for longer periods of time and attempt things!

I have some colouring pages to submit - I think we agreed these were OK as long as they were long projects right?  These pages take me at least 3-4 hours and sometimes longer to finish - longer than my crochet stuff sometimes!

I was finally feeling well enough in the last couple of days of hospitalization to colour again, so I spent quite a few hours filling in this butterly.  It was a super nice present from my supervisor, and I find colouring so satisfying.  Something is very soothing about filling in shapes precisely, blending colours to create a beautiful picture.

Finally a project posting!  Life has been getting away from me!  We have 3 birthdays in March and I have a body that is NOT cooperating with me!

Class: Astronomy
House: Gryffindor
Name:  Eggses!

With Easter last weekend, we decided to dye eggs!  First we coloured them (my 4 yo did the ones that are very well scribbled, I did the neater ones, and my 2 yo decided crayons werent fun lol) with crayons, then we did dip dyeing in food colouring, hot water, and vinegar.  A few we tried doing multiple dips but it didnt work that great as the second dip washed off the first colour set down so no gradients!

Name: Green car hat

My son needed a birthday present, and is OBSESSED with cars.  I had this great slime green from making a dinosaur sweater for my daughter a year ago, and its been used for a few projects since.  The red cars are because his favourite thing right now is the Cars movie, so its just like Lightning McQueen.

Class: Flying
House: Gryffindor
Name: Button booties

Well these wee booties have the cutest daisy buttons ever on them.  Crocheted for my friend who finally got a girl after 3 boys!

Class: Headmistress challenge March
House: Gryffindor
Name: Baked oatmeal

This is not only delicious it goes pretty far, and is great for sending as breakfast to daycare (we need to provide my sons meals since hes celiac).  I used GF oats, added frozen blueberries instead of cranberries, and cut the sugar in half.  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/51013/baked-oatmeal-ii/

Class: Potions
House: Gryffindor
Name: Cherry dress card

For my beautiful sister, a birthday card.  It uses a few different materials and techniques: the dress is origami, the stripes are papercut, and the sash is velvet ribbon.  I think it turned out pretty awesome!

Drive-by again.  Sorry champs I need to make more effort Sad

Class: Charms
House: Gryffindor
Name: Smoothie packs

Ive started taking smoothies to work every day, but we only have a small freezer upstairs.  I decided to make five different containers that contain the frozen and flavouring ingredients, so each day I only have to toss in the fridge stuff.

Each smoothie uses . Cup greek yoghurt, c. milk or milk alternative and 1 tbsp. maple syrup from the fridge.

The packs contain c. fruit Ive been asked to try a low FODMAP diet to help with abdominal pain so this is either blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or a mixture of the two.  Then I added a small handful of greens, either spinach or the bagged smoothie blend from Costco.  Theres a tablespoon of hemp hearts, and then some extra flavouring in some: things like lemon zest, almond or vanilla extract, cinnamon, cocoa.

Its worked fairly well so far, especially because our upstairs freezer is just a tad warmer than the deep freeze, so the berries while still frozen arent the rock hard shards of glass they are in the deep freeze lol.

Name: Wee booties
These booties are definitely for the future I finished them for a co-workers grandson right before he was born.  Theyre a simple bootie pattern from Repeat Crafter Me on Ravelry, and made with good ol Vannas Choice worsted yarn.

Class: HoM
House: Gryffindor
Name: Spring Wreath
Ive always wanted a fun spring wreath, so I decided this year to make one.  I was inspired by Michaels and its rows of inexpensive acrylic yarns.  Its inspired by one made by Repeat Crafter Me, but instead of crocheting a wreath cover I wrapped it with the yarn (honestly, not that much faster but it uses less yarn).  I then crocheted a bunch of flowers, found a bee amigurumi pattern I liked, and since it still looked a little bare I worked out a pattern for some wee ladybugs to add in as well.  Im pretty happy with it!

Jen - I'm so sorry about your fire!  That is awful, and I hope you can get back to your kitchen soon.

More stuff!

Class: Alchemy
House: Gryffindor
Name: Nanaimo Bars
When you make Nanaimo bars, you need to chill everything twice chill the base after placement, and then the custard layer before putting on the chocolate.  These are DELICIOUS, and 100% Canadian (and GF).

