1  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Pottery, Ceramics, etc: Completed Projects / Re: crane pot on: April 28, 2017 08:07:45 PM
This was my original post, just moved it out of the way for the prettier pictures!

I'm working on a piece I'm excited about, so I'm gonna force you to look at in progress pix!

it's a special request from a friend.  She asked for birds, rainbows, and plants, so I sent her this as an idea:

She liked the picture, but suggested doves for "the other side" and asked for more flowers.

So I underglazed the whole pot in sky blue, and bisqued it.
I sketched the designs in pencil, then went over the final design in sharpie marker.  I got that idea when someone in my class used sharpie to label her glaze samples and the sharpie all burned off.  It will show through the layers of underglaze as I add colors.  Pencil wipes off with a damp towel, and gets blurred when painting.

I need to add more plants around the base, to ground the design, then I'm ready to start painting!

If you have a suggestion, speak up quick!

whew, neither Walmart nor Target had anything Cinco related, and I didn't make it to Costco (which is 3 hours away).

I found some ideas online; I'm going to print a banner that says "FIESTA!" (one letter on each page, bright colored paper), and make a tissue paper chili pepper or two, and turn out some multi-color tissue flowers.

She'll be able to store the banner easily, not so much the tissue stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions!
4  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: Need Cinco de Mayo potluck food. Low Carb and more? on: April 26, 2017 03:31:48 PM
That sounds good, except the bacon--pork is red meat, no matter what the ads say.
(good ways to remember: red meat is a mammal.  If you're unsure which animals are mammals, just don't eat anything with 4 legs.  There are mammals with less than 4 legs; bats and whales, for instance, and an alligator has 4 legs but is not a mammal.  But you might not encounter any of those unless you live in the Bayous.  Am I taking this too far?  Grin )  But I could use chicken or even fish or shrimp.  Or gator.

Not sure if a salad would be satisfying enough, but a combination of spinach, chopped boiled eggs, bacon (is that off your list? If so, roasted chicken?), steamed asparagus, goat cheese and whatever else sounds good with a mustard/lemon vinaigrette might work if nothing on the paleo Mexican search looks good to you.

the tablecloth backdrop is a neat idea!

I'll ask about her xmas decor, I don't do a lot of traditional xmas.

She'll have pinatas filled with interesting stuff.  One year she included mini liquor bottles.

Felt is free if I shop my garage, that's a great idea!
6  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Need Cinco de Mayo potluck food. Low Carb and more? on: April 26, 2017 11:41:51 AM
I want to bring a low-carb dish to a CdM potluck.  To make it extra difficult, I don't eat red meat, cilantro, or sweet peppers.  Not a fan of super-spicy foods, either.  Stuffed chilis?  I don't think so.

That means there won't be much at the party for me, so I want to bring something satisfying.  Y'know, so I won't go wild and stuff my face with tortillas, corn, rice, bunelos, flan, churros...Ok, now I'm just fantasizing.  Cheesy

Any suggestions?
7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Party Planning / Cinco de Mayo party decor on: April 26, 2017 11:03:40 AM
I just volunteered to help a friend decorate for her annual Cinco de Mayo party.
Surprisingly, she doesn't have a lot of decorations, so I'd like to make a few that she can store and reuse.

I'd like to do something with a lot of impact, cheap materials, and FAST--we're decorating the day after tomorrow.

It'll be in her garage (which is amazingly tidy all year).  She'll have long tables that could use some kind of colorful runners or something.  We can hang something from the ceiling and/or along the walls.
I have several colors of tissue paper, so I'm thinking flowers, chili peppers, and/or fringed banners from that.

Not a lot of craft resources here, Walmart is my best bet for supplies.

any more quick and easy FIESTA ideas?

At first glance, I thought this was a full-size piece.  That's impressive!

I can only read one book title ("When Muggles Attack") what are the others?
