Ok, I know what you all are thinking...
Why in the WORLD would anyone want to knit something this warm in the dead heat of summer? Yeah, I know, but I've been dying to make this bonnet for a long time and finally plucked up the courage to knit it. Plus, I just moved away from Florida and knew I would need something to warm my head in the future cold months ahead.
I mean, who cares if it makes me look like I am 12 again... long live bear ears!
The pattern is from Debbie Stoller's "Stitch N Bitch Nation" book, called Russian Winter.
The challenge I first faced was that the yarn the pattern calls is, to my knowledge, discontinued. Poo!
I did find some of this yarn for sale on just one website, and it was a dark hunter green. On a whim, I ordered 4 balls and decided that I had a new dying project. Fun!
I've used KoolAid to dye wool yarn before, so I got the help of Magicpixieknitter (my knitting guru) on what colors to use to make my yarn turn black and a pinch of RIT black dye and vinegar and had a successful result:
After dying all four balls, I began the project and, in a few hours, finished. This is a fast and quick knit and I loved trying this thing on every few hours to see how it was coming along. Of course the family made fun of me, but it was so worth it.
In the end.. I think they all wanted one too!
