3051  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / My Second Try on: April 03, 2011 09:05:47 AM

This is the result of my second time trying to spin.  I needed grey dreads for a poppet I was making and from what I read hand spun singles work best, so I thought I'd go ahead and give it a shot. The roving is grey merino from indigocranefiber on etsy.

I had a lot harder time with spinning this than I did the first time I tried spinning. I think I really over drafted and so the fiber would keep breaking on me. Plus I kept hooking it wrong and when I'd give the spindle a spin it would unhook and go flying.

So I have a bit of fiber left over (because of my overdrafting problem) and was wondering if there was a way I could make it useable again. Is it possible to card it back together or should I just learn to felt?

BTW it worked out perfectly for the poppets hair.

What a nice skirt. The fabric is great.

And the doll looks great too.

Too bad I'll more than likely be moving during the middle of this. I've always thought these swaps looked super fun.

I haven't made a poppet since about October.  I did a private swap for 5 of them at the same time I did the poppet swap and another private swap for 1.  I was a little burnt out at that point, but now I am back and excited to make a few more.

And you dosuch cute ones. The dino one you made was really cool.

I'm not going to cut any out yet for this swap, because I want to know what my partner wants/ doesn't even know they want it yet, before I do.  I have, however, been working on one for a friend. I just spent the morning painting scars/tatto things all over his body, and spinning up some yarn for his hair. Not sure the yarn for the hair worked how I wanted it to though. Oh well.

Sign me up! I never could figure out how to milk a cow, but since a goat is smaller is should be that much easier right?

Or take a swatch off an old stuffed animal from the thrift store... or roving maybe?

I can't remember the details exactly, but I'm pretty sure somebody needle felted roving on for hair to a poppet. I think they discussed it in the poppet along.

Here is the poppet's thread: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=360026.0

I had decided not to do this swap, but now that I've seen the lists I'm tempted again. Hmm, will have to talk to my husband about this.

Hey, Mel!
Long time no see!
I'm also pondering this one~

Yeah, the last time I did a swap was January of 2010, so I really haven't been around the swap boards much. I just signed up for one though, which is why I really need to think about this one. My husband doesn't like me having more than one at a time. He thinks it stresses me out too much.

But. . . this one just seems like such a great swap.

Make sure that when you post pics in the gallery to also post them in the Ongoing poppet along thread too ^^ It'll be fun to see them grouped together in a thread that'll probably get more traffic than our gallery when it's finished T-T
I'm currently making an Alice Cullen poppet for a swap of mine. I really wanted faux fur for her hair but I only need like, a fat quarter of some dark brown; probably even less since she's actually just a punkin. A quarter of a yard is like $10.00 Cry So I'm experimenting with felt. I saw a Howl and a Jareth poppet made with felt hair and it turned out pretty good ^^

Have you looked in the craft section of stores.  I know they sell little swatches of fake fur that would probably be enough for you to use.
