5351  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Re: 1st time quilter on: January 06, 2007 08:01:03 AM
That pattern is very nice.  Are you using similar colors or something different?

Good luck!

Great job on the elephant square and the stocking!  I love the colors.
5353  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: crochet is killing me! on: January 06, 2007 07:46:45 AM
Oh my, don't give up instead try something a little simpler until you get the hang of it.

Read the pattern carefully to find out if your beginning chain 3 (or whatever amount they say) on each round is supposed to count as your first stitch and, if it is, then be sure you skip the first stitch after you chain - otherwise you're going to be adding a stitch each row.  The 'hole' appearance at the beginning of a round is natural because of the chain and skipping a stitch but, in the end it will look okay.

Also, count lots - I've been crocheting for over 30 years and I still count lots and if it's a pattern I'm not familiar with, I count stitches as I'm crocheting to be sure I'm doing it right.

Make sure you don't put 2 stitches in the same spot when you aren't supposed to - it's a common mistake but will make things difficult - I did it a few days ago but, fortunately, discovered it before I was too far along and only had to frog a little.

The longer you crochet, the easier it will become and you will also learn to fix some mistakes instead of having to rip the project apart  Grin
5354  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: Granny throw on: January 06, 2007 07:23:58 AM
Great throw!

I agree that large granny afghans are easier to make than ones with small squares because there is no sewing together.

I've only make rectangle ones and have never had a wonky center but sure would like to know why it happens with square ones.

Great hat!  What a wonderful idea to make a warm baseball cap.  I bet my sons would even wear this  Grin

Great scarf!  I really like the beads on the tail.  I hope your daughter wears it with pride her entire high school days!

I resemble that remark!!

So, are you saying that if I send it to you, you will model it? ? ?
5358  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: One Tiny Thing ? on: January 05, 2007 05:32:15 PM
what exactly do you do for this swap? just send something small?

This is what the original swap said and what I plan to follow  Grin

The idea is to make one (just one, no more, no less) tiny craft item.  It should be physically small (miniatures are encouraged) and should be something that you can craft with a high level of skill.  Even if it is a fairly simple/easy item for you to make, please embellish or perfect it so that it best represents your skill.  (For example, if you wish to make a coin purse, I encourage you to embroider, add beading, or take other steps to make it a really special piece.)  You will receive only one partner.  You may only send that partner ONE tiny craft - "extras" are not allowed in this swap.
5359  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: Combat Crochet Bag (2 pics) on: January 04, 2007 05:45:09 PM
If you hadn't told us it was crochet, I never would have guessed!  It must be all the knots - I really like it!
5360  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: Quilt Block of the Month Craftalong on: January 04, 2007 05:33:53 PM
Since I already had the sewing machine out to make the December square I thought I would also piece the top together.

This is as far as I'm going now although I do plan to put a border on it and finish it someday but, for now, I am working on a quilt for our bed and another one for my cousins son.

I found it hard to get good pictures - in this shot the blocks are:

Upper row (L to R)  January - April
Middle row (L or R)  May - August
Bottom row (L to R) September - December

This is just a different angle:

So, although I am only going this far for now, it doesn't mean I'm going to quit watching this board.  I can't wait to see the blocks you all have left to make and also to see other finished products.

This has been a very fun craft-a-long and I'm so glad I found it (even though I had to catch up a few months.)  Thanks crazy_bc_jen for organizing this!!!