1 cup (250 mL) graham cracker crumbs (I used GF animal crackers)
1/2 cup (125 mL) sweetned flaked coconut or shredded coconut
1/3 cup (75 mL) finely chopped walnut halves (I used pecans)
1/4 cup (60 mL) cocoa powder
1/4 cup (60 mL) granulated sugar
1/3 cup (75 mL) butter, melted
1 egg, lightly beaten

1/4 cup (60 mL) butter
2 tbsp (30 mL) custard powder
1/2 tsp (2 mL) vanilla
2 cups (500 mL) icing sugar
2 tbsp (30 mL) milk (I used water as the milk was close to expiry), (approx.)

4 oz (113 g) semisweet chocolate, chopped (I used chocolate chips)
1 tbsp (15 mL) butter

In bowl, stir together graham crumbs, coconut, walnuts, cocoa powder and sugar. Drizzle with butter and egg; stir until combined.

Press crumb mixture into parchment paperlined 9-inch (2.5 L) square metal cake pan. Bake in 350F (180C) oven until firm, about 10 minutes. Let cool in pan on rack.

Filling: In bowl, beat together butter, custard powder and vanilla. Beat in icing sugar alternately with milk until smooth, adding up to 1 tsp (5 mL) more milk if too thick to spread. Spread over cooled base; refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.

Topping: In heatproof bowl over saucepan of hot (not boiling) water, melt chocolate with butter. Spread over filling; refrigerate until almost set, about 30 minutes.

Name: Three Broomsticks - wings

I miss pub food, its so hard to find stuff thats safe and gluten free.  Im guessing the Three Broomsticks sells more than Butterbeer, and that theyd have pub food too.  I made extra mild GF buffalo wings at home.

Baked plain chicken wings at 425F turning partway through until no pink remains. Toss with sauce (below).

Mix together c. Franks red hot, 1/3 c. butter, c. ketchup, and a splash of cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch each of smoked paprika and garlic powder.  Cook over low heat until butter melts and sauce comes together.

Name: Ribbon Wands
The kids love waving these around, particularly running their hands through the ribbons which are all different textures grosgrain, satin, and a rough, iridescent woven one.  We painted dowelling, then I screwed in an eye screw, used a tough split ring, and used a ribbon clasp to hold the ribbon.

Class: Astronomy

Name: Dinosaur Hat
You cant argue this isnt bright!  My daughter is feisty and loves dinosaurs, but specifically requested a pink hat.  Well, mom delivered! The pattern is "Roar" on Ravelry.

Class: Flying

Name: Ornament Wreath

As some of you may know, I love ornament wreaths.  I had to replace my first last year, but then it went missing when we moved house in the Spring.  So, I made another one this year!  It's my favourite yet - the ornament set had lots of different sizes, textures, finishes, and colours.

Challenge: Free the House Elves #1
House: Gryffindor
Name: I want adventure in the great wide somewhere

My BILs girlfriend and close friend of mine LOVES Belle, and looks a lot like her.  Two years ago she made a movie-accurate costume of Belle in her blue dress from the beginning of the movie.  I made her this for Christmas.  I altered a few of the princess amigurumis from my e-book to end up with the right shape, invented an apron, and used the Belle wig cap from the Belle pattern without the little top bun.  She loved it!

Challenge: Free the House Elves #2
House: Gryffindor
Name: Sugar cookies
We made a huge batch of sugar cookies for Christmas, with frosting.  My daughter helped me decorate them!  The icing is a standard buttercream recipe, and the sugar cookies are the soft-frosted from Gluten Free on a Shoestring.

Challenge: Free the House Elves #3
House: Gryffindor
Name: Elsa

My daughter loved the Elsa I made for a friend this fall, so I just had to make her another one for her stocking (she knows Mommy made it and not Santa).  Its the same pattern from the Jana Whitley e-book on Ravelry, with glass floral gems to weigh the bottom down.

Challenge: Free the House Elves #4
House: Gryffindor
Name: Anna

To go with Elsa in the stocking Smiley  I didnt embroider this one so it would be done in time for Christmas, but she didnt seem to mind or notice!

Challenge: Free the House Elves #5
House: Gryffindor
Name: Ariel
SPEW:  Possibly?

I made this Ariel for my friend.  She acted as a surrogate for a friend of hers, and although she had an uneventful pregnancy the week before delivery was fraught with complications.  The baby girl was born healthy and beautiful, but she was sick for quite a while after with a kidney infection, then retained placenta, and PPD and mastitis.  I found out her favourite princess, and made her a little figure to remind her of the little princess she gave to someone else.

