Class: Apparition
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Link: Equality Tote

Brief Description: This weekend I went to a BBQ for the friend I went to the Women's March with.  We were celebrating her getting tenure this year, and of course I had to make presents.  After finishing Audrey's, I knew I had to make something for her husband too.  He's a professor who travels 1.5 hours each way to teach everyday, and can always use an extra book tote, so that's what he got.  I cut the text out of white flocked heat transfer vinyl.  I liked working with the flocked stuff a bit better than the smooth stuff, as it's slightly thicker and less delicate.  Steve LOVED his new feminist tote.

Challenge: Detention - May
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Link: Nevertheless She Persisted Tee

Brief Description: And of course Audrey's tenure present!  I actually cut the text for this out when my Silhouette arrived a few months ago.  It's been sitting around, waiting for me to pick up a new tee shirt.  Since Audrey's party was Saturday afternoon, I ran out Saturday morning to grab a tee from Target, to finally put this project together.  She seems pretty excited

2  HTV Feminist Tee & Tote in Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Completed Projects by Mistress Jennie on: May 08, 2017 12:44:05 PM
Back in January I had the opportunity to attend the Women's March in DC, with my dear friend Audrey.  I had already made her a pussyhat for the March itself, and since then we've both been gathering and putting aside bits and bobs for each other in commemoration.  I bought some pins from an Etsy artist, bought a few books of images from the March, the profits of which went to Planned Parenthood, and put aside some of my Women's March bookmarks for her.  Meanwhile, I had also gotten a new Silhouette Cameo and planned on making her a shirt.  After Mitch McConnell's iconic words criticizing Senator Elizabeth Warren, I knew it would have to be a "Nevertheless, She Persisted" shirt.  So I printed my first heat transfer vinyl!  Which sat around for weeks, waiting for me to pick up a blank tee shirt.   Roll Eyes

This past weekend, she had a BBQ to celebrate getting tenure this year, and of course I had to bring all the presents.  I grabbed a tee at Target and had my first adventures with ironing on heat transfer vinyl.  It was cut from a shiny pink vinyl.  It definitely took longer to apply than the 45-60 seconds indicated on the package.  More like 2 minutes.  (If you're having trouble getting yours to stick, I recommend doing it longer, THEN letting the project cool for a few minutes, before removing the clear plastic.)

After making Audrey's shirt, I felt like her awesome feminist husband needed a present too, so I took a stroll through my stash, and came up with a blank blue tote bag.  He's also a professor, and travels 1.5 hours each way to work everyday, so I figured he can always use another book tote!  This one was cut from white flocked heat transfer vinyl, and so I went with a retro 70's font.  I have no idea where the tote originally came from.  It's been in my stash for quite a while.

Edit: In case anyone is curious about the book titles, I picked up Why I March: Images from the Women's March from Around the World and Why We March: Signs of Protest and Hope--Voices from the Women's March.

Challenge:  Detention - April
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Dandelion Art Quilt

Brief Description:  I'm going to be honest.  I was really confused as to what to do for this art quilt.  I read my partners questionnaire, and seriously had no clue what direction to go it.  I normally start in on the project for a craft swap right away, but this was a few weeks of pondering and head scratching.  When I finally decided to go with dandelions as a theme, I sketched my idea out on a sheet of scrapbook paper, to get a feel for the size I wanted to do, and started digging through my stash.  After quilting the 'spokes' of the flowers, I knotted some white pearled cotton embroidery thread to create the fluff.  When the strands were separated out, it fluffed beautifully!  Sadly, because it was white on a white background, you couldn't see any of it from a few feet away.  So even though I had spent hours doing it, I took out all the white thread, and started over in black.  The results are not exactly what I planned, and the whole project was confusing as hell, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

House Pride: Headmistress Challenge: May - Hufflepuff's Cup
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Hufflepuff Spiced Rum Banana Breads

Brief Description:  I feel like banana bread is the food embodiment of the Hufflepuff spirit.  It takes something leftover but still quite good and useful, and puts it to a whole new purpose.  The scent makes any house seem more cheerful, and if you use medium loaf pans, you can make two loaves, so you can share one with a loyal friend.
Project Picture:

Spiced Banana Breads Recipe
1 C AP flour
1/2 C whole wheat flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/8 tsp cloves
1/8 tsp ginger
1 egg, beaten
4 mashed bananas
1/4 C granulated sugar
1/2 C brown sugar
1/4 C cooking oil
1/2 C chopped pecans
1 tsp rum extract

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Combine the ingredients according to the Muffin Method.  Pour batter into two small-medium loaf pans, or one large loaf pan, and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the center.

