4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: IYP 28 - Winter Wing Ding GALLERY!! on: February 08, 2016 08:10:51 PM
Eeeeeeee!!!!!!! Check out the awesome that arrived at my door today! Pottermouth has outdone herself again with a beautifully embroidered rendition of Hagrid's Hut. I think it's free-form machine embroidery? So much detail. I love it!

I suspect her sense of proportion is a bit off though ... we agreed to a small craft swap & this embroidery piece is so much more! Thanks for spoiling me Pottermouth! There was also a lovely HP card & Hedwig bumper sticker in my package.

Thanks for the compliments!

Ludi's needlework is always phenomenal. I find myself studying her work trying to figure out how on earth she does it!

Is 'Tale of the Three Brothers' a wood burned piece?

It's actually acrylic paint on a wood section. I'm not sure I trust myself with a wood burner - I'd burn something for sure! Paint is so much more forgiving.

I received a fabulous package from Ludi today! Anyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with hedgehogs (we've owned 10). So I was in love the moment I saw this little cutie:

It's hard to tell in the pic, but it's actually stumpwork. The hedgie's nose and muzzle are raised up from the embroidery base. The piece measures approximately 3 & 1/2 inches across. So wee & perfect!

Thanks for a fabulous swap, Ludi!
7  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Completed Projects / Free Hugs! on: January 24, 2016 08:38:42 PM
Sheepblue and I had a private swap AGES ago (as in almost a year) and I'm just now getting around to posting pics of the piece I made for her.

Emma likes the movie Aliens and has as warped a sense of humor as I do, so I when this idea popped into my head, I knew it would be perfect.

I created a tiny lemonade-stand with the words "Free Hugs" painted in red at the top. Then I made a facehugger and an unhatched pod to accompany it. The stand was made with craft sticks, wood stain and glue. The facehugger and pod are both polymer clay with paint added for detail.

The bubbles are cut vellum, as is the top layer of the axolotl. That stuff curls when you add glue so there was a lot of cursing while I put the piece together. I've got the axolotl and some of the bubbles elevated using little sections of black foam. Or in the case of a couple of the bubbles, some clear glass beads.

I've added a topic under the paper craft board with more pics and details:

Thanks for all the lovely compliments! Both the painting and axolotl were so fun to make.

I was lucky enough to partner up with Ludi in the IYP 28 swap. She has a fabulous cabinet of curiosities room and thus I decided what she really needed was a small Axolotl in a tank to add to her collection. The "tank" is a clear 5x7" photo frame that's approximately 1" deep.

The finished piece is 95% paper, with a bit of paint added as well. The plants, pebbles, bubbles and the axolotl itself are all cut from paper. I painted details onto the plants and added highlights to the bubbles with white paint. The axolotl's pink spots & the white highlights in its eyes are also paint. Other than that, everything is layered paper.

I used black foam cut to varying lengths to raise up the axolotl and some of the bubbles from the background to give the piece more dimensionality. I also used clear glass beads behind a few of the bubbles to raise them up and give them a different appearance. The overall effect is a charming little creature swimming in his tank and ready for his new home.

10  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / The First Brother's Tale on: January 24, 2016 07:23:33 PM
I created a small wall hanging/ornament for Pottermouth in the IYP 28 swap. We both love Harry Potter and we're both fairly obsessed with our Harry Potter Christmas trees. As it's already past Christmas, however, I wanted to make something that she could use as either an ornament or regular art depending on her fancy.

The scene is from THE TALE OF THE THREE BROTHERS by Beedle The Bard, a book featured rather heavily in the last Harry Potter novel. It depicts the first brother being given the Elder Wand by death.

I knew the moment I had the idea that I wanted to paint it on a tree limb cross-section so it'd have a lovely bark grain on the outer edges.

Clearly the section I chose was always meant to have this picture painted on it because it had a dark black splotch, similar to the one on the opposite side pictured below, in the middle of the wood and in roughly the shape of death's skull. I decided to go with it rather than finding a different cross-section.
