31  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Brother Sewing Machine Problems? on: November 29, 2005 08:11:58 AM
I have a Brother XR-31 that I was given as a birthday gift about 5-6 years ago.  I have only used it a few times since then, and everything was going OK for a while, but now that I actually want to learn to sew and do it well, the thing won't work.  The problem is that the top thread isn't picking up the bottom thread.  There aren't any places in my area that can take a look at it to repair it, so I'm wondering if anyone on here might know what's causing this?  I've read a few posts that say Brother is not a good brand to use, and had I known this back when I got it I probably would have exchanged it.  I took the whole thing apart and looked inside, and as far as I can tell everything is OK, but I don't really know what I'm looking for so I could be wrong.

Any suggestions?  Should I just try to get rid of the thing and buy something better?  And what other brands should I consider if this turns out to be something that's not fix-able?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.   Smiley
32  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / V-Neck Sweater on: November 02, 2005 08:48:30 AM
I'm looking for a simple v-neck sweater and was wondering if anyone knows where I could find a free pattern?  I like this pattern:  http://www.magknits.com/chilly04/patterns/donna.htm  but I'm only an A-cup so the 40" bust would be entirely too loose on me.  I basically want something form-fitting and pretty.   Smiley  If all else fails and I can't find one anywhere else I might be able to alter that one slightly to fit my measurements but I've never done that before so it might be kind of tricky.  Any suggestions?
