81  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / mrah (for Valentine's Day) on: February 15, 2011 12:46:49 PM
This was a little V-Day gift for my boy - something we say/type to each other a lot (like every third sentence...).

The border design I modified slightly from my Jeanette Crews Designs pattern book - the modification was actually an accident, but it turned out to be perfect! Here it is still in the hoop:

Small thing, but I'm really happy with it!
82  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Let's make a frigging hat already! on: January 22, 2011 01:54:57 PM
If you are one of those new knitters who is shying away from hats because they seem complicated, or they need special needles/skills then you are just like I was a few days ago, until I said "Ah what the heck, I am making a frigging hat." If you have a pair of straight needles and some yarn, know how to knit the basic stitch, and can knit two stitches together to decrease, then you can make a hat.

I made this with Lion Brand Homespun that I fell in love with at the store years ago, and never did anything with because I didn't think I could do it justice. This yarn is very forgiving; my stitches aren't very even and sometimes the tension went wonky, but you can't really tell because it's so curly. The pattern is basically this hat from I Wish I Was Knitting, but on straight size 10.5 needles (because that's what I had). I cast on 60 stitches like the instructions say, and knitted away for a while until I thought it was about the right length, then started decreasing in the pattern described. Toward the end I skipped the rows that don't decrease so it would be flatter on the top. I cut the yarn, leaving a sizable tail, pulled it through the last six stitches, and whip stitched down the sides to pull it together into a hat shape. Then I tugged at the hat a bit to make it a more pleasing shape (again this yarn was great for that, I could mold it pretty well). Voila! I made a hat!

If I can do it, you can do it.
83  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / These shirts travel in space (and time) on: January 13, 2011 08:50:59 PM
I made both of these for swaps, and I wish I could get motivated enough to make them for me!

I loved playing with the colors for the TARDIS, which went to Ink_A_Dink.

The firefly/fireflies (ahaha... ha...) went to padfoot.

Thanks for checking 'em out!

85  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Fixed a scratchy sweater by... adding another sweater! on: January 07, 2011 01:08:07 PM
I really liked this little green sweater, but it was so scratchy around my neck that I hardly ever wore it. But I did get it for free, so I didn't feel bad about cutting it up! Cheesy

I used pieces of a large cotton sweater that my grandfather gave me for the fabric (my family knows me...)

I started by dissecting the green sweater into front, back, and arms. I used the same arm shape, except longer.

The neck is like a large turtle-neck - I usually keep it rolled down, and it's very comfy.

I used the cuffs from the white sweater, turning them into thumbies.

I love my new sweater! Thanks for checking it out. Smiley

Details of swap:

Find a matchbox that holds between 30-40 wooden matches and fill it as full as you possibly can with tiny supplies. You'll be amazed by how much you can fit in it! You can put anything you want in it, as long as it is craft related.  Supplies such as beads, paper, ephemera, postage stamps, brads, buttons, fibers, embellishments, stamped images, stamps, ribbons, stickers, foam shapes, fake flowers.  Handmade goodies such as, earrings, magnets, a necklace, charms, pins.  If it fits and can be used in a craft, or is a craft it's fair game. You can have 1 or 2 partners -- you will decorate  a matchbox for each partner, and you will receive a matchbox from each partner. One suggestion would be to stalk your partner and decorate the matchbox to their likes and dislikes but if you have an idea in your head already, decorate away. Just as long as you decorate and cram as much into the box as you can all will be good.  This swap is meant to be a quick, easy, and cheap swap so no extras, if it doesnt fit in the box do not send it.  You can also make your own "matchbox" as long as it is the appropriate size. Here's one template you could use: http://blog.swap-bot.com/rachels-matchbox-template/

About shipping:
Delivery confirmation is required in the US for this swap, and swappers sending non-US packages must keep mailing receipts and be willing to send a scan or picture of that receipt if there is a problem. If you are unsure if your package is big enough to qualify for delivery confirmation, please upgrade to a bigger envelope or box.

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

87  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Felt ferret (link to pattern) on: January 01, 2011 11:55:36 AM
I made this little guy for my boy for Christmas, since he has a ferret but can't take it to school with him.

All hand-stitched felt, and seed beads for eyes and nose.

I'm pretty proud of him! Especially since I tried this pattern last year, and failed miserably.

Here's the pattern I used: http://www.silverseams.com/opensource/felt-ferret-pattern.html

And the original! Cheesy

88  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / I washed my fabric and the color's still bleeding? on: December 14, 2010 08:28:09 PM
Actually, it's been washed twice now! It's a very dark blue, and I don't know the history of the fabric at all - I got it at goodwill awhile back. But I've been sewing it into something, and it's bleeding right onto my hands! My fingers are stained, as well as the tips of my nails. Do any of you know of something I can do to make it colorfast? Maybe wash it again a special way?
Thanks for any ideas!
89  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / A swap to restore sanity and/or fear on: December 02, 2010 04:28:07 PM

I dearly wish I had gone to the rally, and looking through all the pictures of people's signs online makes me say "Oh I need that on a shirt" every few minutes. This swap would encompass any political views, and the Daily Show & Colbert Report fandoms as well. I'm thinking threat level wall hangings, clever t-shirts, Jon Stewart dolls, homemade "donkey food" granola, a "tea party" tea set... any interest?
90  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Getting back in the inchie mood on: November 12, 2010 09:59:38 AM
Partly to prepare myself for the upcoming round of Christmas inchies, I sent these little lovelies off to selkie in a personal swap.

Very happy to be making these again! Cheesy
