31  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Penguin hat on: July 12, 2008 08:57:42 PM
I have been dying to make a hat like this for a long time, and just recently I got on a big sewing kick, so I decided to try.  I don't have terribly much experience sewing, I've done a couple of Halloween costumes and size-altered a couple of my clothes, so this was an adventure, especially since I had to stray from the pattern a bit.

I used the see&sew 4003 hat C pattern for the basic shape of the hat.

I don't know all of the tricks on how to make things fit better, so I was wondering if anybody could help for future reference, how do you make a hat less lumpy?  This hat bunches along the top seam in the front and back fairly noticeably, which is why I'm holding it flat in the picture.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with how this guy turned out.  Next time I make a hat like this I'm going to use white thread for the stomach of the penguin, and I'm not going to be using my crappy sewing machine.  But if anybody has any suggestions on how to improve this, I'd appreciate advice. Smiley
