21  Re: 2016 QuiltAlong, now with prizes! in Quilting: Discussion and Questions by alwaysinmyroom on: March 12, 2017 03:10:41 PM
wow...Mare, that quilt looks quite complicated...I am doing a similar quilt using a triangle ruler and making stars from chevrons....but my big project this year is doing the Gypsy Wife quilt...I bought the booklet and have already started collecting the 60 fabrics I need to just make the background....I am sure it will take me all year..

I admire your rug...I made a small one as a bath mat and it took forever and did hurt my hands!  They are nice and sturdy, though, and cushy under the feet...plus, I have cold tiles and the mat keeps the floor nice and warm...

Bunny...your teeny weeny things are so cute!  You are so clever in thinking how to make such tiny things...I think your brain was meant to do it...it is not a bad addiction to have! ha ha

TSM...it is exciting to see what ideas and plans you are making for your wedding!

ok--since it is tax season, I tend to unwind by coming home and making stuff...it helps a lot!

I had this plain wool bag for years and just never used it much because it was just not "me"...I decided to take a piece of fabric I saved from another project, some glitter ribbon, and a piece of scrap ribbon to gussy it up a bit...now I like it much better and will use it to go to craft fairs!

I also knit a hat for the Syrian refugee project...I will be making mostly men hats for the next few months to be ready to send by fall...this one is made from hand spun yarn from a local farm that has all sorts of sheep, goats, alpaca, etc. They use their scrap fibers to make these mixed fiber yarns. the do not dye these, so the colors are natural and there is still some lanolin in the fibers...soft and smell nice!

I also had scraps of selvage from the baby quilt I made, so to use it up, I made myself a sunglasses case for this summer.  I used linen as well and it is quite padded to protect the glasses:

I also made a mug rug to have something to sit my coffee and GS cookies on this morning...I find that I make a lot of mug rugs that tend to get used for other things, so I never seem to have one when I really need one!

23  Scarf Quilt in Quilting: Completed Projects by alwaysinmyroom on: March 01, 2017 05:08:25 PM
One of our cousins is a breast cancer survivor. Each time she had to have chemo, they gave her a soft knit tube scarf for her head since she lost all of her hair due to the treatments. She sent me her scarves and asked that I make her something to celebrate and remind herself of her battle and the hope and optimism she had during this very challenging time.

She picked out her three favorite scarves and asked that I keep them intact, that is, not chop them into bits. After measuring and drawing and re-drawing many times, I finally got something I liked and could work with. The fabric is a thin, slinky knit.  I cut each of the three tube scarves in half and then picked out 9 more that I thought would blend and cut them into quarters. I had to use iron on knit interfacing on each piece before using it.

After sewing all the pieces together (the sashing is quilting cotton), I used a layer of batting and used polar fleece for the backing. The quilting was simple but very difficult to do...thank goodness for my walking foot!  This part took hours, wrestling that heavy thing!

Anyway, I posted it on FB for all to see, and she loves it!  Can't wait to mail it to her this weekend!  Thanks for looking!

24  Re: 2017 DeStash Along in Craftalongs by alwaysinmyroom on: March 01, 2017 04:56:40 PM
I have been working hard to destash my scraps...I have made a few things from the selvages of my fabric.  I'll use them later to make something else, like a pouch or journal cover...just nice to have around...

A few mug rugs/coasters using selveges as the center and some scrap leftovers

A piece using up the last of my bee fabric...

ok..here are my two big completed projects!

A kewpie doll fabric baby quilt...the "baby" is a year old now, but the size should last her a few more years...it is about 36x45...

Mug rugs made from the selvages of the kewpie doll fabric...can't waste anything!

A cancer head scarf quilt...I will post details on this separately on the quilting board...

Project dump!  Some of these are projects I never posted from the end of 2016 and some are for 2017...just going to post them all here!

My brother made the little wooden case in high school shop 40 years ago.  I backed it with origami paper and then put in my Japanese cat collection. When he saw it, he wanted it, so I gave it to him, cats and all!

Crochet virus shawl...made with two balls of zauerball yarn...love the gradual color changes.

Valentine bunting...fabric covered in glue and cut out.

Valentine coasters.

Felt doll baby with costumes (pattern given to me by Lindy!)

Halloween table runner

Felt needlebook

Banana Pudding Cake
