Oh I meant to include some process pics in the owl I just turned in.

Since progress in an owl was a quidditch prompt I'll go ahead and use this opportunity to turn that in:

Subject: quidditch Haversacking
House: Slytherin
Project: at least 30 minutes progress on my owl

Here are two process pics showing a couple of hours of work on my spiky sound machine painting.

And then here are some process pics from one of the other paintings I turned in for my owl:

Subject: potions
House: Slytherin
Project: Spiky Sound Machine Series

My proposal was to expand on my Spiky Sound Machine series of paintings by working a little larger and including lots of different colors, textures, and patterns to increase the depth and detail of my work. I feel I accomplished those objectives with the three paintings I am turning in below. They are still pretty small one of them 8x8 and the other two 12x12 but that is an increase from the previous ones. In the first 12x12 one that I finished I experimented with lots of patterns and textures. I used spray paint to create a flecked or spattery texture and pattern that is underlying through the whole piece and I also used some high flow acrylic paint to look like drips dripping through the painting. On the second 12x12 painting I simplified a bit and tried to focus more on depth and visual impact. I still experimented with lots of textures by using the high flow acrylic to make a pattern that resisted the watercolor and had a nice effect. I also included some wood grain like lines to create texture. On this second one I feel I really improved in my ability to create space in my painting.

Here's the 8x8:

Here's the first 12x12 I completed:

Here's the second 12x12:

The 8x8 took about 8 hours in three sittings, the 12x12's each took at least 36 hours in 8-10 sittings.

NEWT Subject: Alchemy
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Elements of Nature Art Series
Description: Alright, Waaaaay back in the Winter of 12/13 I proposed an OWL and it was a gargantuan proposal in terms of the amount of work proposed. I ended up suspending it with the intention of picking it up as a NEWT later. However, the volume of work is still very large for a single NEWT, so my proposal is the following resurrected from Winter of 12/13 with the caveat that I will complete a sufficient amount of work that is more than fair for NEWT credit but may not be as much as is listed below. I will also claim time already served and work already completed when I turn it in.

OWL Subject & Option(if available): Alchemy
House: Slytherin
Project Name: 4 week intensive study of drawing resulting in a series of finished works based on the elements of Fire, Earth, Air and Water.
Brief Description: I would like to use this OWL to break through my art rut and push my drawing skills to a new level. I have broken this project down into 4 weeks of work. Week one preliminary sketching: I mean a lot of sketches I would like to see myself produce 4 or 5 sketches a day minimum, So a total of at least 35. Week 2 refining the material: On the second week I will sift through all of the sketches and research material I have collected over the first week and choose one per day to develop into a finished drawing. So 7 total developed drawings. Week 3, small works: On the third week I want to take 3 or 4 of the developed drawings and use them to create small finished art works like little water colors or small acrylic paintings. Week 4, working big: During the last week I want to use all the material I have come up with so far to create one large work of art, this piece should take me all week to complete.  At the end of my owl I want to have a viable series of art with 7 drawings, 4 small works, and a large work. The whole purpose behind this owl is to build up my drawing muscles, refine my painting skills, and to train myself to work in series and collections in order to become an exhibiting artist. I know this is an extensive proposal but I don't have another job, I am an artist full time, or I am supposed to be, but I don't always work full time.

OWL Subject & Option(if available): Potions
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Spiky Sound Machine Series

Earlier in the semester I submitted three smaller paintings from this series for Study of Ancient Runes. While Working with them I realized that it was perfect for potions advanced study because in order to continue developing larger pieces for the series I would have to brew up lots of various patterns, textures, and colors. That is my proposal to complete a few larger works in this series while really focusing on combining those aforementioned ingredients to create some eye catching art that furthers my series. (5-7 new pieces depending on detail and size.)

I am SO excited to be able to post this. For the FIRST time in my career in this craftalong I am able to turn in an OWL. This year has been a remarkable year for me in the terms of productivity and general life functioning. A little over a year ago I began treatment for narcolepsy and slowly everything in my life began to change. I am able to complete more complicated projects and make progress in my art and music that I've never been able to make before. Anyway, my ability to focus on larger projects that may take more than one sitting to complete has drastically improved. It's no secret that ErinAquaheart and I have gone through some trying times over the years that we have been participating, and this community has really helped keep us going through many, many challenges in life.

OWL Subject & Option (if available): Muggle Studies
House: Slytherin
Project Name: Muggle Fairy tale Art Toy Series

Over all of the time that I have had to work on this I have gone through several incarnations of my concept. I originally saw myself working with a wider variety of materials, including an original cast resin edition, and some vinyl figures, but our circumstances being what they are when it came down to execution I had to stick with the materials I had on hand, therefore all of my pieces are folk dolls. I did however focus on trying to explore different techniques involving textiles. With The Cowardly lion I saw what it was like to just draw on fabric like I would on paper and I attempted to give him a sort of sketchy look like he was a doodle come to life. With the lion I Also explored painting with dyes instead of thicker paint, but I also used some dimensional paint and some glow in the dark paint. I then experimented with stitching to create a pattern on him. I'm pretty happy with how he tuned out. He is around 12x18 inches. With Glinda, I wanted to definitely come up with my own concept for her; maintaining her identity as a character without ripping off other designs. With her I tried out thicker paint on the fabric and went for a more illustrative quality to the drawing than I did with the lion. I added texture by crocheting layers of lace for the bottom of her skirt.

Here's my preliminary sketch for Glinda: you can see how she changed as I went along.

I wanted to make sure I covered two different time periods so for my next group of them I chose Snow White and Rose Red. I wanted the look of these to be more stylized and minimal in contrast to the sort of blingy Wizard of Oz ones. To achieve this I went with print carving. I had so much fun carving the print blocks that it inspired me to use more print making techniques in a wide range of art. The ink came out a little lighter than I anticipated on the fabric but I kept it because I liked how ghost like they looked, but if I were making a play set for a child or to be handled by many people I would find a different ink.

Above I showed the process of drawing the design, carving the blocks, and the test prints, Which I was so happy with. I really can't wait to use my carved blocks with other things. And here are my little folk dolls:
