Challenge: PS#4 - Kaos with Keys
Team: The Witches of East Hogsmeade (Mistress Jennie & FiberAlchemist)
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Santa Maria - for Extra Credit!
Project Link: N/A
Brief Description: My first grader had an extra credit assignment to make one of Christopher Columbus' ships as a way to learn more about exploration. After discussing several ideas together, kiddo decided on a cardboard-based design. I snagged some boxes out of the rubbish pile at the office - saving them from certain doom - to serve as the base for his project. Kiddo chose the ship he wanted to recreate and found an image to mimic online. He drew the sides of the ship onto the cardboard and I cut it out. Kiddo thought a plank "poop deck" was essential, so we used craft sticks to connect the ship's sides, threaded through "slits" I cut into the cardboard sides. Some tape for the bottom and a good coat of paint finished the base. Kiddo made the sails himself and attached them to some bamboo sticks with tape. He's pretty proud of it, and I'm pretty proud of him!

And this is what I got when I asked him to look "proud":

In the spirit of full disclosure, here are what my scraps look like completely washed and dried:

The purple and yellow were dyes I mixed up that day, which is why I think I got more color there. The blues I mixed up weeks ago, and I got a lot of fading.

And completely by coincidence, there's a natural dye workshop happening in a couple weeks a bit south of me - I'm seriously considering signing up!

148  Yarn Wrapped Necklace with Wood-burned Beads in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Abbeeroad on: October 06, 2015 07:08:58 AM
I made this necklace with some cotton yarn I dyed and some plain wooden beads enhanced with a wood-burning pen.

I wrapped some beading cord with the dyed yarn, making loops at each end for clasp attachment and stringing on some wooden beads. I really love how it came out and will definitely be playing around with this technique more - I have plenty of yarn left!

Here's a close up of the beads:

And a wearing pic for fun and size ref:

149  Wood Prayer Flags in Completed Projects by Abbeeroad on: October 06, 2015 06:56:32 AM
I've been kind of obsessed with my wood-burner lately - I'm seeing every wooden surface as something I can potentially "enhance." Wink

These little guys came out of an afternoon of experimenting with some cheap wooden pieces I picked up at Michaels, my burner (of course), watercolors and stamps, and some twine.

I burned them first, then strategically applied some watercolor paints and stamped the messages in the center. Each flag got three coats with a clear spray sealant and was attached to twine for hanging!

Project Name: LWI-dyed scraps
Project Page Link: N/A
Brief Description: If dyeing is second-nature to me - low water immersion dyeing is 1st, haha. I threw some scrap fabric into a cup with lots of dye and here are my results - they will pop up in future projects, I'm sure.

Class: History of Magic
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Dyed Yarn Experiment
Project Page Link: N/A
Brief Description: I bought some cotton yarn for a project a long time ago that never panned out. So I decided to take a risk and experiment with dyeing it. The colors definitely muddied a bit, so I'm still on the fence about the success of this one...

Class: Muggle Studies
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Mixed-media Necklace
Project Page Link: N/A
Brief Description: I heard that muggles wear yarn, but I wasn't sure exactly how. Certainly not as jumpers like wizards do, right? So I played around with the yarn I dyed to make a muggle clothing accessory. I have the perfect robes to wear this with...Wink
