11  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: Stranger Things Hoopla and TM Patch on: March 28, 2017 04:08:02 PM
Oooh! So many awesome Stranger Things crafts! I wish I could have been in the swap now. I absolutely love how you did the Upside Down with the color swap. You did an amazing job Cheesy

We're planning on doing this again before Season Two starts! Looking at the calendar, I would expect sign ups to start on September 11th. This should give enough time for everyone to receive before the new season drops, and not interfere too much with Halloween swaps. (Although I think this would be a perfect Halloween swap!)

I'll probably announce it on this thread and on the original ST swap thread. You can add notifications to one of those threads to get notified if you really want to join us!  Grin
12  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Prayer Flag Swap on: March 28, 2017 12:59:51 PM
It's been almost a year since our last installment of a Prayer Flag Swap (last round was round six I believe). Any interest in a new round?

It was wonderful catching up with the patches that have come in so far. This swap never disappoints!

I'm not sure which ones I like most. The three phases of water was awesome. I wasn't sure what I was going to think of the cross stitch ones; but I really liked all of them. Mind you, I won't be doing any patches with cross stitch myself (drives me batty!) but I like the effect. And I'm impressed with the owl. Made it up as she went along?!?!  Crazy! I couldn't do that. No way.

I loved the River Song patch.  So cool! I really like the door and the rave. The peace signs were pretty nice. The stitching is so neat on the hand.

Since I often like what people make for Wulf, I might just tell my partner for my next swap, "Make something for Wulf, then send it to me."  Grin

And now, per member request, I am sharing the patches I received from my unofficial partner. I'm still stitching and expect to take the full amount of time.

These were from CLM. I asked for patches that were more in line with my non-geeky side and I mentioned two artists. Who can guess the artists she picked?   Wink

You can't tell from the pics really; but they are both larger. The top one is HUGE! I still don't have a plan for my patches. So far I am just enjoying collecting them.  Cheesy

I need a short break from crafting for swaps to get some overdue stuff done, so that works for me. I have been actively designing patches/hoops though. I've got some really fun ones!

I feel like I lost a week.  Between not feeling motivated due to stress, the bf's mom visiting over the weekend, having the boys that same weekend, crap at work, my car being broken into and getting sick...it's bound to be looking up soon, right?. *sigh*

I *did* make some progress on the one patch that is the most detailed. The other patches will take far less time, so I think I am still on track for time.

Exquisite! Your stitches are beautiful. That is A LOT of stitching! And I love the fabric you used.

This is so supposed to be a fun & relaxing swap, easy stitching Smiley. I've never met a TM patch I didn't like, you can't go wrong with whatever you choose to do.

I've sent. I hope my partners will like the new thing I did. I enjoyed the process anyhow Smiley.

No worries. It was sort of like the reaction some people have to being on the ocean with no land in sight. I make so much stuff for other people, I really had to contemplate what my "style" was. And what do I like? I like so many things!  Roll Eyes In the end, it was a good exercise. I took some time to stalk myself, to get a feel for my style. (I really, truly didn't know at that point.) While I don't expect that to stay completely static, it was interesting to see some commonalities and then come to some self-awareness. After I got past that (lasted about 24 hours) it was a matter of going back through my notebooks to see if there was some project I had been wanting to do that I hadn't had a chance to do yet; and I also skimmed some of my Pinterest boards. I think you'll enjoy what I've come up with.

For some reason I didn't set it to get notifications on this thread. Fixed that. This swap always generates a lot of good back and forth. I love hearing about how everyone does theirs. The variation in process is amazing for this particular item.

I had settled on what I was doing for my official partner and had a minor existential crisis over what to do for my unofficial partner last week. But one of the patches for my official partner was something I was going to adapt from a drawing...but I had a minor meltdown over doing that (I need to take a class or something to get over this stupidity). So I switched it up completely. I settled on the topic and the design today. I just need to copy it over to some solvy and decide on fabric. Up to now I have used only stash materials. I might need to go to the store; but I'm going to check my stash again (which is fairly extensive since I hoard fabric) first. I have had the urge to change one of the designs for my unofficial partner; but I am resisting. I am currently comfortable with the timeline and my current progress (half-way done with one badge).

As for process....if my partner has not put any restrictions on size, I decide on the design FIRST. Once I have decided on the design, then I fiddle with size. I try to keep them of a reasonable size (5" square or less). I have changed a design to fit a particular size before. Batting is cut to what I expect the finished size to be. Back/frame fabric is cut to about two inches larger than expected finished size. Front fabric is cut to about an inch larger than expected finished size. I do not completely sew the "pillow" shut at this point. I actually never sew around the pillow. I leave it open and then use the excess fabric to hoop it for easy stitching. At least this is what I have done the last couple of times. Most of the patches I have done require detailed stitching. So much easier to do with hooped fabric.

With this first patch almost completely outline stitched, I am contemplating adding color in a couple different ways. I intend to make a test patch tonight to experiment some. I might even leave it bare.
