Drink bottles make great gift containers. You can cut a U shape into the bottle and make a "'button with hook" type closure. (or just cover the hole with a new label) 2 lt. bottles are my favorite. Remove the labels and create your own personalized label- fill the bottle with goodies- easy as pie and everyone has liked them so far. For my daughters teacher, we are filling a bottle with pens, pencils, dry erase markers, crayons, erasers, etc. and giving this to her during "teacher appreciation week".

Key chains would be cute... I also really love the ideas of making a coin purse or using packing / duct tape to recreate a wallet. Repurposing an item back into it's original purpose is great!

We use T-shirt scraps to make rag dolls. If you don't have time for a new project right now, offer them to a neighbor with small children or a local child care program. I don't have any photos or instructions handy but we found instructions online after searching "Amish rag doll".
