Hello everyone. I'm here again with my second tutorial! This one is for turning an old pair of jeans/pants into a cool looking, backless vest. Please excuse my terrible MSPaint skills. If you have any questions about the diagram below, please let me know!
Okay, here's what you'll need:
--A Sewing Machine (unless you want to do this all by hand)
--Matching Thread (or not, if you want it to look funky and unique)
--Grommets/Eyelets or buttons--your choice!
--A pair of old pants
--Pattern (see below to draft your own!)
Okay, here's how we are going to draft the pattern: http://imageshack.us/a/img820/6741/jbi9.jpg
You'll need to measure your bust, your waist, your hips, your neck width, and the length between each of these, as well as the full length of the vest.
When finished, my drafted pattern looks like this: http://imageshack.us/a/img43/7686/eqqi.jpg
(You'll notice that I have a dart cut out. That's because when I held the pattern up to me, I fitted it to my body a little bit in the bust area. I needed that dart to shape the garment. To do this, hold the pattern up to your body and fold wherever there is extra paper. Later, cut it out to form the dart.)
Next, you'll want to take your old pants:http://imageshack.us/a/img191/2442/czs3.jpg
...And cut them up!
Start by removing the legs right below the crotch, and then remove the seams on one side. This will give you two pieces of fabric for the front, and what was the top of the jeans for the back. It should look like this: http://imageshack.us/a/img443/8741/fd05.jpg
Now, cut out the front pattern x2 we made using the two larger pieces of denim/fabric. This will give you the front of the vest. For the back of the vest, cut the tops of the jeans in half by cutting away the zipper and button portion. This should give you enough room to cut out x2 of the back pattern.
Sew all of the pieces together, leaving the two front pieces open. Now you can either add lining from an old t-shirt or fabric, or just use bias tape to finish the edges.
Add grommets/buttons, and you're done! Your vest should look something like this **NOTE: I haven't added the grommets yet. I want a sort of corset-ish look for the front**: [img width=500 http://imageshack.us/a/img716/1183/w2np.jpg
...and the back:http://imageshack.us/a/img28/1676/6xd3.jpg
Sorry this wasn't such a picture heavy tutorial. My phone didn't save most of the pictures while I was making this! If I make another one, I'll be sure to update the tute.
Happy vest making everyone!
