This is the art quilt I made for zombiekilla
in the mini art quilt swap
. (Go there and look at all the awesomeness! This swap ROCKED!)
In this swap we listed five themes for our partners to choose from. I was really excited about two of her themes- Trees and Zombies/horror. (she made me the very cool Can Can Dancer
After a bit of thinking I realized that almost every zombie movie ever has a scary forest or swap scene, so I could combine the two themes!
First I used black, red, and white fabrics that I thought looked a little gory to make the base quilt. Then I made the zombie appliques. Sadly they lost a lot of zombie like detail (shredded clothes and missing flesh) when I stitched them on.
I did echo style quilting around the zombies because I wanted there to be a little more movement in the quilt.
Then I embroidered two tree trunks and added them to the sides. This is when I realized that I had messed up the placement of the zombies and that the trees would cover them up a little. I love the way it came out in the end, but this discovery caused me much agony during creation. This is also when my machine died so I hand sewed from here out!
After lightly stuffing the tree trunks, came a few leaves, then binding, then more leaves and the vine.
Lastly I added another leaf to the back as a quilt tag!
Oh, and one last shot of the creepy backing fabric.
I'm a little bummed out by how the pictures came out- I didn't use a tripod so they're pretty blurry. There's a lot of great stitching details that don't show up. I'll do better with the pics next time!
What do you think of it?
