1  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Animal-themed stitched decorations for a nursery on: March 11, 2013 01:51:44 PM

Now that I've handed these over to my expectant friends, I can post them up on the internet!

They're expecting a girl and her nursery is decorated in pale yellows, greens and blues, with an animal theme. Both her parents love animals so I think she's probably going to grow up to be a zoologist or something! I offered to make a couple of things to go in the nursery and got a bit carried away Smiley

I basically stalked my friend's Pinterest for ideas! She'd pinned this (discontinued?) fox fabric on Spoonflower:

So I made some bunting:

and a felt fox stuffie (I love him so much I might have to make one for myself!):

I made three cushion covers:

An elephant hoop (the mother-to-be loves elephants):

And two mini (4"?) hoops featuring their cats (with little black seed beads for eyes) Smiley

My friends were very pleased with my creations (and I am very pleased to have a rest - for the time being!) Smiley

2  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Quality Street costume on: December 29, 2012 02:40:07 PM
I don't know if Quality Street chocolates are sold anywhere else other than the UK, but if not, they're a quintessentially Christmassy selection of foil and cellophane wrapped chocolates in an octagonal purple tin. For my office Christmas party this year, the theme was 'Christmas' so instead of going as an elf or a reindeer or something similar, I decided to mix it up and go as Quality Streets! But, I didn't want to go as one particular chocolate, or the octagonal tin, so I decided to go as all of the chocolates!

Instead of using actual chocolates on my costume (thereby running the risk of melting and even theft of the chocolates by my greedy colleagues) I got my dad to carve foam into the same shapes as the chocolates, wrapped them in ordinary household foil, and then wrapped them in cellophane wrappers from actual Quality Streets (I've been hoarding them for years, mostly because they're brightly coloured and shiny Wink )

I made a headdress:

And a necklace with a Quality Street logo for the avoidance of all doubt as to what I was supposed to be:

And managed to find a dress in exactly the right shade of purple on eBay and stitched some of the fake chocolates to it:

More indepth info and pictures on my blog if you're interested Smiley

Hope you like it!

3  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / The first thing I've ever knitted! on: September 12, 2012 12:23:42 PM
I'm so proud of myself for finally teaching myself how to knit, I've been making excuses for far too long, so this year I set 'learn to knit' as one of my New Year's Resolutions. I thought it'd be nice to share my very first knitted creation with you all Smiley

The UK residents among you may have seen the little bobble hats gracing the top of a certain brand of smoothie bottle at a festive time of year, and my task this year was to knit at least one of them to send off to said smoothie company to help them raise money for charity. Et voila! The picture kind of gives away who it's for I'm afraid Wink

I love how neatly the rows turned out. I'm a little bit addicted to knitting now, though I'm still quite slow and prone to dropping and gaining stitches at random. Practise will make perfect I hope! If any UKers want to make some bobble hats too, you've got about a fortnight until the closing date - links etc in my blog (linked in my signature).

4  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Anyone know what these findings are? on: April 21, 2012 03:03:49 PM
I acquired them years ago in a big bead mix that I bought. Now I'd like to get some more so I can use them for necklaces etc, but I have no idea what they might be called, in order to search for them. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

They're quite small, maybe less than half a cm diameter on the circular bit.

Thanks! Smiley

5  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Internet & social-media themed cushions: Twitter, Facebook, Fail Whale, Nyan Cat on: March 25, 2012 01:18:53 PM
My friend asked me to make these cushions for him. They're all internet and social-media themed. I started with the Twitter bird one as it seemed like it was going to be the most straightforward. The cushion construction is very simple because a) I don't have a zipper foot for my sewing machine and b) I already knew a couple of these would be stress-inducingly long-winded without the added hassle of a zip.

The first and simplest - the Twitter logo:

The Facebook 'F' (this was a bit more difficult and I managed to sew the back pieces on backwards initially!):

The epic Fail Whale cushion (this took me the best part of 8 hours and a steep learning curve with some fusible webbing):

Google 'G' (I had the colours the right way round all the way through on this one, then stuck the G on the wrong way round. And that fusible webbing doesn't budge!):

Special surprise Nyan Cat cushion (my friend loves the Nyan Cat and thought the little bag I made a while back was great Cheesy so even though he only asked me for four cushions, I've snuck this one in too. Well, it was either going to be this or a Totoro one...I cheated a bit on this one and glued the felt down, I don't have enough time to hand stitch things this weekend!):

I hope you like them Smiley

6  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / A friendly germ/bacteria for my germ-obsessed friend - but what shall I call it? on: December 17, 2011 10:33:21 AM
I've made this friendly germ for my secret santa recipient this year - she's obsessed with cleanliness and killing germs, so I thought I'd show her that germs can be nice Smiley

Do you think it looks enough like a germ/bacteria? It's pretty much just made up and not scientific at all, but I kind of based the idea around a felt plant cell I made a while back (here's my blog post on it if you're interested).

