1  Mothers Day Table Setting in Party Planning by CubanMother on: May 17, 2017 01:36:08 PM
Our home is the party location for all the celebrations for our family and while my husband insists that we use real cutlery (he hates plastic disposable cutlery) I demand disposable paper plates and cups.
To dress up the table while using disposable paper plates and plastic table cover and cups, I take a little time to add a few crafty touches.

For this Mothers Day celebration I added a flower print fabric runner.
I decorated the plastic cups with washi tape

I made a cake box centerpiece

Two vases made out of tin cans wrapped in rose scented drawer liners.

2  Re: Cubanitas Cascarones in Easter by CubanMother on: April 22, 2017 07:57:50 PM
Thank you rackycoo for featuring my Cubanitas Cascarones on the Featured Projects page.

My granddaughters loved the Cubanitas Cascarones so much that each girl saved 1 Cascaron to keep as a souvenir.

Each holiday, the girls and I make a craft together, this Easter we made Rice Krispie Eggs.

3  Cubanitas Cascarones in Easter by CubanMother on: April 09, 2017 02:03:35 PM
In the historical colonial zone of Old Havana there are some female flower sellers wearing bright eye catching traditional dresses for tourists to take pictures of them or with them.
The ladies are licensed state workers and the places they can work and the number of ladies are controlled by the Old Havana Tourism Office (notice their ID badges)
Many tourists assume that these dresses are the traditional national Cuban dress, but they are not. These dresses and turbans are the authentic colonial period dress style of working women, such as flower, candy or fruit sellers, and were my inspiration for this years Cascarones (Confetti Eggs).

Cubanitas Cascarones

Once again, because I only make 2 dozen Cascarones (one dozen for each of my granddaughters) I like to make them with a theme. The eggs turbans are made of red crepe paper with red, purple, pink, hot pink and orange mini paper roses.

4  Nurses & Nursing Assistants gifts in Winter Holidays by CubanMother on: December 23, 2016 02:08:00 PM
My father resides in a nursing home for almost two years now. I like to give a little token of thanks and good wishes at Christmas to his nurses and nursing assistants that take care of him everyday with kindness and lots of patience.

This Christmas I made 15 little gift sets with an apron, a cookie recipe, a cookie cutter, a matching kitchen towel and potholder in two color, red and green with a little jar of homemade guava marmalade.

5  Homemade Guava Marmalade gifts. in Winter Holidays by CubanMother on: December 22, 2016 07:45:41 AM
Guava is "the fruit" for Cubans. We like everything guava flavor, juice, shakes, cakes, pastries, marinade sauce, paste, marmalade.... so, a homemade gift from me must be guava flavor   Wink

Collected and sterilized 2 oz baby food jars (Thanks to a member of my local FreeCycle board)

Making the Marmalade (These pictures are from another time I made guava marmalade, no time for pictures during the cooking Christmas season).

While I designed my own label for the marmalade I just printed a free food gift tag from the internet.

Pretty and yummy 24 little jars of Guava Marmalade.

7  Rustic Themed Wedding in Weddings and Bridal Showers by CubanMother on: October 20, 2016 08:10:41 AM
My son got married on September 23.

It was a beautiful, relax and fun wedding. The bride chose a rustic fall theme for the reception, very appropriate for the venue, a historic park.
The bride was beautiful and the groom very handsome, they are great people and I am a very lucky and happy moher and mother in law.

I had lots of fun crafting all the decorations for the wedding and more important, I make sure to get the bride's approval of all my ideas.
I suggested a dessert table because the bride wanted a cupcake tower instead of a traditional cake, she loved the idea and it came out beautifully!

My son loves robots

First I made the cake net with a lace trim edge and a burlap bow. My beige crochet tablecloth was perfect in size and color for the table. The bride's grandparents bought her the rustic cupcake tower. I made pia colada mini bundt cakes, cookie trays, a meringue basket; my daughter made a pumpkin pie and an apple pie. The cupcakes and mini cake were made by the bride's friend. I bought the lace cupcake wrappers and Love is Sweet sign on eBay. The big Love sign was a thrift store find that I painted from red to white. My new daughter in law chose to display pictures of the bride and groom's parents cutting their wedding cake at the dessert table (my husband and I are the picture on the left 38 years ago).

I made 21 burlap runners  with  lace edging for 18 guest tables, one sweetheart table, one guest book table and one gift table.

Each guest table had  decorated mason jars with baby breath flowers and metal pumpkins that the bride bought, pine cones and fall leaves.

I made the tall vases out of  2 Pirouline cans, wrapped in twine and embellished with lace trim and pearl string.

The vases for the sweetheart table had a wire edge white taffeta ribbon printed with hearts and the Mr & Mrs sign matched the sign form the desert table.

The bride made the seating chart.

My other wedding crafts were:
Rustic wood signs. I freehand wrote the signs because I am really bad at using stencils.

Small Wood Crates, one with the bride and groom's initials and one with a bride and groom chairs, one with a bride and groom figurine and photo props.

Picture Frame with the new Mr. & Mrs. last name initial, a small wood decorate box fill with wood engraved love hearts and a white basket with bubble sticks for the send off.

Handmade Fans

And finally, bathroom baskets.

8   Eggshell Cups with Chocolate Pudding in Easter by CubanMother on: March 27, 2016 08:09:20 AM
I made these eggshell cups for my family. I decorated them with a wedding theme because one of my twin sons is engage to be marry.
Bride & Groom eggshell cups, Pink Flower Girls eggshell cups for my granddaughters and family wedding party eggshell cups for the rest of the family.

This is how I serve them.

The eggshell cups are very easy to make:
Crack and open the eggs.
Empty the eggshells.
Sterilize the eggshells in boiling water for 3 minutes.
Dry the eggshells
Decorate the eggshells.
Place the eggs cut side up in an egg cartoon.
Pour pudding into the eggshells cups.

The little color spoons are from Daiso (the japanese store where most items are $1.50) that fortunately we have several of them in the Bay Area.

I must confess that even when I like how the eggshells cups come out, I am considering buying a egg topper cracker tool to have a perfect eggshell edge for next year; is the curse of my mild OCD and my preference for uniformity.

Happy Easter!  Smiley

9  Strawberry Cascarones 2016 in Easter by CubanMother on: March 10, 2016 12:15:28 PM
This is my third year making Easter Cascarones for my granddaughters. Because I only make 2 dozen, 1 dozen for each girl, I make them different each year.

This year strawberry design was really easy to make and they come out very pretty. The strawberry leaves are made with green crepe paper to give texture to the leaves and the "seeds" are painted on with gold permanent Sharpie marker.

The Strawberry Cascarones were already delivered to the girls. They are creating an Easter tradition of smashing Cascarones with their godmother. It has been really meaningful for their godmother because that was one of her childhood Easter traditions and I am happy to make the Cascarones for them.
