Oh my gosh, I want that pig!

Nice towels and scarf! Question about the towels: Does the fabric trim interfere with use? Like, does it bunch up when you use it to wipe your hands?

Brief Description: If you couldn't tell from my username, I'm proud that I'm part Mexican. While a little of the culture remains in my family, a lot of it has been lost over the subsequent generations since my great-grandparents came here, especially since my dad isn't much of a talker. However, he is known to let some things out when offered Mexican food. One of my co-workers supplied me with her recipe for chicken tamales using store-bought rotisserie chicken. Sounded like a good way to get started making tamales! Things happened, however, and, while not an utter failure, they didn't truly turn out. And I'm not talking about the fact that I used corn husks instead of banana leaves. Neither my co-worker nor I care enough to scour the area for a possible pack of banana leaves. The dough was the culprit. They are good, though! Here's one of 3 batches freshly steamed:

Wow, crocheted numbers? I didn't know that was possible!

Those ears turned out fabulously! I love the notebook cover and the necklace is lovely.

I received from my partner across the pond! I really like shopping totes that fold up small (so handy!) and we both like Chuck (a TV show), so she made me ...

a shopping tote that folds up small and has the Nerd Herd logo from Chuck on it and its little bag! Cool

The tote, the tote's tote and the Hufflepuff scarf bookmark are all fantastic and loved and so well done.

Thank you so much, Inselaeffchen!

Brief Description: I went as Kaylee from Firefly this Halloween. I made the pattern for the jumpsuit, sewed it, made the patches, and painted a nylon parasol. Counting up the number of TV episodes and movies I watched while making this (and fixing mistakes), I'd say it was at least 45 hours of crafting. That's longer than all of Firefly! Cry As always, I learned a lot and became a better seamstress. For example, I learned how to sew this kind of zipper, among other things.

Project Name: 5 years of Halloween collage
Project Link:  see below
Brief Description: I set myself the challenge of making a costume a year for 5 years to help me become better at my hobby and give myself permission to sew just because I wanted to. I've always loved costumes. I started with Little Red Riding Hood, then a carrier pigeon, circus performer, Agent Carter, and, finally, Kaylee. I learned so much from each. I still have much to learn and even more to master, but I'm really glad I did this! I even made this collage. That counts as photo editing, right?

6  Kaylee: Shiny. in Halloween Costumes by Calabaza on: November 05, 2016 03:58:03 PM
While discussing Halloween costumes with a friend, she suggested I go as Kaylee from the show Firefly. The idea also had been in the back of my mind for a bit, so I decided to give it a try.

First, I made a pattern for a jumpsuit. (Patterns rarely fit me without so much alteration that it isn't just easier to draft my own.) Then came sewing, making patches, and painting a nylon parasol.

It came together in time for the annual come-in-costume discount day at the zoo, which, it turned out, had a good backdrop for a few pictures.

The parasol doubled as a perfectly functional umbrella! It couldn't protect the bottom of the jumpsuit from a few puddles, however Smiley

It was a great start to the Halloween festivities. Plus, I got several compliments on my costume! It was kind of cool.

Herere some of the pattern pieces.

A shot of my mock-up. It and the final jumpsuit were both made from thrifted sheets.

Bear patch close-up:

A lady at my aunt's annual Halloween party wanted a picture to text to another browncoat.

I wore it on Halloween itself to get a $3 burrito at Chipotle (delicious! They do it every Halloween.)

As always, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot from my Halloween costume.

Thanks so much for looking!

I like how just the front gathers on that dress. Good choice of design! Are those beards or trim on the sleeve or skirt?

Project Name: Deerstalker AKA Sherlock hat
Project Link: (if available)
Brief Description: I made this hat courtesy of this awesome pattern. It went very smoothly! The only real trouble I had was getting it to print out the right size. I ended up saving the image to my computer and then telling it to print out at 100%, as a commenter suggested. I also used firm, sew-in interfacing in place of buckram because it's what I had around. I made the hat for my co-worker to wear volunteering at our school's Halloween event.

9  Attack of the Killer Rabbit: Death Awaits in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by Calabaza on: September 16, 2016 02:55:57 PM
The rabbit of Monty Python fame now staring in its own film! Or, at least, pillow that looks like it might be based on a film poster:

I played around with images courtesy of the Internet and played around with them and fonts in a word processor to make this. I kept the background gray so I wouldn't use up all my ink.

A trip to the photocopy place made it big enough for pillow purposes.

Next up was tracing the design onto freezer paper to iron on over an interfaced piece of black fabric so I could cut out the design and sew it over pieces of interfaced white and red fabric:

The back features a deep lapped blind hemmed zipper and some blood seeping through by the flangs:

Gorgeous artwork and what an intriguing flower!

The shibori is beautiful as is the metal stamped jewelry.

Ha, I love that shark and the mouse and your take on fox pillows. He looks so comfy.

The embroidered towels look absolutely professional. I will be clicking that link!

But first, my FANTASTIC goodies from Smeddley:

An entire Doctor Who collection! There's a super long scarf. It's 2x+ as tall as me! Then there's fingerless mitts, which I love wearing over those cheap $1 gloves to keep my hands warmer but still able to use my fingers. And last but certainly not least, there is a stellar beanie with a bow on the side. A nod to another Doctor? I'm thinking yes.

Awesome, Smeddley! Thank you so much for everything!
