The advantage of working with jeans is that I can draw the lines with a ballpoint pen (on the wrong side of the fabric, of course).
First I did a lot of careful measuring. Especially since those jeans legs are not straight. I measured from the seam, using it as a middle line, so I couldn't really go wrong.
The hardest part is sewing the side circles to the body without getting any wrinkles in the (thick) seem. I used pins first, then small stitch basting and then sewing slowly and carefully, while flattening the layers of fabric with the flat side of my scissors.
And I sewed every seem twice, for sturdiness (after the first go I removed the basting thread).

To my surprise my cats just totally ignore them.
