11  Finished Mario Quilt-My first (and maybe last) quilt! *PIC HEAVY* in Quilting: Completed Projects by cheerupem0kidx0x on: December 26, 2010 11:22:01 PM
Ive been working on this for about 6 months and finished it just in time to give it to my 8 year old son for Christmas. Smiley Im redoing his room in nintendo theme and this is the big project Ive been working on. We are both huge mario fans, so I did have a lot of fun making it to. But man I never realized how much work went into a quilt!! I ended up taking the easy way out and tied it instead of hand or machine quilting like I had originally planned..I also learned some valuable quilting tips the hard way such as old tshirt material is not the best idea if you dont want the squares all stretchy and hard to work with, nor is jean material or double layer fleece a good idea when you have to sew it together in many rows of 1 inch squares...also though you are meticulously measuring and cutting these tiny squares, somehow the finished blocks can end up to be inches different in size and not a square at all really lol. But it all turned out okay in the end. Finished size is around 90"x70"ish, a little bigger than queen size. I used 2 inch squares for the mario in the middle and 1 inch squares for all the other blocks. Im really happy with how it turned out! I had planned on making a Harry Potter quilt for myself next but I may need a longggg break before I start on it lol.

My dad and me holding it up, my son is in front

All pinned and almost finished

blocks hanging on the wall as i was finishing them. i also made the boo hanging there, the bob-omb lamp and the mario name art! i have pics of all the projects in a different thread under the home sweet home forum

Thanks! Merry Christmas to you too  Smiley

I forget the exact finished measurements I wanna say it was about 90" tall by 70" wide....it is a little bigger than queen bed size. Heres a pic of us holding it up and thats my son (the one I made it for) in front of it.

I FINALLY FINISHED THE QUILT!! YAYYYY lol  Grin it took me about 6 months and the past 4 days have been pretty much nonstop working on it. My hand is so sore from doing all the ties and my foot hurts from pressing the sewing pedal lmao. But its done! Ill get some good pics with my camera later, these are from my phone

laying it out to pin the edges after I put all the ties in

with the edges pinned, pretty much what it looks like finished

Thanks guys! The contact paper idea sounds really cool too I might have to try that when I get some time away from this quilt!! I am trying to finish it up by christmas and I was moving along pretty good until tonight I get down to the last border block (or whatever its called lol Im not good with quilting terminology) and realize I am about 10x19in short on fabric!!! UGHHHHHH and my car is in the shop so Ill have to wait for the hubby to get off and take me back to Joanns tomorrow. So it may not be entirely finished by christmas morning but maybe itll at least be close enough to wrap up and have my son open it! I have decided to tie it off instead of machine quilting like I originally planned...And let me just say I have a newfound respect for quilters cause this crap is HARD! I thought the worst part was gonna be cutting out all the tiny blocks and sewing them together but that was nothing compared to trying to piece them all together and finding out somehow they are slightly different sizes and not entirely square blocks and all that fun stuff...But I think itll turn out okay, I know my 8 year old isnt going to notice if the blocks arent a perfect square lol...Heres some pics..Sorry for crappy quality, the are cell phone pics.

putting the border blocks (the blue ones) in between all the characters...I got down to the one between the star and goomba and ran short on fabric  Angry

thanks  Grin

Heres a few more pics...the room so far, still not very far done. We cant paint the walls cause we are renting  Sad so I am still trying to decide what I can do instead. I just finished the 5th quilt block (out of eight) and then one I am working on now is a fire flower. I can not wait to get this quilt done!!! It wouldnt be so bad if I could work on it regularly and get it done fast, but I feel like Ive just been doing it forever now and I am ready to move on to other projects! I got the batting and the back piece of fabric yesterday, I am interested to see how it will turn out because I have never quilted before. I am nervous about putting it all together. Im also going to do an old school controller pillow. The trash can I started doing in an earlier post turned out horrible and I was debating trying to put paper mache over the trash can and then paint it. The paint just wasnt adhering well to the plastic on the trash can...But that is another day someday after I finish this damn quilt lol.

baby yoshi block

the room so far, I didnt make the curtains, I found them at walmart.

name art hung up over the bed

bobomb lamp needs a new shade...3 of the small blocks and the middle block hung up for now. figured they might as well be decorative until I can get them all done! I did the paper mache boo that is hanging up too, cant remember if I posted pics of that before or not.

This didn't turn out exactly how I wanted it but it was still cute! I just ran out of time to perfect it Sad

She wouldnt keep the crown on! And I know princess peach doesnt wear black boots lol but she wouldnt let me change them so thats what this princess wore Smiley

trying it on for the first time, this was the original crown which i liked better but it wouldnt stay on at all.

17  Candy Corn Tutu w/ Leg warmers & Bow in Halloween Costumes by cheerupem0kidx0x on: November 04, 2010 09:06:54 PM
I made this for my 15 month old daughter, Chloe. It is a candy corn tutu dress. It is actually 2 pieces, the top "halter" dress has white and yellow tulle layered and a candy corn embellishment I made with ribbon. The bottom skirt is orange tulle. The leg warmers were a pair of womens knee high socks that I turned into baby leg warmers. And then the hair bow is just a yellow, orange, and white tulle puff with another candy corn ribbon embellishment. I think it turned out really cute! We got a lot of compliments when we were out trick or treating.

18  Re: Mario Bed Quilt in Quilting: Discussion and Questions by cheerupem0kidx0x on: October 11, 2010 06:20:13 PM
Feel free to use it if it helps, I have no problem with that! I basically did the same thing when I started making it. I found this tutorial that tells you how to do the mario block. http://www.instructables.com/id/Mario-Quilt-Block/
And the smaller blocks I just googled "8 bit goomba" "8 bit mario star" etc and found pics to count the number of pixels (squares) to make my design. The mario block I did with 2 1/2 in squares (2 inches after they are sewed) and the smaller blocks are with 1 1/2 in (1in after sewing) squares. Heres some more that Ive done, I was originally planning 8 but Im just now finishing up the 4th so I may just stick to 4 lol. I started back in school and I dont have much sewing time now. I really hope to get it finished for him by christmas!

19  Candy Corn Tutu Dress & Leg Warmers in Halloween Costumes by cheerupem0kidx0x on: October 11, 2010 06:06:56 PM
I made this for my daughter the other day. Im not sure if shes going to wear it trick or treating yet because Im also working on a princess peach tutu dress and havent decided which one to use yet. Ill post pics of that when its done too Smiley This one is a tutu skirt made of orange and a tutu halter dress with the white and yellow layered. I wish the yellow had been a little brighter. I made the candy corn on the front out of grosgrain ribbon and made a matching hair bow the same way. The leg warmers were knee high socks that I turned into leg warmers.
