1  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Employer Identification Number Question on: July 04, 2009 06:39:39 PM
As a sole owner I know I don't need one, but I don't like the idea of having to give everyone I do business with my social security number.

Or am I being paranoid?
2  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Home based business problem on: July 02, 2009 05:03:11 PM

I searched through my counties business tax receipt records and found quite a few business that had the same business address and home address. I even found one located in my community.

I guess that means they do let people run businesses out of their homes.  Grin
3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Employer Identification Number Question on: July 02, 2009 04:58:56 PM
I have finally gotten off the pot and went down to the tax collectors office to pick up my business tax receipt application. Upon reviewing it I see that I need to get an EIN first. I started the application but when I got to the question about describing my business I got confused.

I make various craft items to sell (handbags, home decor, and apparel). Does that make me a retailer or a manufacturer?

I can only choose one option.

Fellow craftsers, how did you know what to put on your application?
4  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Grocery Store Tote Question on: June 17, 2009 12:09:29 PM
I am looking to make some tote bags for shopping (grocery store, craft store, etc.).

What would be the best fabric to use?

Home Decor Cotton?
Cotton Duck Cloth?

5  Florida / Florida: Central / Re: Selling crafts in Tampa... Tax?! Business?! on: June 13, 2009 03:22:23 PM
I live in Pasco County and have been wondering the same thing.

What I can tell you is that some cities in the Hilsbourough/Pasco area allow for home based businesses.

Search your cities web site for "Home Business Tax Receipt", If your city has it you are in luck.
6  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Screen Printing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Buying Tee's to Print on.. on: June 13, 2009 02:58:44 PM
I can tell you that Forever21 T-shirts have the company name on the inside as an iron on type label. I don't know if there is a way to remove it.

If you search "Wholesale Junior Clothing" you can find the companies that supply Forever21 with their T-shirts.
7  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Re: Home based business problem on: June 13, 2009 02:43:26 PM
I want to get a business licenses (or business tax receipt as it is called in Florida) because it seams that you need one to buy things whole sale (fabric, t-shirt blanks, etc.). If I opened an Etsy shop I would need to collect sales tax, wouldn't the state get suspicious if I am paying them sales tax from a business that they have no record of.

If there are ways around this I am all ears (or eyes).
8  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Home based business problem on: June 10, 2009 03:15:41 PM
What do you do when the area that you live in does not allow ANY home based businesses?

I want to make crafts (handbags, t-shirts, home decor, etc...) out of my home to sell on-line and at craft fairs. There will be no extra traffic to my home, no noise, no tell tale signs that there is a business going on in my home.

Short of moving, I don't know what do do.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I live in Pasco County, Fl but not in one of the cities that have business licenses for home businesses.

Thanks Mophelia, I never thought of that.
10  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Tile Coasters on: May 29, 2009 03:47:49 PM
I have recently become obsessed with making coasters out of ceramic tile and scrapbook paper.

I seal them with Minwax Polycrylic and they work great with cold drinks, but when I put a hot mug on them they started to melt.

My question is what can I seal them with that is heat resistant?
