Clothing Challenge 5 - Little Black Dress

Congratulations to rebecnik for her winning entry: Little Black Halter Dress!

The Little Black Dress: "A simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion" (Wikipedia). Considered a staple to any wardrobe we could all use one, but why buy one when we can make one?

Rules and Suggestions:
  • Your entry should not have been posted on Craftster previously (ie not something you made and posted years ago!)
  • If using a pattern or tutorial, please let us know.
  • You can begin crafting at any time but remember to post your thread in this board from July 1st through July 8th. Voting will be open July 9th through July 16th.
  • Use your own interpretation of the theme. If you want to make a black dress for your three year old that's still a little black dress. If you have black dress that you want to reconstruct, go ahead.
Prizes:

McCalls 3880 Evening Elegance Pattern (All Sizes)
and a Black and Pink Cocktail Hat
82  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl (pic heavy) on: May 30, 2013 06:23:28 PM

Meet Barbra Gordon. She's a librarian by day.

Her hair was done using the method that lanikins used for her Leslie poppet. It's rather messy, but gives wonderful results.

And what does she carry around in her bag? Why books of course.

But Barbara isn't just a librarian. She's also Batgirl.

Close up of her mask. I made it based on a simple fleece hat, and just added slits through which I stuck the bat ears. (The entire outfit is made from butter suede and felt, so I left raw edges as it wouldn't unravel.)

A view from behind showing off her cape.

Her gloves. (I spent a lot of time figuring these guys out.)

And her boots.

She was made for batgirl, and is now hanging out with her.
83  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Mini Book Key Chain on: May 28, 2013 01:28:44 PM

I recently tried my hand at book binding and made this mini book key chain. I followed a tutorial from this Russian blog using Google translate.

I then used the tutorial to make two small books for a poppet.

It was easy and fun. I like the result so much I'm going to be making a few more for friends and family.
84  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Birds Nest Necklaces on: May 18, 2013 01:45:28 PM
These are some Birds Nest Necklaces that I made for Mother's Day Gifts. There are tutorials all over the place for making them, and they really weren't hard to make. My favorites were the one with robin egg blue pearls (which I kept for myself) and the one with gold pearls.

All of them:

85  COOKING / Dessert / Lemonade Cake, Cupcakes, and Fudge on: April 18, 2013 06:58:19 PM
For my daughter's 1st birthday we had a lemonade themed party. So of course almost everything had to be lemonade flavored.

The smash cake was pink lemonade (made from a box mix) with marshmallow butter cream. The lemons were made from gum paste.

The cupcakes were lemonade with a fresh raspberry butter cream. Recipe can be found here.

Lemonade fudge. The recipe can be found Shugary Sweets, but it used a limited edition  Duncan Hines frosting creations flavor packet, so you may not be able to replicate it exactly. I could only find one, so I had to improvise on the drizzle decoration.  They were yummy though.

And just for fun, all of the food.
86  CLOTHING / Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters: Completed Projects / Archive of Featured Projects Clothing for Curvaceous Craftsters on: April 13, 2013 04:43:53 PM
We're a fourth of the way through the year and we wanted to take the time to recognize some of the awesome clothing that has been posted here in the last three months.

87  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Baby Ballet Slippers on: March 22, 2013 09:13:51 AM
When my little sister was in high school she took ballet. So when I came across this tutorial I knew I had to make her little girl (due in April) these baby ballet slippers.

88  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / Baby Circle Skirt with Headband on: March 22, 2013 09:02:13 AM
I made this baby circle skirt (size 0-3 months) with matching headband for my sister who is having a little girl in April. It just goes over a onesie. It was super simple to make and turned out super cute. If you want to make one of your own there is a tutorial at the blog Made.

89  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Sleepy Jean Baby Quilt on: March 22, 2013 08:52:35 AM

I made this quilt using the Sleepy Jean Crib Quilt tutorial from the Moda Bake Shop.  It is for my little sister who is having a girl in April. I wanted it to be feminine without being too pink and happened to have some charm squares that I had bought back in 2009 that I thought would be perfect. Luckily, I was able to find some matching fabric from the same line on etsy.

To quilt it I tried free motion flowers. They are far from perfect (I still haven't figured out the perfect speed yet) but I think they still look cute.

90  COOKING / Dessert / Fish Cake on: February 01, 2013 07:52:08 AM

I made this fish cake for my son's 5th birthday. It was super simple. Just a square cake set at an angle and then cut a tail from a round cake. The scales are marshmallows.