He/she/it needs a name - so far my dad's suggested 'Gerry' and my bro's suggested 'Colin', but neither of them are really doing it for me. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can call him/her/it please?  Huh

Thanks! Smiley

7  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Nyan Cat bag! on: July 12, 2011 01:03:43 PM
For those who might not know who/what NyanCat is, check out this video Cheesy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2-TGUlwu4
I'll warn you, it's not to everyone's tastes  Shocked but it makes me smile every time I see it!

I made this bag for a recent button swap (hence the buttons) and although I just made it as a random large bag for my swap partner to use for whatever, she informs me that it's the perfect size for her netbook, which is appropriate seeing as nyancat is an internet meme and the raison d'etre of a netbook is to access the internet. Anyway, on to the pictures!

I managed to put a zip in!

Lining too!

If I hadn't spent hours sewing on buttons, the bag itself would only have taken maybe half an hour to put together. It's a pretty simple pattern Smiley

What do you think?

8  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Get Product and Website Opinions / Please let me know what you think of my logo ideas on: July 25, 2010 08:35:44 AM
Hello all,

I'm looking to rebrand my Etsy shop (amongst other things) in preparation for introducing a new range of products. My current 'brand identity' was a five-minute thing and not intended to be long-term. Now I'm looking for something a little more professional and versatile. I've been asking my younger sister for her opinions on my logo designs but she thinks everything I do is amazing Grin so it would be great to get impartial and honest feedback from my peers please Smiley

I intend to be selling a diverse range of products so have tried to stay away from anything too specific. One thing is, with my 'company' name and the current logo ideas, do you expect me to be selling buttons? I read it as being just an unusual name but then I've been calling myself Becky Button for years so I'm probably a little desensitised to it...  Huh

I started out with this idea, which I thought was ok but lacking a bit of spark (it's based on my avatar):

So then I tried to jazz it up a bit:

The idea with the second one is that those buttons can be whatever colour(s) I want them to be - Xmas colours in December for example, or shades of green for eco-friendly products.

Please help me to work out what to do! Any feedback gratefully received (but please be gentle)  Kiss

9  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / More acrylic goodness/weirdness :) PIC HEAVY on: April 18, 2010 01:29:08 PM
Thought you might like to see today's creations, again with rubbish photos because I was so desperate to post them up here for some C&C! Roll Eyes

The fairy's for my sister to wear to her fairy themed 25th birthday party - unfortunately I had a little incident when checking the fit of the chain and snapped the poor fairy's arm off! It's being glued back together as we speak but I might have to redesign her to prevent a repeat...

I'm particularly proud of her feet as I 'drew' them myself and although they took aaages to get right I like to think it was worth it in the end:

The phone is for my friend who really really wants an old fashioned telephone but a) can't afford one and b) still lives at home, so I thought I'd make her a little brooch in her favourite colours. There will be a brooch back on the handset (?) bit so the main body of the 'phone' dangles freely. Haven't decided yet if I want to add a wire phone cord - what are your thoughts?

This last one's a bit weird - I teach chicken keeping courses and am always looking out for weird chicken-y things to wear whilst doing them. There's the added bonus that I might be able to sell chicken-related products to both my course attendees and other chicken owners. This one might be a bit too far out for most sensible people - it was inspired by cameo necklaces and as you can see it's got a very noble-looking chicken in profile in the style of a cameo necklace. Unfortunately my straight-on shot was even worse than the rest of my pics so hopefully you get the gist from this dramatically angled pic. Bit too weird?

Thanks for looking!

10  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Help needed! Table decs for my mother's wedding... on: April 18, 2010 12:09:43 PM
Hello all,

Hoping you can help me come up with some ideas for table decorations for my mother's wedding. I'll give a little bit of background on it ...

She's getting remarried in June. She's asked me to sort out the table decs as my 'present' to her. Her dress is white with bead-and-sequin teal-y turquoise-y flowers on it. The men are wearing suits with cream waistcoats and teal ties. They're having burnt-orange rose buttonholes.

The main centrepieces for the tables are small white birdcages. My mother wanted to put pillar candles in but as they won't fit, three tealights look lovely clustered in the bottom, although as it'll be June ie.warm and light 'til late, candles might be a bit unnecessary.

I've managed to get a couple of lists off my mother of things she and her fiance like:

orange gerberas, skiing, running, mountain biking, wine & champagne, the sunshine, reading books, gardening, long hot baths, marshmallows

skiing, mountain biking, stella beer, cars, motorbikes, running, food generally Smiley fishing, tigers, leopards elephants, fizzy cola bottles, t-shirts with funny slogans

I'm pretty stuck on what to do, and whilst I'd love to put feathers and buttons and beads and birds and butterflies everywhere, it's more 'me' than 'them' and of course the day is about 'them'!

Any ideas will be much appreciated Smiley