Another submission!

Class: Muggle Studies
House: Gryffindor
Name: Tacky Christmas sweater

So it turns out Muggles have a tradition of doing Christmas exchanges and parties while wearing ugly or tacky sweaters!  I found the base sweater at a Value Village quite cheap (it was even knit in two different dyelots so the shoulders are darker than the sleeves!) then decided to embellish it.  I cut the tree out of green felt, then rather laboriously stitched on sequins by hand for ornaments.  I cut out and sequined a star, then sewed them both to the sweater.  I think it came out pretty well!  I plan to add to it each year - maybe plastic lights or a "Merry Christmas" sign.

And Day 7 and 8 advent calendar:

Class: CoMC
House: Gryffindor
Name: Frost pixie snowflakes

My daughter and I decided to make family Christmas cards using snowflakes.  I used a muggle tool known as a hot glue gun to draw snowflakes, and we painted over the cards with blue and turquoise water colours, then set them to dry.  When we came back later, mysterious patterns had appeared!  I investigated more thoroughly, and can announce I have discovered a new species of pixie the frost pixie!
Known to muggles as Jack Frost, frost pixies are similar to Cornish pixies but are instead pale sparkling blue, with sharp ends on the fingers and toes.  This allows them to draw fine details, and they are particularly drawn to cold areas Im assuming they decorated our cards because of the snowflake pictures on them!
-   I actually added a sprinkling of fine table salt to each piece while it was still wet, which causes the paint paint to diffuse and set in exciting ways.  It also adds a bit of shine!

Name: Patronus Afghan

My friends FIL lost the house he built by hand to a fire this fall, and although he has insurance it cant of course replace the sentimental value of his things.  Shes planning on replacing his afghan and all of us who can knit or crochet are donating squares.
This square is part of that afghan that will keep him warm and hopefully bring him some happiness (protective and a necessary emotion to make a patronus).  I get bored knitting garter or stockinette so I decided to mix it up with some stripes (it's the first one in the picture).

Class: Herbology

Name: Spiky Zig-Zag square

Another afghan square, and another garter pattern this time zigzags!  Knitting clearly uses needles, and the pointy pattern is spiky too.  (Last square in the picture)

Class: Potions
House: Gryffindor
Name: Converse Slippers

Another friend asked me to make some slippers for her to give to another one of our friends, and this friend ADORES Converse sneakers!  This pattern has been making the rounds on facebook, so it was a no-brainer to choose.  Due to some problems in translation (the pattern wasnt originally written in English) it was a difficult crochet (Im only moderately experienced) and involved MUCH turning back and forth, ripping, redoing, and working in the round (as you work around the sole).  Hopefully that fulfills the prompt!

AAAAAND Advent calendar Days 4, 5, and 6!

Sorry I got behind on advent ornaments!  I've developed shingles around my right eye so spent the night at a walk-in, where they couldn't work for an hour because the internet network they used went down all over Canada!

Day 2:  BB-8!

Not a project submission!  Just a little Holiday Happiness for you all Smiley  If it's OK, I'm going to post each day which ornament my kids choose to hang on the Advent calendar I made as last semester's NEWT.  You can comment if you want, but it's just to bring you a happy note through the season!   Cheesy  I'm extra excited because my daughter is almost 4, and finally understands Christmas, and how the love and excitement in leading up to it.

My kiddos crazy excited over decorations:

Last minute post sliding in under the wire!!!

Class: NEWT
House: Gryffindor
Name: Advent Calendar

Well, I finally managed to make an Advent calendar like I had been longing for since I was a kid!  A tree, with ornaments to hang for every day.  Most of the ornaments are hand-sewn felt, with a few knitted ones in there as well.  The tree is felt, and the background (aren't those stars lovely?  It's a piece I've had since 2003-4!) is quilting cottons.

I appliqued the snow down, then sewed around the tree, sewed on the buttons (they are ALL different!) and then attached a red corduroy back.

The pockets were a pain in the arse, because I needed them to be loose since many of the ornaments are thick or stuffed.  It's why they have a funny pucker in the centre, which was actually a wee pleat.

I'm SUPER proud of it, and styled the ornaments to be both Christmassy and to fit our family.  I was thinking of posting a picture every day of each ornament as my kids choose one to hang?  That way we can see them all in detail through December!  I'll post two pictures here though so you can verify they ARE in fact done now Smiley
