3121  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: any interest in a spinning CAL? Thinking March 2011 on: March 01, 2011 04:07:15 PM
I'm trying to learn to spin, and I have a garbage bag of fleece from a local sheep.  I would need to clean and prepare it to try to spin it, thou.  And I don't have a wheel, just a drop spindle.

Would that be okay?

I learned to spin on a drop spindle. Drop spindles are awesome!
Totally! If I had a chance to go back and do it all again, I would still learn on a spindle. It makes wheeling it so much easier with that fore knowledge!

Hi I'm Jessie and I'm a fiber addict.
Oh, wait, is that not how we start out?
My goal this month is to get the fleece that I have had in my garage for 9 months combed and ready to spin, though I don't think I will spin any of it. I just want it clean and ready. I might spin some other stuff, I have a bobbin full of 2oz of a lux batt that I need to ply, but I just want that fleece out of my garage (so in May I can get 3 more!).

What is this I hear about "prizes?" Are you serious?!

ETA: We went to the "zoo" today and I got some llama love. Is it bad that the whole time I was thinking "what are you they going to do with your fleece when they sheer you?" while I was loving on her head?

Spindles need more love. Learning to spin is good times. Join in. We'll be seeing you around here more often, then, eh?
3124  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Embroidery Hoopla R4 - Diptych Round!! (SU CLOSED, SO 3/21/11) on: March 01, 2011 08:22:10 AM
Someone in the last round was talking about using freezer paper and a printer to transfer. It worked well for me. basically cut a sheet of freezer paper down to printer paper size, iron it to your fabric that's the same size or smaller plastic side facing fabric, lining up the edge that will go through first (from my experience) and print it, using the fabric as the side that gets the ink. Peal off the paper and hoop it. The ink should wash out, though I don't know, I do it all backwards and from underneath so I didn't have to worry about it.

Just checking in. My large is just about done but other than that I am a little stumped.

I love you guys.

Some really great yarns this week. My favorites so far are Casmir's blue yarn, Zombie Queen's seafoam, and Antsy's romney. I want them all, please! Thank you!

Ha ha. Here are my contributions:
I took the dirty and noils from the fleece I've been combing and Navajo plied these short 44 yards. I could very easily have gotten more but as I was spinning little bits of dust and dirt were floating into my sinuses. I think I'm going to use them for stuffing from now on, as my husband suggested.

And now that Grand Canyon Frost I told you about! I love it! I spun it really thin (that seems to be all I can do for singles anymore) and got about 2 bobbins full. Then I Navajo plied it. I didn't know how it would come out, and was almost regretting it while plying because it seems since I learned how to Navajo it's all I want to do, but while I was winding it onto my Niddy Noddy  I decided I really like it. I got about 75 yards from 1 bobbin and 115 yards from the other.

I should also mention that today was so nice, I sat outside to ply it. First sunburn of the year!

I just got finished spinning my latest spinning the seasons from Knit on Etsy. It's called Grand Canyon Frost, very interesting roving. I'm thinking about Navajo plying it today so maybe I'll post pics later. I have another to share, too, but I think I wanna finish Grand Canyon Frost first. You should all be shivering with anticipation!

Holy crap! You're picture there makes me want more fiber. "I don't have nearly a bed full, even a baby bed full, I must be missing out..."

heh. the sad thing is that's not even everything...  Roll Eyes  I think the problem is that I'm still buying as if I'm still spinning all the time, but I've hardly been spinning at all recently...  Cheesy

I'm willing to bet I'm not the only addict person on these boards who would be willing to take some of that off your hands. I mean, if you really wanted us in your CAL, you would be offering a batt/roving to every participant (which it looks like you could afford to).

I'm just messing with you. I am a FF regular (now) so I will totally be following along, even if I don't spin for uber-stash busting.

So it turns out a friend of mine knows about a sheep farm near me.... Dorset he say's.  ZOMGOSH!  Not the best wool ever, but I could likely go shear a sheep myself!!! COOOOL.  must call them!!
Oh, yeah, I still have most of a fleece to comb. maybe I can do that for this CAL? I am getting 3 more in May! Overload, maybe, but I think it will be fun, especially since I have learned so much cleaning/combing/spinning this one!
