3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Keepsake Ornaments from Mom's Jewelry on: January 03, 2017 10:28:47 PM
My mom passed away in July of 2016 and while I was helping dad go through her stuff, I discovered she had many Christmas themed pins.  I decided I would make each of her grandchildren a Keepsake Ornament using these pins.  Dad wanted one and then I decided myself and my brother should have one too.  I have not made mine yet because I ran out of time before Christmas.

This collage shows the front and back of each ornament, with the exception of the bottom middle and right, which are the ones for my own sons.  The top left is my dad's and it's quilted.  The next three are rag quilted and then three are in plastic balls.

Everyone loved them and I know they will remember their wife/mom/grammie/nana every year they are hung.

4  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / T-shirt Quilt for Son 2 on: January 03, 2017 11:51:00 AM
I've been planning to make t-shirt quilts for both our sons for a number of years.  Son 2 moved across Canada a few years ago and when we decided to spend Christmas with him this year, I decided to make his quilt so I could deliver it rather than mail it.  I made this plan in October but it wasn't until December 12th that I actually started it ... who starts a quilt like this 10 days before they leave!!  Cheesy  One day before we flew east it was finished.

I had to use our garage to lay it out.  Based on one my mom had made me, I used as much of the front of each shirt that I could and sewed them to a flat sheet:

When that was finished, I laid the top over a heavy flannel sheet and tied the two together rather than sewing it.

He loved it, as did Son 1 - I told him his would be made this year and delivered (thankfully he lives close)
5  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Mini Quilts made in 2016 on: September 25, 2016 09:02:39 PM
I've done 3 swaps this year outside Craftster for Mini Quilts.  In all of them, the creator chose the pattern based on themes and colours the recipient suggested.  None of them could be larger than 24" x 24".

This swap was specifically for rainbow colours:

6  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Mini Quilt Swap on: September 25, 2016 08:41:55 PM
I've done several of these swaps outside Craftster and have enjoyed them so much.

The mini quilt can have any side as small as 12" but a maximum of 24".  The pattern would be makers choice but the recipient would provide colours they like and don't like for guidance.  It needs to be made from 100% cotton and designed to hang (it could have a sleeve or corner pockets.)

I think 1 month is enough time to make and send this size of quilt so that's what I'd expect.  I would like to do this before Christmas so was thinking to have signups from October 10-15 and a mailing deadline of November 17th.

Any interest or questions?
7  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Hazel Hedgehog on: September 15, 2016 06:51:15 PM

Elizabeth Hartman has become one of my favourite quilt designers in the last couple of years.

I made the mini quilt above for a fundraiser auction at our church this spring and the mini below was for a swap I did through Instagram.

It was very hard to part with the top one as I made it in colours I like and then it was purchased as a gag gift  Cry

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted a project on Craftster, even though I've had many finishes.

9  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / My first quilt - yes, you're reading this correctly! on: July 08, 2015 10:48:48 PM
For those that know me, this is probably a confusing subject line as I've posted many quilts already.  But, really, truly, this is my first ever quilt.   Smiley

I was cleaning out above my bedroom closet a few months back and came across this sealed nicely in a dark plastic bag.  I knew what it was but hadn't looked at it for years nor had I taken photos of it finished.

I started this the beginning of 1999, when my cousin and his wife adopted a baby boy.  I had never quilted before but was a good seamstress.  I found a block pattern online, went to the local fabric store to pick out fabric (yikes!) and started sewing.  I knew before I had the top together it was never going to be given away.  I had spent $50 on material, which was huge for us at that time, and more hours than I care to remember.  After I had the top finished, my SIL suggested that I ask my MIL to hand quilt it, which became another reason it would stay with me.

When all was said and done, I tucked it away for the day I would have a grandchild (even though our sons were only 10 and 8 at the time.)  They are both married now but I'm still sort-of-patiently waiting for the day I get to use it.

10  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Oh Canada on: June 28, 2015 08:10:50 PM
Just in time for Canada Day, July 1st, I finished a small wall quilt.  It was heavily inspired by a pattern I saw online but since I could not purchase it locally and it was smaller than I wanted, I made up my own.  This is 10 x 28.

My attraction to this idea was the red and white so I used just one maple leaf

We don't usually use stars to represent Canada but it was another way to use red and white material

a special star to represent crafting

and a heart just because I like hearts
