1  do you know anything about cloth russian dolls??? (pictures inside) in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Discussion and Questions by caradee on: November 23, 2007 11:46:11 PM
So my mum was lucky enough to take a workshop on making a traditional North russian folk doll.  They are made only by wrapping thread around rags/fabric scraps.  She taught me how, and mentioned there is folklore attached to the doll, based on her breasts and other features.   These dolls were to ward off evil, and bring good fortune.  I am looking for more specific information, but she was never given a name for them beyond "russian folk dolls".

Any good leads?  They are so much fun to make, and I am planning on showing my girlfriends how they are made next weekend... I just wanted to be able to share more of the folklore.

Google is not proving to be very useful for me.  I've been searching it for days.

excuse my mum's poor photography!!

2  Re: Grace Kelly Glamour Wedding Ideas? in Weddings and Bridal Showers by caradee on: May 15, 2007 12:02:55 PM
I can't help but think of pearls.

Perhaps she can wear pearl jewels, but you can craft pearl objects, using fake ones (from a bead store).  I've seen pictures of cake stands and wreaths covered in multiple size pearls.

Or, eons ago I saw a "hollywood glamour" wedding in a magazine.  Everything was black & white, instead of flowers they used oversize leaves as decor.  It was very chic!

3  Re: Invitation question... in Weddings and Bridal Showers by caradee on: April 16, 2007 03:08:12 PM
mine were similar to TheBon's, except that I didn't write names, I numbered each card so as it received I had a fun job of looking up who it belonged to.  The postcards actually all went to my parents' and my mom would email me the card number... then I would email her back and say who it was.
The numbers were listed on a spreadsheet that was alphabetized.  I used it to track addresses, then I added a column for meal choice and wether or not I sent a thank you afterwards.

I filled in the number of seats for each invite.

I don't think I ever got to post pictures!  looking through my photo library I am missing the ones of what RueRue sent me, I'll have to take more.  But here are some of the goodies I sent her.  (I am missing a photo of the apron I made for her)

some criss-cross coasters for a tea party

a "tea party" dress for her daughter

I also sent recipes for tea party foods and treats, a couple cookie cutters and a selection of teas.

Here is the lovely package I received from pSTAT3queen.  She cleary had done some wist stalking because I have been wanting some wrist warmers for a long time, and while not entirely book related these are GORGEOUS!  I wore them out the next evening and got loads of compliments!

Thanks for swapping pSTAT3queen!  I've really enjoyed the swap!

6  Crutches! in Completed Projects by caradee on: March 08, 2007 07:34:43 AM

I broke my ankle on the February ice.  I've been stuck on my sofa for over two weeks, which seems like a good idea, but I'm not aloud to craft from there.  (If I ruined it I may face divorce).  So I was able to decorate my crutches over 2-3 sittings someplce else in my home.  **Here we buy our crutches from the hospital, so no problems with supergluing anything to them, they are mine to keep.**

Your pictures came out much better than the ones I took Squidget!  I love everything, thank you!

the recipe box and cards.  The clip popped of in transport, so I've glued it again I hope it stays because it was VERY clever!

grogeous sewn hot pad and oven mitt.  I especially love the slim thumb, because I find the commercial ones way too bulky and always end up dunking the corners of the big thumb into foods.  They are so soft too!

Some found recipes (the rainbow cookie one looks fun, I'm going to have to find some kids to test it on!) and valentines day cupcake liners, I LOVE CUPCAKES!!  and muffins, so these are great.

Squidget, Thank you again, SO MUCH!!!  I'm sorry to be late with pictures, life has been a bit crazy lately.

Now, let's hope oshun99's package gets to her quickly!

8  Re: Let's see your sewing machine!! in Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions by caradee on: January 25, 2007 10:22:47 PM
I love this thread!  How fun is it to look at sewing machines?

Anyhow, here is my Grandma's old sewing machine, given to me in September.  I love it, the colour is beyond compare!  I have the original manual and a box FULL of feet, all of the fun ones (rolled hems, ruffler.... everything).
I also have a plain old brother basic zigzag machine which comes in super handy for zigzags, and I tend to wind my bobbins on it, as I have both out at once.

Okay, have we ever got a fantastic package to start this thread!!!!
(sorry for the sizing errors, I'll fix it all up in a bit!)

Today all of Chloe's goodies came from krafty_kelly, get your wist buttons ready.  (I am not kidding!)

First, a picture of Chloe checking out all her goodies!

And, time for an itemized list:

Three soft toys, one cute little scotty dog (with an internal bell) and two bones.  The green polka dot bone reverses to black, and the retro flower print reverses to hot pink.  (You can actually see the pink side in the picture above!)  Underneath the toys you can see a detail of the bone shaped mat she crocheted.  It's from an old flannel cloth, bonus points for recycling!!

Kelly sent ME a cute poodle T-shirt (ooh la la!) and some flocked stickers.  (Oh how I love flocking!)

And la piece de resistance, a fantastic crocheted dino sweater!!  This is something I *may* have hinted was on my wist, and I LOVE IT.  seriously.  It fits perfectly and Chloe is so cute in it.  There are two pictures, one of the sweater alone, and one of Chloe, who was not cooperating with the camera!

I apologize for not having a picture of the bone mat.  I was so excited I forgot to get a good shot of it.  (I'll update later so you can see it's fantabulousness in it's entirety.)

Thank you SOOOOO much Kelly, we love it all!

10  Re: faking the look of letterpress? in Weddings and Bridal Showers by caradee on: January 15, 2007 08:24:04 PM
you really can't get the "pressed" look of letterpress without actaully letterpressing, but as a printing alternative we screen printed our invites.  I loved them and it was cheap, about 60$ for paper, envelopes and inks.  I bought larger paper so I could print 4 at a time.  I designed it in photoshop, and there was something I had to do with the layers to get the type to not print pixelated on the laser printer I was using at the time, but I got it all sorted out.

Here is a picture, but it really does no justice, and well, for safety I took out all the personal details, which was pretty much everything.
