14  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Re: ugly upcycled jean quilt on: January 31, 2011 08:46:17 PM
I have lots of old jeans waiting for a project.  I think I just found one!  Great job and BTW I like the 'nothing is square' part of it.

There are more photos and a pic of my son on my blog.
16  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / blackwork portrait on: January 31, 2011 08:16:28 AM
This is my first attempt at blackwork.  I used a photo of my son.  I firstly 'posterized' it using Picnik and then pixelated it using a cross-stitch software programme.

I decided to use one continuous pattern and just added layers to give depth to the picture.

It worked quite well, except from the third layer onwards the holbein-outline started to disappear into the pattern

I am happy with how it turned out.

I still want to do one with different patterns for each block.  Maybe with my other son's portrait...

this is really pretty.  I am looking for something similar to make - I might just make one too...

Good work!

What a fantastic first attempt!  Well done.  Great colours too.
19  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: Doodle Pillow on: August 28, 2010 12:19:09 AM
This is a great idea!  I often see patterns I would like to try out but I never know what to use it for.  This combining of random patterns to create something completely different is very original!  Well done!
20  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / spiral crochet soccerball on: August 23, 2010 11:13:19 PM
This is number two in a series of soccer balls I am working on.  It is made up of spiral hexagons and pentagons.

It was a long process to figure out the position of all the colours to make sure they all match up and form continuing spirals around the ball.

The basic ball is black to form a lining for the crochet

The finished ball

The first one in the series is a patchwork ball made from shweshwe-fabric, a traditional South African fabric, in the colours of the SA flag.

The next one will be embroidered..

More stories and photos about the process on my blog.
