Note from the Headmistress...

This semester I will be offering three four extra Challenges.  Each Headmistress Challenge will be themed to the season, will last approximately 1 month, and will earn 15 House Points just like Classes.  So what is up first?

Headmistress Challenges - December
December 3 - December 31

This month Headmistress Jennie is giving you a gift, to help you in your holiday crafting.  I am offering TWO challenges to help you create handmade gifts, and you may choose to complete one, both, or none of them.  Each is worth 15 House Points.

Challenge #1. Craft a gift that you will be SENDING away via either Owl Post or Muggle Post.  You may craft anything you choose, but it must be an item that you are shipping off to a friend or family member you will not be seeing over the holidays.  Items crafted for Craftster Swaps may be counted for this challenge.

Challenge #2.  Craft a gift that you will be presenting to the recipient IN PERSON.  You may craft anything you choose, providing you will be giving it to someone.

Remember:  Everyone loves handmade gifts, and that can include homemade baked goods!  Any cooking projects submitted must include a complete recipe (in recipe format) or a link to the complete recipe, as well as a photo.  Without these you will not receive House Points.

Please note you are welcome to do any, all or none of these challenges as they come up throughout the semester.  They are not intended to cause stress, but are instead intended to get your crafty Muses singing.  None of the HPC staff will complete ALL the classes and challenges posted this semester.  So relax, and craft what you love.

I received a lovely ornament from Missing Willow!  She went with the character I most identify with, Hermione.

Here it is nestled into my Christmas tree!

And she sent some little extras...  Pumpkin Spice tea, some acorns and a tiny pumpkin, and a magnet from her ceramics studio!

Thank you Missing Willow!  I love my new ornament!!!

408  Percy Jackson Inspired Charm Bracelet in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Mistress Jennie on: November 30, 2014 05:50:19 AM
New charm bracelet to share!  This was a special request for a young lady who is very into the Percy Jackson books.  I admit that I only got through the first two of them, while working on her bracelet, but her mom and & I put our heads together to come up with suitable charms for her.  The charms include: camp sign (for Camp Half-Blood), caduceus for Ares cabin, backpack, lightning bolt (stolen from Zeus), bow & arrow, book, Empire State Building (home of current Mount Olympus), baseball cap for Annabeth, strawberry (grown at Camp Half-Blood), Percy's sword, Pegasus, sneaker, and a shell.

The beads are Czech glass, in shades of blue and orange for Camp Half-Blood, green for the fields surrounding the camp, and yellow for the sunshine they always enjoy.

Challenge: Headmistress Challenge - November
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Mom's Cranberry Bread
Brief Description: I may be living in TN right now, but at heart I'll always be a New Englander.  And during certain times of the year I miss home more keenly.  Thanksgiving is always one of those times.  I miss fresh cranberry foods in bakeries and most of all in my kitchen.  (Forget pumpkin spice everything.  New Englanders will go for cranberry everything anytime!)  My mom has been making this specific cranberry bread recipe for over 30 years, and we always had it at Thanksgiving.  Usually she was so busy prepping all the other foods for the day that I was in charge of slicing the cranberries in half for her.  So, since I wouldn't be heading home for Thanksgiving this year, I called her up and got her recipe!
Project Picture:

New England Cranberry Bread
2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
cup butter (melted)
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp fresh grated orange peel
cup oj
1 - 3 cups fresh or frozen cranberries, sliced in half
sugar for sprinkling (optional)

*Note: the original recipe calls for 1 1/2 cups of cranberries, but mom had crossed that out and written 3 cups.  Always trust your mom.  Wink

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Lightly butter the bottom of a 9x5x3 loaf pan.

Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda.  Cut in the melted butter until the texture is crumbly.  Lightly beat the egg.  Add the orange peel and orange juice.  Pour the wet ingredients into the dry.  Gently fold in the sliced cranberries.  Pour into the prepared pan.  If desired, sprinkle the top with sugar.  (Mom used plain white, but I used a coarse ginger sugar because ginger sugar is awesome.)

Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the bread comes out clean.

And a picture of the finished bread, all studded with tart berries!

Challenge: Herbology
House: Gryffindor
Project Name & Page Link: Percy Jackson Charm Bracelet

Brief Description: This charm bracelet was a special request for a young lady who is very into the Percy Jackson books at the moment.  There are more details about the project on the main project thread.  It fits the Herbology prompt because I used orange & yellow for the pumpkins and blossoms grown in Hagrids pumpkin patch, green for the vines and leaves, and blue for the sky over Hogwarts.

410  ~*Detention in the Dungeons*~ in Craftalongs by Mistress Jennie on: November 26, 2014 11:50:04 AM
~*Detention in the Dungeons*~

This semester there will be three Detention Challenges, one for each month.  You are welcome to do any, all, or none of these challenges.  (Remember, they are just here to help get your crafty juices flowing!)  All Detention projects are worth 15 House Points and may be turned in anytime during the semester, regardless of what the newest Challenge is, up until the semester ends on February 28th.  (For example, you may turn in December or January challenges in February.)

December Challenge:
Professor Flitwick has caught you & Ron playing Exploding Snap in the back of the class during the final lesson of Term before the Christmas holidays.  As punishment for not listening to his review of Cheering Charms, you will have to serve detention, helping Professor Flitwick decorate the castle for Christmas.  Get your wand out, and practice draping holly over the suits of armor!  For this challenge you must craft a holiday decoration.  You may choose to create a decoration for any WINTER holiday, including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Yule, Solstice, etc.

January Challenge:
The Christmas holidays were going so well!  Then Mrs. Weasley overheard you and Ron discussing what a prat Malfoy is.  Instead of cleaning our your mouths for the rude words you used to describe him, she set you to scrubbing the kitchen floors in #12 Grimmauld Place.  Without magic.  Like a Muggle!  That will take ages! For this Challenge you must complete a Work in Progress.

February Challenge:
Prof. Lockheart has decided to get into the holiday spirit by decorating the castle for Valentine's day.  The Great Hall is filled with pink confetti raining down from the ceiling into your breakfast, and the girls are all acting a bit strange....  Hrm.... And Lockheart has called you to his office to help him decorate "as a treat" for you.  Grr....  For this month's Detention, you must create a card or gift you will give to a Valentine.  For those of you in the I Love HP Swap, your creations for your swap partner can count for this Challenge.
