1  Youkai Hoop in Needlework: Completed Projects by roler on: Today at 06:23:39 AM
I made this for monkey_girl in the monster swap.  This is Kamikiri, a youkai (Japanese monster) who sneaks up behind people at night in the dark and cuts off their hair without them noticing.  When the victims realize what's happened and go out to check in the morning, they're said to find their hair still bound in a ponytail, just lying on the ground where it was cut.  Strange creature!!

Here are a couple of progress shots:

I almost always binge watch on Netflix while I'm working on a project (a hoop like this goes through many, many episodes), and this time I thought it was appropriate to watch GeGeGe no Kitaro, which is all about various youkai!

I had so much fun with this weirdo's face! XD

My only regret is my choice of background fabric - I like the swirls and their suggestion of mist or darkness, but I feel like the youkai doesn't pop as much as I'd have liked.  All in all though I'm pretty pleased with this guy!

Oh, and I almost forgot!  Here's the image I based this hoop on:

smileyyogini - What an awesome set of monster goodies!!  That's such a gentle interpretation of Nessie that you chose, and I love the Celtic knot pattern on the monsters' heads - so appropriate for Scottish creatures! And the dragon with her yarn hoard is AMAZING!!  Both are just such lovely non-traditional interpretations of potentially scary beasts, and they really make me smile!  I can see why they brightened your day, JoyfulClover!

The package from Mellius01 is fantastic as well!!  I love both of the cross-stitch pieces - the embrace your inner monster and the radiohead bear! They're so precise and well done!  All the patches are so detailed and awesome, and a good variety even from a single crafter!  And awww, cute tsum tsum!  It definitely looks like just the right shape!!

The tea cozy is amazing!!!  The blue fabric for the base is so richly colored and gorgeous, and the applique is bold and beautiful. Smiley  Even the concentric circled quilting is just wonderful.  JoyfulClover, we really must swap again sometime!!  (By the way, I also just started playing FFXIV with my brother!  It's one thing we can do together even on opposite sides of the Pacific, and it's so fun, and I also LOVE the art of the monsters in it! ... Now I want a mossless goobue of my own...)

monkey_girl - I'm SO glad you like your youkai!  I almost went with your other theme of Universal monsters, and had even started working on a design, but then I thought, since you had Japanese monsters on your list and I am like, the one craftster in Japan (I think the only one? lol), I should go ahead and go with that theme! ;P  I'm a huge fan of wacky youkai, and one of my favorite thing about them is even though they often look pretty terrifying, many of them... don't actually do anything that dangerous?  Like, there's one that literally does nothing but take pillows out from under people's heads and move them to under their feet... and another that just follows you down dark streets freaking you out with his footsteps but who will never attack or even touch you.  They all just have really weird hobbies, apparently! ;P

The youkai patches are Otoroshi, Takoynuudo, and Kodama, in the order that you posted them.  Kodama are tree spirits, the same things that look like little white guys with rattling heads in Princess Mononoke... just a different interpretation!

Oh, and here is the image I based that youkai hoop on:

Eeeek, what adorable kitties!  I agree; peeking kitty is my favorite, but they're all so cute, and look great as a set!

I also got my twinchies from Thimbles71! Hooray!  Here they are:

First, three from my animals theme... I know I wasn't the only one to get an octopus or a penguin, and once again I love seeing the variety of styles people come up with!  I looooooooove the beads for the suckers on this cute little octopus's tentacles!  And he looks so happy among those wonderful stitched waves!  Then there's also one from my music theme - and it's even sparkly!!  So great!!

These are really wonderful, Thimbles71!! Thank you so much!! XD

5  Felt Twinchies in Needlework: Completed Projects by roler on: May 14, 2017 12:41:41 AM
Inspired by Becky Margraf's Feltbeasts (which you can check out here; they are SO CUTE!! http://www.creativeboom.com/inspiration/felt-faces-artist-becky-margraf-crafts-100-little-faces-for-100-consecutive-days/), I recently started a Felt Twinchie Swap, and it has been SO MUCH FUN!!  I'm seriously addicted to these little guys now and can't wait to do loads more rounds of this swap!  Here are the eight twinchies I made for this round.

First, for Thimbles71:

And second, for Inselaeffchen:

One thing I thought was kinda funny... When I was making the Harry Potter one, I actually thought it looked really done at this point:

And when I placed the buttons on the eyes just to see the difference, they looked really weird to me.  I showed it to a bunch of people to get their opinions, and the consensus was definitely in favor of adding the buttons, so that's what I went with. I think he looks super cute with the button eyes now that he's done, but honestly this version still looks complete to me as well!
But I did realize, as I was polling people re: buttons or no buttons, that the answers were split entirely along lines of whether or not we watch anime!  I noticed that people who have watched a lot of anime seemed to prefer him without the buttons, while people who didn't preferred him with buttons.  Interesting how cultural influences like that affect our eye for things!

I received my twinchies from Inselaeffchen yesterday!  She chose two of my interests: games, and Studio Ghibli! XD

No-Face in the upper left is from Spirited Away, and the soot sprite in the lower right appears in multiple Ghibli movies.  They're both great!! XD  The soot sprites have always been some of my favorites, too! Smiley
She also made a couple of playing cards (I LOVE Pinochle, and am a pretty big fan of Rummy and Hearts as well), and a Carcassonne game tile!!  I'm really a huge fan of card, board, and other tabletop games, so it's great to have some bright cheerful felt symbols of these! XD

Thanks so much, Inselaeffchen!  They're perfect, and feel really personal too! XD  I'm super excited to collect more so I can put them together and display them!!

pishaw13 - Nice job personalizing your lamp, and I agree; your dog collars are adorable!

SBC - SUPER HUGE CONGRATULATIONS for finishing that beast of a blanket!  It really does look outstanding!!  I know how relieved you are to be done with it too. ;P  Yay!!  Looking forward to your third kitty cross-stitch, too!!

bunny1kenobi - Great handmade mother's day cards!! I'm sure they'll be appreciated! Smiley

FreakieGeekie - Thanks for telling me about Jinx!  That's awesome that you have your own original character! Smiley

9  Woodland Rabbit Hoop in Needlework: Completed Projects by roler on: May 06, 2017 10:48:27 PM
I made this hoop for Noxika in the Woodland Creature & Enchanted Forest Swap. Noxika wanted an original creature that took on parts of its surroundings as part of its body.  I thought about it for a while, and this is what I came up with.

As usual I started with the applique:

Then I worked on embellishing it, like with this maple seed for the ear:

The bunny's fluffy chest turned into a leaf, and its tail into a lotus flower (I guess there's a lake in this enchanted forest!).

I had a lot of fun working on this bunny.  It was definitely a challenge trying to come up with an original creature like this, but I'm really happy with it!

The bead eyes on this penguin sparkle, and real penguins sparkle when they're sleek and wet from the ocean!  By the way, I think these felt twinchies are my new favorite thing to craft, and I'm LOVING the variety showing up in the swap gallery; you should definitely check it out if you've got time!  It'll be filling up even more soon!
