Thanks for the clarification - that's what I thought but wanted to be sure. I like Vanna's too (but laugh every time I say it!  Cheesy), its not as coarse as Red Heart. So fewer crocheting injuries.....

... It looks like it's simply soft to me, with a g hook probably. But we're using red heart for this swap, and red heart is used with an I hook. What i did to get the right size every time was I first made a traditional granny square the exact 8" i needed, then i picked patterns that had at least 2 rows of border and cut the pattern short when the square was the same size as the granny square i made initially.
I suppose you could also use a g or h hook instead of an I but it makes working on it more harsh on your hands and the square super thick.

This is my first round, so I just want to make sure I understand - are we all using Red Heart brand, or is this something DV and partner worked out? I haven't bought yarn yet, and may get some on the way home from work tomorrow. Thanks!

Don't worry, I haven't even done one yet.  I have a number of packages I have to get out first and since we have until February 21st, there is plenty of time, though now it looks I'll be the last sender. Roll Eyes

You may not be the last sender, I'm still considering joining.... I really want to, but I need to clear some things off my plate first....

I'm not really having many lightbulb moments yet. Perhaps with lights will be flashing when I start next weekend!