@Abbeeroad:  I made my chickpea & potato stew with swiss chard, and I FORGOT to take a photo of it to post for Iron Chef Hogwarts.  I'm so mad at myself!  But I bought a second can of chickpeas at the same time, so I'll just have to come up with another recipe to use them in.  Wink

4  Dandelion Art Quilt in Quilting: Completed Projects by Mistress Jennie on: May 06, 2017 09:51:17 AM
This was made for Thimbles71 in the most recent incarnation of the Mini Art Quilt Swap (Round Cool.  Thimbles mentioned liking black & white color palettes, and listed "flowers, poppies, dandelions, etc" as one of her themes.  The quilt measures 12.5" x 12.5".  The background is a fat quarter I found at my local quilt shop, with grey text & equations written out on it.  The stems are made from ribbon, and the leaves are appliqued from scraps of previous quilts.  I used free motion quilting to stipple the background, and to do the stalks between the seeds and the fluff, before adding seed beads for the seeds, and tied bits of embroidery floss for the fluff.  The phrase, "Some see a weed, others a wish" was made of charms from my stash, mostly letters, with a magic wand standing in for the I in wish.  I forgot to get a shot of the back, but it is a bright green modern plaid that I just couldn't resist, and a rod pocket made of the yellow binding fabric, for a pop of color.

I received a lovely quilt from Thimbles71!

Here it is on its own.  I had lots of rainbow mini quilts Pinned on my board, and this one fits right in with those.  The black tree is appliqued on, and I'm not sure if you can tell from the picture, but there is a row of decorative leaf-shaped stitches around it.

I have it hanging in my studio, beside my desk where the bright colors can inspire me as I work.  Smiley

Thank you Thimbles!  I will treasure my quilt.  Cheesy

Note from the Headmistress...

It's time for a new Headmistress Challenge!  Each Headmistress Challenge lasts 1 month, and earns you 15 House Points.  So what's up next?

Hufflepuff's Cup Challenge
May 1st-31st

Hufflepuffs Cup is a small golden chalice, with two handles, and a badger engraved upon it.  Legend states that it has several magical properties, though no one knows exactly what they are.  What we do know is that its creator, Helga Hufflepuff herself was skilled with food charms, and was a proponent of hard work.  After being stolen from her descendant Hepzibah Smith, Lord Voldemort turned the cup into a Horcrux and hid it in the vault of the Lestranges in Gringotts Bank.  The goblin bankers placed a charm upon the cup, so that anyone trying to steal it would be buried in false copies of the cup.  For this challenge you have three options.  You may create a food of any variety (being sure to share the full recipe), you may create a project that requires a great deal of hard work (taking more than 3 hours to complete), or you may create multiples (3 or more) of the same item, such as a set of handmade invitations, a batch of cupcakes, etc.

Please note you are welcome to do any, all or none of these challenges as they come up throughout the semester.  They are not intended to cause stress, but are instead intended to get your crafty Muses singing.  None of the HPC staff will complete ALL the classes and challenges posted this semester.  So relax, and craft what you eat.

9  Constellation Leo Art Quilt in CHALLENGE 118 ENTRIES by Mistress Jennie on: April 11, 2017 01:31:00 PM

I made this for pinkleo, wayyyyy back in 2010, for round 3 of the Mini Art Quilt Swap.  I would have forgotten all about it, if I hadn't just signed up for the newest round, and saw the question about who we had partnered in previous rounds.  Pinks, aka my Craftster BFF, wanted to try her hand at an art quilt, but was worried about disappointing a more experienced quilter.  Since I knew it was impossible for her to disappoint me, I begged her to be my partner.  Initially I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I looked through all my stacks of quilt books for inspiration. I came across a bargello quilt (a design named for this type of needlework), which is something I've always wanted to try but never had the nerve to do on a full sized quilt.  When I dug through my stash, I found colors that worked together, and happened to remind me of the night sky.  That's where my inspiration really came from...

Pinkleo takes her name from her favorite color, pink, and her astrological sign, Leo.  So I created the night sky, showcasing the constellation of Leo, made from pink Swarovski crystals surrounded by black star shaped bead frames made from shell.  You can see the constellation in the picture above.  The grey border is supposed to look like the opening in the top of a round domed observatory that would house a telescope.

The quilting was done free motion, with a random stippling pattern, in several steps, keeping the thread matching the color of the sky behind it.  Then I filled in some more of the sky with additional crystals, iridescent freshwater pearls, and AB glass beads.

I always meant to post this project here, and I'm thrilled this challenge rolled around again and I found a project that fit the bill.  Good luck everyone!

Class: Astronomy
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Vinyl Cutting - Recycling Bin

Brief Description: I've been meaning to post this for a few weeks now, but I kept forgetting to snap a pic.  Who takes a picture of their recycle bin, anyways?   Cheesy  This was my first project on my new Silhouette.  The TRIANGULAR recycle symbol is cut out of black adhesive vinyl, and will hopefully help our guests distinguish between the two different cans in our kitchen.
