1  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Sunspots Lace Scarf in Hot! Pink! on: September 02, 2007 02:40:12 PM

I bought this precious skein of Malabrigo laceweight merino in New York and didn't want a yard of it to go to waste. And I've always wanted to try the Sunspots lace pattern from Barbara Walker's Third Treasury (pg. 151-153.) Match made in heaven.

For anyone interested in trying it, I cast on 63 stitches (5 pattern multiples) and did 15 repeats of the 24-row pattern, then continued the first six rows of the 16th repeat and cast off there. To make the tassels, I wrapped yarn width-wise around the Treasury book 20 times, making six tassels for each end of the scarf. I had just enough yarn left over to play Cat's Cradle. Edited to add: on US size 4 needles.
2  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / First Usable Skein on: October 17, 2006 01:53:47 PM
It took an entire evening of dedication but I finally managed a 120 yrd skein of usable 2 ply merino from two Fleece Artist slivers.

As soon as it's dry I'm taking it over to the swatch thread - I can't wait to use it.

I made this:

Based on this:

It's a cashmere tank from Gwen Stefani's line, L.A.M.B. And now it is mine, all mine.

4  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Advice on Drafting on: March 15, 2006 08:09:30 AM
I just got my Louet S17 and while I'm enjoying myself, I'm having some real problems with drafting. At first I thought maybe I'd felted my rovings when I dyed them, so I bought some commercial sliver, pre dyed, and tryed to work with that. It was worse! The problem I'm having is I can't seem to separate the fibres once I'm spinning.

So, I get my long piece of roving, and I split it length-wise, as many times as I can without it breaking up too much. So at this point it's quite thin, but it's still going to spin up as a chunky yarn unless I can manage to control the fibre flow. But it's like a war - I just can't seem to separate the fibres. And if I do, I end up breaking the roving entirely. And since I'm a newb, my joins suck and that makes me even more depressed.

What am I not doing? I do pre-draft a bit, but I've found if I'm any more aggressive than I'm being, I break the rovings. Should I be combing this stuff before I spin?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Small Medium and Large? on: February 10, 2006 02:16:04 PM
I'm trying to resize some patterns, but I can't find a really a solid resource for what measurements make up small, medium or large sizes. I reallly just want to make 3 sizes for now.

Any thought on bust/waist/hip measurements for those three standards of North American clothing stores? Help would be very appreciated.
6  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Judy Jetson Cardigan on: January 23, 2006 10:56:21 AM
I took the leap and made a cardigan with a stuffed collar for my roommate.

Now I need to make one for me because I love it.

10  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Veronica Mars DVD give away on: October 18, 2005 04:39:21 PM
I'm holding my first-ever contest on my blog. Yes, it's a blatant attempt to attract readers, but the prize is good: the entire first season of Veronica Mars on DVD.

Pitch me a TV show about knitting and on November 7th I'll pick the best one and send a resident of Canada or the US this shrink-wrapped, spanking new DVD set.
