1  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: Your favorite crochet tip... on: April 20, 2017 02:26:50 PM
Code:
I just learned to crochet in August, but have found a few things that help me.  I have a little binder clip with one of those page marker things marked with an arrow.  I'm able to move it down the pattern as I need to.  Have also used a dry erase pen on my sheet protectors!  I keep it in my bag as well.

I also have a sheet stand for my patterns.

Plus I use stitch markers when I'm working on circles or anything with changes in stitches.  I put one color at the start of the round.  Another color to use in each spot that I have to double up stitches.  It helps when I have interruptions such as the phone (like now when I'm trying to type this post!
2  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Grapevine within metal frame cross on: April 08, 2017 04:35:48 PM
Walking through a cemetery today,we saw several crosses with a metal form filled with grapevine in the shape of a cross.  Went straight to Old Time Pottery, which was the closest floral merchant in the area.  Nothing close.  Hobby Lobby fit after.  Zilch.

Has anyone seen these in a brick and mortar store?  Knew we should take a photo, but of course didn't.
3  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: Crocheting Magazines on: February 16, 2017 10:33:48 PM
I know this is an old post, but some info in case anyone checks back in...  Some libraries have Zinio magazine subscriptions.  The library in Nashville includes Crochet and Knitting mags downloadable for free!  The library is paying off the subscription and you can print/save whatever pages you want.  Also search the books feature on iPad and the like.  There are some free and cheap electronic options there as well.

I have a store-bought version and both of my cats love these too!  Obviously it's not a tugging thing, but my cats may think they're dogs anyway!
5  UNITED STATES / Tennessee / The Big Stitch - Nashville, TN on: January 30, 2017 09:37:18 PM
Didn't find anything about this organization listed in this section of the board and thought I'd share. They have an event coming up next on Feb 4, 2017 from 9a-3p. A lot of donated yarn, patterns, crochet hooks, knitting needles and various other supplies will be available for purchase. There are door prize giveaways too! Free classes are held throughout the day, but do require registration. (They are also conducting 4 session classes at various libraries around town.)

Check the website for further details and future events. http://knitandcrochet.org   Direct to Big Stitch page:  http://knitandcrochettn.org/the-big-stitch-2/
6  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: need your yarn winder opinions! on: October 26, 2016 07:45:04 PM
Would like to kind of renew this topic.  We purchased a Boye electric yarn winder from JoAnn's (while they had a 60% off coupon available making it much less painful).  Got it home and upon opening, it appeared to have been opened before.  It didn't look bad, so we figured it wasn't a big deal.  Plugged it in, plug light lit, but machine wouldn't even try.  Took it back and exchanged it, same issue again.  Took it back and got a refund.  Read reviews online after and read of people complaining about the loudness of it.  Funny, because neither of those ever made a sound!

Does anyone have any good reviews of an electric yarn winder that doesn't cost the arm that I am trying to give some rest to?  (At JoAnn's, the Boye was $90, bringing it down to $30 with the coupon, just for reference.)

Aw nuts.  Sad

I looked at that site too, but I liked the organization of the Crochet Guru site a little more for starting out.  Plus, I had to print out all of the lessons to be able to carry a notebook with me in case we got to something I didn't know was going to be covered in class!

I took classes in August to learn to crochet. Unfortunately, with my being left-handed, I had to go home and hit YouTube after every class. The one that helped the most was crochetguru.com. She has lessons in order of how it's probably easiest to learn.

Is there a pattern I missed for the skull hat?

I am in a similar boat of never having picked up a needle before.  I did want to learn enough to use with my knitting loom though.  We ended up having a four session class on Crochet 101.  My problem was that I am left-handed and all of the instructors are right-handed.  Each one has told me that I need to "go home and search YouTube.". One of them feels so badly about it that she even offers to sit and watch with me.

The videos by this lady really helped me though.  She has both right and left handed.  I was able to download the videos and put them on a DVD for playing through the TV instead of lugging out a laptop or watching on an iPad with ads.  She has each lesson numbered and on her website, crochetguru.com, she also has the instructions written out with photos.  https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCEi5vDi04oNB_I2Nws7mA8Q.
