Previous Gallery: Mini Junk Journals

*** Disclaimer - I will do my best to partner people up according to themes but shipping requirements, allergies and number of participants may make it difficult to come up with perfect partnering!

- This swap is for a junk journal,  You will make your partner a junk journal that is between these sizes:
6 x 9 in <==> 152 x 229 mm
up to
8.5 x 11 in <==> 216 x 279 mm
with a front cover, 20 sheets (that would be 20 fronts, 20 backs, so if you numbered them with page numbers they would number 1-40), and then a back cover.  The sheets can be sewn into signatures or not depending on how you are binding the journal.
- Half the sheets should be embellished.  This could be stamped, or with ribbon/lace, pockets, tags, brads, hanging bookmarks, borders, etc.
- The other half do not need to be embellished but would need to be some sort of decorative or otherwise designed paper (not just plain printing paper), Examples of things you can use: old calendar pages/images, magazine pages, junk mail envelopes, paint chips, paper bags, book pages, playing cards, greeting cards, yellow mailing envelopes, ziploc baggies, postcards or pasteboard packaging that have been gessoed/painted over, gelli printed pages, and other interesting but not bought (i.e. scrapbook) items.    (you CAN use scrapbook type items but it is NOT required)
- Then bind it in some way.  The simplest is punching holes and just using O rings and you can decorate them with ribbons and such so they don't look so plain. But you could do any sort of binding you like.

This swap is just for the book with pages.  You would not do any actual journaling in it.  The recipient would use if for their own purposes.

here are some reference materials.

and some sites with instructions (although the second one looks like she included some actual journal writings which we wouldn't do

A video tutorial series
steps 1 - 3 are mostly about cutting paper and gathering materials.  She uses a lot of store-bought, pre-made stuff.  That is not necessary.  junk journals can be made out of, well junk Smiley  I would check other sites out for types of ephemera other people use.  Probably you could skip steps 1-3 and still have a good idea what she did.
step 1 - about cutting paper and covers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f84PHdXlXlY
step 2 - about gathering embellishments.  she does mostly/exclusively flat decorated journals, but you don't have to be limited to flat items.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIu3hyAw5kY
step 3 - gathering inks and stamps to use
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGOQ0g3RKZE
step 4 - starting to put it all together - flips through her pages and shows where she inked/stamped, added pockets, dictionary pages, etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iUflsbZ_xo
step 5 - final step on putting it together - adding final embellishments and binding. again she keeps it fairly flat. she binds with 0 rings.  and shows how to fancy up the look of the orings

binding tutorial
You can use any binding you want.  The easiest appears to be punching holes and using 0-rings. Here is a link for coptic stitch.  This is where you would have to make "signatures", basically you'd make long pages and fold them in half and then sew them together.

QUESTIONNAIRE TO ANSWER:
Name of swap
Craftster username
Email address
Your real name
Mailing address including the country
Would you be willing to ship to an address outside your own country?
Confirm that are at least 16 years old: (YES/NO)

What allergens are in your house?
What allergies do you have?

*** general note about themes: if you list a very specific theme, it's likely your partner may not have that much in the way of paper-related items/emphemera in that theme.  It's best to keep any themes (if you want a theme) generic and open.

Is there anything/theme you would NOT want to have in your junk journal (colors, types of ephemera, themes, religion, etc)
Is there anything/theme you'd espcially like to see (shabby chic, vintage, steampunk, cutesy, etc)
Is there anything/theme you'd espcially like to make?

*** For partnering purposes I will be looking at shipping preferences and allergies first and foremost.
If at all possible I will take the following questions into consideration:
Keeping in mind the swap is for a journal that is 6x9 inches to 8.5x11 inches, do you have a size preference?
Do you have a preference on what size journal you make?

Anything else you want your partner to know?  pinterest link, etc?

I'm glad that there were an odd number of people in the swap and instead of a round-robin I was greedy and took 2 partners Smiley
Because I have received 2 awesome packages.

JoyfulClover sent a fantastic seahorse sculpture thing.  It came with unpacking instructions and she had used cable ties to fasten the holder to the box.  Clever idea.  I will have to remember that one.

The holder looks like a banana holder painted, and wrapped with a ring binder, nails and wire.  It's decorated with metal flowers.  The seahorse is plushy-like and wrapped with more wire and beads.

I love it so much.  Thanks JoyfulClover!

craftylittlemonkey sent me a great assemblage shrine. I love everything about this.  The whole thing is covered in old patterns and looks like maybe some lace doily and some sort of netting.  I really like the ruler strip on the side.  The spool flowers are really cute and I really like when old gaming pieces are used in artwork.

I think the reason I like this so much - see the little curled shavings?  That and the ruler remind me of my grandpa's workshop. Smiley

The heart looks pretty big here but it's not much more over an 1" big.  Love the color.

Even the back is nicely textured.

Thank you so much craftlylittlemonkey!

DETAILS OF SWAP:

Let's swap pocket letters!

Pocket Letters are where you take a 9 pocket trading card page and fill each pocket with an ATC (although they don't have to be (and usually aren't) as detailed as an ATC) and small goodies tucked in behind the ATCs (stickers, tea bags, a note, washi tape samples, pictures, ephemera, craft supplies, paper clips, beads) and in one pocket, include a letter.
If you don't know where to find 9 pocket pages they are sold where collectible card games are sold such as Walmat or your local game store.  Or Amazon (25 for $5)
http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Pocket-Page-Protectors/dp/B005HIOVOG

Each pocket can be a different theme or you can have one theme across all 9 pockets

This should be a low cost swap if you keep to all flat items and embellishments and should fit in an
A4 envelope (4 1/4" x 6 1/4") (you would have to fold it but that should not be an issue) or similar size.  I have heard that they should fit into a business sized envelope (4 1/8" x 9 1/2"). Just make sure that it is packaged well and the corners won't tear the envelope! Taping the edges of the envelope might be a good idea.

You can choose 1 or 2 partners.

Check into the swap thread every week!
And thank your partner when you receive!

QUESTIONNAIRE:

What are your favorite colors:
What colors do you dislike:
List themes you do NOT want to receive:
What (if anything) would you NOT want to receive as an extra/goodie in the pockets behind the ATCs?

Any allergens in your home (pets, smoke, pollen)?
Do you have any allergies?
Pinterest link (to give your partner an idea of what you like)

Anything else youd like to tell the organizer or partner NOT listed in the questionnaire?

IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE, REMEMBER TO SEND YOUR INFO TO ORGANIZER VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE AND NOT TO REPLY WITH IT HERE.

9  Re: Paper and Mixed Media Craft-Along in Craftalongs by geekgirl1000100 on: March 17, 2017 10:15:26 AM
I made this mixed media piece recently.
Lots going on - gesso, texture paste, mod podge, lace, ribbon, book pages, die cuts, doilies, lots of paint, white gel pen.
I was pretty happy with it and it was a lot of fun to make.

Like this

and this

So I recently made my own piece.  Lots going on - gesso, texture paste, mod podge, lace, ribbon, book pages, die cuts, doilies, lots of paint, white gel pen.
I was pretty happy with it and it was a lot of fun to make.
